No.

Which is a surprise considering he'd be pretty high up on a list of best midfielders in the Central League.

It's the coin.  Marist payed no one anything this year as far as I know.  Cowan ain't sticking around for that, and lets be honest, when your offered cash to do what you would be doing for free/ pay to do, whose gonna say no (except the most loyal of club men)  Nobby played mostly for Marist reserves ths year.

Cory Chettleburgh only getting expense money at Wests (ditto Finlay Milne before he went to America).  So it's not just coin.

your right I was probably at little unfair, i'm sure the coaching programme at Wests would have helped, and also the chance to play in a very competitive team and try and win a title.  With Cowan its the coin! :P

Edit:  The Nobby comment was assuming it was the same player - don't know his full name, little 5'2" Japanese winger that has very quick feet?

Like I said its the money OR the coaching. You are going to get good coaching, play with good players at wests and pretty much if you don't play for them your probably not considered good enough for nz teams.
Unless you are Barron (for some unkown reason) and Bannetyne (But after Sundays game you would probably have Younghearts keeper for the All Whites)

I guess I should have used quote tags but I was responding to aitkenmike not you Oldys#1Fan.

Prob the fact Barron's an established international training regularly with Feenix gives him the nod over someone like Mike Smith.

Don't think there were many internationals playing for Wests.  Think its the coaching and the setup that attracts players there (and they have enough cash to sling around to cover your petrol etc).

Its not a very good environment if you are trying to break into the team though. Especially as Wests seem to have an open door policy to a player who decides to return for a game or two during the season shifting players in and out without hesitation. I.e. when the u.s scholarshippers come back for summer break, the bench players get relegated to the reserves in an instance. (correct me if I am wrong)
Apart from that Wests sounds good for everything you have said.

Back onto Youngheart though...

Why didn't Scott Robson start?

To Palmy and back three times a week for training (x2) and game would be more than $200/week.

And both of them spent time on the bench not getting on so depending on agreement potentially no appearance money.

Pocket money only mate no matter how you look at it.

only trained once a week.. fin actually said tht he was thinking of coming back to marist midway through but decided to stay at west 4 the money...........

Interesting allegation.

I think it's a common thing for players who are at weak clubs and who see teammates go to strong clubs to blame the money.

Even travelling to Porirua twice a week you're going to eat up your 200 bucks pretty quickly (if indeed that's what he was getting).  It's simply not a get rich scheme.

I suspect, and I haven't asked him, that Fin went to and stayed at Wests for the same reasons he left Marist.  Because Marist was a poor team with average players and he's a good player who wanted to play with other good players.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

lol im nt blaming the money for anything... i was jst saying tht they were infact getting more than jst expenses as you said. fins a good mate of mine and your right good on him for wanting to play for a good and well established CL club. 200 bucks for doing something you love is nothing to point your nose up at... the fact tht he and corey could share petrol cost they were still looking at 150 a week each on most weekends....

yea you have to take into account they were doing this twice a week... roughly 50 bux there back one pays 4 training one pays 4 game?

I know Cowan and Nick Roydhouse got a bit of a top up for playing for wairarapa united. Still, you'd have to take into account the petrol money yea, its not much money really. But more than you get at a manawatu club from what I can gather.

Yes it is hard life on the road, with only petrol expenses being paid because it is time consuming all the same.

But really, local clubs like Red Sox or PNE has to lift their game and give these Ex-Marist players an optional call to integrate them into their plans to make CL. The club training set up is of a reasonable standard. Red Sox was about 2 or 3 first team players short of having a team getting past playoffs against Tawa into CL and probably 5 to 6 squad players short of making a competitive CL season if they get there. Also they would get more game-time on the field than on the bench at West.

Player retention is a difficult one in the region. Western Premiership is only three seasons old and many young players are still inexperienced even at that level. Although, it is cost effective level, it is competitively weak compared to Capital Premier League due to it being a young league with some inexperienced and weak clubs at that level. The playing standard of the local schools outside of PNBHS is seriously lacking and that is where the future of Manawatu is.

Massey 1st is very weak in many ways with the better University players are playing in other clubs besides the Massey team. The Massey coaching set up is very weak and the social aspect is pub-based not club-based. Sadly, years ago their funds were stolen and the club hasn't recovered and were on the decline since.

But the point is that there is a lack of depth and development and the future in player retention in the region is problematic. If the local University and Schools systems are not up to scratched (and I think that it can be much much better), then where would the future of YH Manawatu players come from?? It'll be interesting to see if YH can make any moves to strengthen their squad before the 2nd half of the season kicks off. The comment has been made that the squad has a lot more depth than last season but I don't believe that to be the case. We had Nieres leave and not return and Raf away for the odd game but were able to cover for them. We were only really found out in the 2nd Semi vs Auckland. This season we have struggled up front with Banks out and I don't want to think about what might happen if we lose one or two of our defensive or midfield starters at any time.

Who ate the pie? Manawatu did. Talk about unfit. Unbelievable , against a second rate team who were fit.
No. 2 Nobuyoshi Ishi the only one who played well.
Cory gave the ball away so often you thought he was colour blind.

What concerns me is that I wasn't even gutted by the result. I seem resigned to the fact that we are never going to score at home (one goal in 4 matches!) and we are just really not that good.
Hold on - that's just not right!! Come On You Lads! Playoffs for us again this season!!

very disappointed by that performance this afternoon. Poor defensive effort. Robson played very well though with some great tackles and counter attacking. Cowan with a few trademark big tackles too and benson's volley was tops. Awful first goal for Waikato. Nicholson's let it go straight through his arms

Do you know, who is also in the squad for the next season?

Not sure. I think I did see an article in the paper about quite a few of Wairarapa United players being threatened with deportation which included Soromon. Would be a shame. Him and Hayne would make a great combination.

YoungHeart vs HBU - Pre-season match
Saturday 16th October
2pm
Dannevirke A & P Showgrounds

Saw the YHM squad in the paper. Still some places to fill and I bet there is some serious chasing of players going on as we look to lack experience and depth as the squad stands at present.

It was last week. Thurs or Fri. Borren and Hayward mentioned. Nicholson not returning.
Michael White, Falvey, Cowan and Hayne bring some promise.
No Soromon.

Hmmmm..... Adam and Jason going cap in hand around the streets of Palmy in a search for sponsorship, Soromon considering playing tennis and/or golf through the summer, doubts over whether we have a fit goalkeeper in the squad to play on Sunday - it's going to be an interesting season make no mistake.
