Do you know why that is? Closer home? Under 17 camps? More opportunity for game time? And has Ben gone back to Auckland too?

Ahhh thought that was a yellow card in the 67th minute.

yeah I think that's what someone has entered but it looks like he has broken a world record for cards in a season.

WeeNix v HBU 2 pm Sunday David Farrington Park.

Should be a good contest between these 2 teams

Depends if the WeeNix are actually allowed any Nix or if they're all being rested after their corporate exertions on Tuesday.

Permalink Permalink

so why can't Rufer get a run with this lot? He didn't play last week or mid week? Something is a little more than 'out of contention'

Grumpy old bastard alert

Definitely odd that he didn't play Sunday if he was never going to play Tuesday. But maybe he was in the mix or for some other reason only Rogerson/McGarry (the two closest to WeeNix) were allowed. Wait and see if he's there this weekend.

I'm starting to wonder about the place of the Weenix in the league.

Generally for the good of the Phoenix (and therefore NZ Soccer in some ways) we need a avenue for the reserves / fringe players to get some meaningful competition.

However the disrespect that the Phoenix seem to be paying the league , and it's negative impact on it's integrity makes me wonder.

Perhaps the role of the Weenix is part of the reason for the head to head results being ahead of goal difference in determining rankings ?

Interesting to note that the Aussie A League youth sides can be relegated from the State Leagues (as were Victory last year)

I have long held this same view. It would be somewhat better if they had a proper reserve team squad , but the age of some of the players for me means they are just not up to playing in the top league, and then they constantly change the team with no consistency. In all the other teams very good NZ under 20 players hardly get a chance due to depth, yet the Phoenix play inexperienced younger players. Does not make sense to me still.

Without having watched yesterday's match, this is all a bit knee-jerk.

In what is the most even national league season in living memory, they've been more than competitive. Five wins, three teams below them, and a respectable goal difference (given yesterday's hiding). Wins over both Auckland City & Team Wellington.

Having met Andy Hedge a couple of times, I've been really impressed by his approach and demeanour. Prior to yesterday, I've never personally picked up on any disrespect towards the national league, quite the opposite in fact.

While having them playing in a proper reserve A League is inarguably the best solution, what we have is undoubtedly the next best.

I enjoy watching them play and have loved watching some of the youngsters flourish (Singh being the perfect example).

I wonder if yesterday's performance is more a reflection of the poor morale which appears to be prevalent in the wider club at the moment. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if the WeeNix bounce back with a win over Wanderers this weekend.

The fact that Hedge was so pissed off afterwards shows that they treat it with respect.

Definitely that he does. Whatever Rufer's done to get on the outer with the seniors, he should be in this team. Also, a joke that they rested players for the Beijing game over playing Auckland City last Sunday. And I bet the Vince Lia testimonial hit and giggle takes priority over their SSP game that weekend...

Ruffer promoted to squad for Rd 10 and 11 then is not list  as in the squad for rd 12. and no player unavailable.

Was he injured in rd 11 ?    Has he refused to player SSP - as a previous young Tyler Boyd had previously

Can't imagine so - Tyler at least had the argument that he was bossing SSP/ASBP and not getting a shot he probably deserved

What's the limit on first team 'Nix players dropping down to the SSP? Is it just a matter of giving someone else in the first team some game time?

2 over 20s plus a keeper IIRC

Only played Parkhouse and Italiano yesterday.

Pros per week this season.

4, 2, 4, 0, 7, 5, 5, 6, 4, 5, 75, 4, 6, 2, 4

7 was Italiano (keeper), Fenton, Lowry (both over 20), Ridenton, Rufer, Rogerson, McGarry (all 20 and under) - and Fox for Lowry the second time.

Watson and Parkhouse (and Litfin) have also made appearances.

Losing Bell (to US) and M Mata (to AKL) and then some under-17s (Whyte, Cacace), plus not having Fox/Lowry around has all contributed to back half decline.

Edit: Point being, I guess, that Ridenton, Rufer, Rogerson, McGarry can all play whenever.

It was a hilarious goal, but Max Mata wasn't playing. Ben was, it could have been him that scored it (I was down the other end and not really paying attention).

Yeah it was Ben Mata who scored the own goal. Watch from 10mins in.
