Spoonley did have an absolute shocker. Did pull off one very good save I remember though.

I've finally got my breath back. That was the best performance I have seen from a Manawatu team for a long time. A combination of brilliant execution on defence and attack and gritty determination when down to 9 men. And a bit of luck thrown in here and there too. Auckland were poor (in no small part due to our fantastic defensive effort) but I'm not complaining. Hard to pick a player of the match as they all played well. On reflection I'm sure Gus and Raf will regret their actions. Their unavailability will make the return leg that much more challenging. That said, we have played without Raf previously and the players called in have really stepped up.

I wouldn't move Adam up front as I believe he has really tightened up the defence at leftback which I felt was an area of weakness previously. Possibly Hayne as a lone striker and a packed midfield or maybe Duker as a target man. I expect us to play a counter attacking style as Auckland chase the game.
Hayne for the Phoenix... eeer.... no. He has scored some brilliant goals this season but his all round game needs a bit more work.

Willy you really have to stop having our import players as your avatar. First Vakatalesau doesn't score a goal all season and now Park Sung-Bae has vanished without trace. Couldn't you put Totori or Krishna on there instead?

Well we dared to dream but just couldn't see it through in the end. That was torture to watch today as Auckland dominated us throughout. I thought we would struggle without Gus and Raf and so it proved as we never got a hold in midfield or put any pressure on their defence.

To all of those involved in the YoungHeart Manawatu franchise - I would like to take this opportunity to eat my words (and yes I will have sauce with that!). Before the start of the season I was highly critical of the preparations for the new season. What followed has been a veritable feast of high drama, spectacular goals, amazing saves, Manawatu footballing folklore and no shortage of skill. It has been a delight to be part of it. The lads didn't do themselves justice today - they've been far more entertaining than what we saw on the tv this afternoon.
The move back to our spiritual home at Memorial Park has been a great success as has the pre and post match at the Rose & Crown.
Congratulations to all involved. It is just a shame that you  didn't get the final result that your commitment deserved.

Ross Nicholson has signed for Manawatu (Manawatu Standard).
Is the chant:

"He's fat, he's round
He bounces off the ground
Nicholson, Nicholson"

still appropriate?

Apparently we had the option of Chris Marsh back again but preferred Nicholson. I thought Marsh played pretty well for us last season and I didn't think his distribution was too bad.

I would say that it's VERY appropriate

Normo's coming home

I think you'd be much better off with Nick van Hattum than either Marsh or Nicholson.

There.  I said it.

Other vastly superior alternatives would have been Jake Gleeson, James McPeak or James Bannatyne - all three of whom are in the TW frame, but they cannot ALL play.

Also, if someone doesn't convince George Barbarouses to play for YoungHeart they are a MUG.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Well to be honest our back 5 should be a 'shoe in" for them, well actually the same thing should happen to our midfield as well as our strikers...!!!!!

Would a midfield three of De Gregorio, Barbarouses and Halikias be competitive against a midfield of Peverly, Barron and Cheriton?

I reckon it probably would go okay.

Barbarouses was one of the best in TeeDub midfield before he went overseas so don't know what you're on about.

Was good enough to start for us before not sure why he wouldn't be now.

Yeah, Ross is flying in for each weekend match. Mind you, it'd be hard to balloon out much more!

Upon his return last season he played left midfield.
In 2006/07 he played in a central role just behind the 2 strikers where I believe he was more effective.
Why do you ask?

I remember the days of home grown talent in the midfield. Sandbrook, Robinson, Roydhouse, Richardson. now it's all wellington discards. A bad sad really.

YHM squad in the paper on Thursday. Seemed a bit light on defenders and once again the side lacks height. Let's hope they make up for it with "heart".
Great to see Raf back and Campbell Banks will be an interesting signing. A lot of players in there that I don't know a lot about. Hopefully they can gel quickly and kick on for the sprint that is the NZFC.

Goal-keepers: Ross Nicholson (Auckland), Matt Borren.

Defenders: Colin Falvey (Otago), Adam Cowan, Scott Robson, Marco Paracchini (Switzerland), Graham Craven, Matt Smith.

Midfield: Raf de Gregorio (Wellington Olympic), Nobuyoshi Ishi (Japan), Josh Chettleburgh, Matt Kennedy, Nathan Cooksley, James Thomas (England), Mikey Crisford (Red Sox-Manawatu), Jimmy Haidakis (Wellington Olympic), Cory Chettleburgh, Daniel Benson.

Strikers: Seule Soromon (Vanuatu), Campbell Banks, Desmond Faaiuaso (Samoa), Takayuki Omi (Japan

Yea alot of ex palmie boys players in there. Hopefully Cory chettleburgh will really step up this season. A few overseas players which should be interesting

We need some more youngsters in the team. Maybe pop like a Richard Gray upfront. Hes powerful and scores goals. Just what we need. And he's Manawatu born a breed.

Yeah he went to the states for a while I heard. Was a great player at school, but hasn't really kicked on at all.

Yeah, he looked good for Hawkes Bay last year and his partnership with Campbell Banks will be interesting this year.

Banks looked good.

Seems to me that most of Manawatu's best players don't play their club football there though -

Banks/Soromon/Cowan are at Wairarapa Utd.
Chettleburgh (who bossed the midfield in patches despite being only 17) is at Wests.
Robinson plays for KFC I'd say.
And of course Rafaelle de Gregorio who plays for the folding stuff (currently Olympic).

Why is that?

And where did this Takayuki Omi come from?  Looked handy.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Cooksley, Cowan, Chettleburgh, Borren and Robson are all from Palmy Boys' High School. Fair enough 3 of the 5 don't play footie there cos Palmy Marist are terrible.

The two asian boys are probably from  the IPC - International Pacific College by Massey.

How many of the Team Wellington guys are actually from Wellington? with the amount of Wellington teams in the Central League it is a poor percentage who make the regional team.

Why is that?

Whoa, knee-jerk much.

I wasn't questioning their "Manawatu-ness".

Indeed, from TeeDub: Bale, Winsauer, Noviello, Davies, Peverley, and Draper are all arguably imports (although Draper has lived here for a bit with the Feenix prior to a stint in Australia).

I was just wondering why they travel so far and wide to play their Central League football.

Money and Coaching (independent of each other). Everything which Palmy soccer is lacking that other top central leagues clubs have. Unless you have a coach like Colin Tuaa coaching Palmy Marist again you won't get good players playing for them. There are also no oil wells around the city that can buy players like that of Waiarapa.

Shame really.  Marist weren't terrible this year, and if they could inject Cowan, Chettleburgh, and a couple of others into that lineup they'd be good.

Takayuki Omi played for Onehunga Sports in the northern prenmier league over winter.

He won the northern premier league player of the year with 18 performance points, finishing well ahead of  Steven Holloway (Melville) 12, nathan Coe (Manurewa) 11 , Danny Robinson (Lynn Avon) 11 and Hoani Edwards (Eastern Suburbs) 10.

Omi must be a bit of alright then. Never heard of him before. Must be Bod Sova's contacts from Auckland from the years he coached up there.

Did George Barbarousous make Youngheart or Team Wellington?
