selective too. He was awful at Wai bop. Coaching individuals doesn't vindicate his time in charge of first team

i like Declan though, he's doing something different and if we had more coaches who thought about the game the way he does we'd be in a much better spot right now

The Western Suburbs team had a pretty good showing at the U19's in Napier coming runner's up. I didn't hear anyone rank them as contenders. They're a young side and most of them are coached by Declan at Ole. He can't be doing that much wrong?

Article with Declan in the Kapi -Mana News...

Hmmm.. almost choked on my cornflakes & wonder if he kept a straight face when saying "No bookings or red cards. You play fair and you respect the opposition. the officials .....". Guess the ten game ban has reformed him :-)....But yeah, Declan,  Ole , Wests are doing well so fair play to them.

Declan comes across really well in that video I reckon. I am also a massive fan of his position that we need to do it a New Zealand way. Look at what others have done, but do our own thing. This is my principle objection to filling full time coaching and development roles in this country with recent (mostly English) migrants.

But I digress. The Edge iteration of Ole is definitely my all time favourite. They're doing really great stuff.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Will always be a polarising figure, and have his methods questioned but underneath it all is passionate about about producing more quality players out of NZ. He'll always question the NZF status quo. That ain't a bad thing.

Has anyone heard anything about Declan potentially moving to the Phoenix academy , taking some players with him? I know the Phoenix 15's coach has left. Just something interesting I heard today , was told it is a rumour only. May just be someone's idle speculation. Vaguely curious , that's all.

My thoughts I'll admit. But the "rumour" came  from the Phoenix Academy; what I found interesting is the position he's supposed to be taking. It does sound like bollocks.

Ha ha, Declan was whinging on Twitter last night about media attention going to those Waiheke United ultras rather than to COAL FACE dinkum Kiwi clubs.

he made a similar point around Premiership foreign players on twitter recently. Other countries are not going to bother developing NZ talent, we need to figure out how to. Unless we want the all whites to be the occasional atheltic freak, and dual nationals.

Leaving aside the fact that a lot of that isn't scientifically or logically sound, it reads much more in favour of veganism than against it.

Not the place to go deeper into it but it is a life style choose. (I'm not against it)

Very interesting. Direct reference to this thread by Declan. Impressed by Sippola when I've heard him speak.

Oops I didn't mean to endose your reference but I pressed the wrong button. What I did want to say was I couldn't hear the discussion with Declan and Sippola due to the background music which was too loud. So who were the 7 players in the same squad as Declan ?

Permalink Permalink

The recording is not perfect, but there was no background music. Did you have another app playing while you listened?

No other app playing to the best of my knowledge at the time. I will try listening again. If that isn't successful just tell me who the 7 players were.

I think the ‘Hamilton Project’ reference is essentially the Waibop 2011-12 squad. The point made was that an unusually large number of players from one team out of a small population base have gone on to higher levels: Thomas, Boyd, Lissette, J. Edge, H. Edge; plus a number currently at US colleges. Additionally, Jason Hicks was in that squad.

Tyler Lisette - where is he

Harry Edge is bench sitting at ACFC and starts occasionally. Hardly moved forward

Hicks was with Waikato under Gerdsen (from memory). Can’t claim him.

Jessie Edge was average at ACFC and is playing 2nd tier Dutch leagues

He had Thomas. Boyd has over achieved but he has him.

I’d give Declan fair cop that proportionately, 2/7 (?) is higher than most coaches going but let’s not go sucking his dick and telling him everything he touches turns to gold.

To add, I did not listen to the podcast

Lisette is in Sweden (2nd tier) - may not be the highest standard but like Jessie Edge on that list he is professional

So out of your list of 6 (not 7), 4 have made it to be a professional footballer, pretty good strike rate there I'd say

But hey Declan can be a bit of  a dick so lets do that Kiwi tall poppy thing and shoot him down and put him back in his box

the 7 was listed by the previous post - note my (?) and I did give him credit but his record is not as outrageously good that every footballer has turned good. How many teams has he coached since that 2011 side and how many players have gone on? His record is better than others but again, not everything turns to gold so it’s not the tall poppy syndrome.

Declan deserves a shot with a national age group side. The problem is he does not want to work within the frame work of NZF. It’s the same for Wynton and why he is not involved. They want to do it their way and their way only.

Not to mention others coming through who’ve worked under him at Ole. 19 year old mccowatt started for ACFC at club world cup recently & Wests won central league with average age of 18.

If you listen to the podcast, it sounds like the ‘Hamilton project’ experience has been one part of the evolving approach to things at ole.

I would love other NZ clubs/academies to be producing pro footballers at the same rate. What fan of football in nz wouldn’t?

I thick chucking Declan in the same boat as Wynton is entirely unfair on Declan.

Giving Declan a tournament team in its current setup would be pointless. Danny hay has also realised national teams have nothing to do with player development. Let’s distinguish between the two or shift the paradigm. Heraf has called for a national live in academy, ie ole, weenix etc

Looking back over this thread there are a number of people who should grow some balls, admit they are wrong and listen to the podcast. You might actually learn something.

What he does works. The West's team last year played fantastic football and the kids coming through are real players, none of this 'hoof it up the front' rubbish.

At no stage in the podcast did I hear the name 'Hicks' so it's 5/5 in this list all earning a crust playing football.
