In the continuining quest to develop Phoenix chants beyond "She fell over"...

Here's one for Paul Ifill (not that there 's anything wrong wqith I-I-Ifii-Iffi-I) - this is just another one.

To the tune of Split Enz's 'One Step Ahead' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NduGJ0F5sdI&feature=related, ideally sung just after he skins an opposition defender down the line...

One - step ahead  - of you
Paul Ifill, makes it hard to move

He says "Boy - I want you - to stay."
and he'll come right back, beat you again
If you stop,  you will shake - your head
And he's done a dance, either way you're confused
You don't know what
You're s'posed to do
He will always be
One step ahead
Of youuuuuuuuuu

La da da da da, da da da da, da da da da, da da da da
La da da da da, da da da da, da da da da, da da da da

One step ahead of you
Time is running out
Catching up with you
One step ahead of you
With I-fill with us
Can we really lose?

One step ahead
Only one step ahead
'Cos he's one step ahead of you...

You're an ex Brit aren't you? The kind that tend to look down on football here.

Having said that, keep them coming (minus trumpets),bust them out during games, sing different things loudly and more than once so people can have a chance to get their head around what you're chanting and join in too..Tegal2010-09-26 21:01:35

No. I'm born and bred as a kiwi. I sung for the Kingz in the Bloc and in Australia, and now I have moved to Wellington and I sing for the 'Nix. I don't look down on football here at all.

It's not my quest. I'm just one of many who'd like to see us get better.

If you don't want us to grow and evolve and get better, that's cool. You're entitled to your opinion.

If you think my suggestions are crap, that's fine too. Again you're entitled to your opinion.

Shouldn't discourage new material.

Best way to get it out there is matchday, people tend to rubbish ideas on the chant forum..sad,but true.

Don't worry, I am a veteran of forums, and I know that more than half the comments are always critical. My skin is thick. I won't shy away.

Since the Fever seems to have a ban on song sheets, and only 150 odd people (at best) ever read the forum threads I don't see how any chant that's either:
1. longer than a few lines; or
2. not based on some over used regurgitated English leagues chant
is ever going to get picked up.

I appreciate the view that sees any group of fans that need song-sheets as "not quite real football fans". However, given that the act of singing at a game comes reasonably hard to most NZ sports fans I think they have their place. They helped get people singing a wider variety of chants in the first 2 seasons of the Kingz - when singing at a game was alien to most kiwi fans.

Kiwi fans don't sing because they are afraid that no one will join in if they start on their own. People don't join in because they don't know the words...

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Not a chance on chant sheets. Ever.

Why?

Ever go and stand in Aisles 24 - 27?

The most common comment you hear people saying is "What? What are they singing? How does that one go?"

If they knew what the chants were they'd join in.

I'm not saying hand chant sheets out in the fever zone. That's (arguably) like selling coal to Newcastle... but getting a couple of extra thousand to join in would be a good thing. Wouldn't it?

I'd agree that outside of the zone it's difficult to pick up what is actually being sung - even at back of zone it can be tricky. It would be good if some of them could get involved more (there are a reasonably amount who would like to).

Not sure about chant sheets... seem a bit cheesy for my liking. There's nothing to stop someone making them if they wanted to.... yellow fever isn't going to though.

Problem is not so much knowing what the chant is, but the chant is only picked up about half way through or at the end of the first round. The chant then goes for one more round and then dies away.

More chanting at outside area of backbencher before game so people become familiar with the chants might be good. Colvinator2010-10-05 16:57:57
