I don't know if this has come up on the Gunners supporters thread, but this is apparently going to be the new kit for 08/09. It's not been officially launched yet; this is a leaked pic.
I can't believe they'd ditch years of tradition for this. I mean, it's an OK kit in itself, but what about the white sleeves? They (AFC) are identifiable worldwide by their classic kit? Bizarre.

Looks similar to our kit from about 7 or 8 years ago.

Three for me, and two for them.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of those sleeves either and I'm an old traditionalist who prefers it when we wear red socks.

If tradition was the deciding factor Arsenal would be wearing recurrent shirts all over.

Shirt looks good to me.

tradition? don't teams change their shirts every year? lol

That was the last season at Highbury and was a reference to their 'original' blackcurrant strip... before any white sleeves or white socks had come along lol

i would've been happy if they had kept last seasons kit.

2 years is the cycle, unless they have special editions like the Highbury one.

If you look here other than the extra red in the sleeves, its not a huge departure from most of our styles.

I like the enw strip, part of me really would have liked it if they'd stuck with the "blackberry" clolouring though, that was sharp.

Try this for a complete showing of every Arsenal kit! They are reknown around the world as red tops with white sleeves! Just as green & white hoops are synominous with Glasgow Celtic.

Yeah LG, as usual you and I concur. The new kit does not have white sleeves, it has a white stripe on the sleeve. I seem to remember the fans rebelling against a kit a few years back in which the sleeves were predominantly red, and the club changed back to white sleeves before it officailly went on sale. They are sh*tting on their tradition in order to sell more clothing. Not on.

Re-read the thread. The 'traditional' tradition was a redcurrent shirt. I know that everyone thinks that what they know as tradition is *the* tradition, but this is not the case.

Even traditions change. Especially for a 2 season period. And yet no Arsenal fan seems to have  a problem with it?

Between 1969 & 1978 was the best Arsenal Jersey - unchanged for 9 years and bought by thousands. Everyone made a profit regardless.

It looks ok to me, but I will be able to give you the lowdown when im back home in London next week. But lets be honest we wouldnt care what they would be wearing, so if were moving forward maybe we should lose the white sleeves, and play in a solid colour. If you remember guys the original kit was borrowed from Notts Forest. I agree with the maroon kit, it was one of the best kits in a long time, well that and th famous banana/prison away kit, or the famous green and blue and stripey socks.

You re-read the thread. You don't seem to be aware of the distinction between "original" and "traditional". As far as I'm aware Arsenal wore a currant strip for a couple of seasons only, very, very early on as Woolwich Arsenal.
Whereas the "traditional" kit, with white sleeves, has been worn since Herbert Chapman brought it in in the mid 1930s, with the exception of a brief spell in the mid 60s when they went all red, reverting to white sleeves after the uproar from the fans.

That was a really cool site LG. I had an argument with a fellow gooner that we had solid red shirts in the sixties and he didn't believe me. This proved me right.

Why are Arsenal taking so much flack for changing thier kit. Every club in the premier league (championship even) changes kits Bi-annualy. if every new kit was the same it would get very boring.

You are missing the point uberGunner, something Arsenal fans on here seem to be masters at. I wasn't giving them flack for changing their kit, they change once every two years, which is more than acceptable given that my team, Leyton Orient, change every season, as do many more clubs.
I was giving them sh*t for disregarding about 80 years of club tradition in order to come up with something new for the fans to buy. Sure, change the kit, just keep the white sleeves. It's part of their identity.
But then, these big clubs have long since got used to selling their souls for hard cash. What's your stadium called? The Charles Buchan stadium? No. The Herbert Chapman Stadium? No. Alex James? No. Cliff Bastin? No. George Armstrong? No. Liam Brady? No.
You get my drift...

i understand what you are saying, but their is still a decent amount of white in the sleeve.

and as far as the stadium name goes. It cost over 300mil pounds to build if Emirates airlines wants to pay 100 mil of that for shirt sponsorship and naming rights, therefore reducing our dept burden and keeping ticket prices to a reasonable (but highish considering the place is brand new) level and allowing us money to spend on players, then so be it. The place will still be called Ashburton Grove as far as I'm concerned. when it comes to Money Arsenal has one of the most realistic finance models around, namely being self supporting.

fair enough, and you are right about us Gunners on here. we have seemed a bit defensive latley. But having just spent $150 ordering that shirt from the UK, i am obliged to argue hat its the greatest arsenal shirt ever (my fav is still my blackcurrent Bergkamp highbury tribute shirt)

i know, the prices are getting worse. the new Orient shirt (which i've got to have) is 40 quid, with post that'll be around $150. AND, i've just ordered two new shirts which I've got to pay for before that, Real Sociedad and Schalke 04. And then after all that, I'll get the new Alloa shirt. My madness knows no bounds.

Arsenal need the white sleeves and the red top. It is what Aresenal is all about. Just as there have been murmurings at QPR over this seasons jersey. Rumour was the hoops might go the Reading way but the fans have already told the club anything but the full hoops around the jersey will not be tolerated. Tradition is a good thing, progress can work hand in hand with tradition.

Man U with red tops, City with light blue, neither of them would change their shirt too much from what it is. And rightly so. Sorry Arsenal fans but it really does look like a Forest jersey now.

Looking through Kitbag.com Chelski's home top looks the worst, although the Tottenham players look like male nurses>>>>>>>>>

A bit defensive lately?  I have to say, I can't read the Aresenal thread any more.  Too much obsession with the minutiae of football.  Even a new tea lady at the training ground would get you guys talking for days about the relative merits of tea versus coffee and how she performed in her previous role, impact on the team, she's better than Man U's tea lady etc.

Great that you're so passionate in your support but don't be afraid to look beyond the walls of Ashburton Grove or whatever you think it's called these days.  This is a Phoenix fan site after all.

Fair call, although the point I was trying to make was that the Arsenal thread runs to 105 pages - probably three times more than any other team thread.  Like it or not, you guys really are mass debating about all things Arsenal.

But chill out.  I'm just yanking your chain for a bit of pre-season fun.

I like that site LG. Here's an alternative one:

Interesting to note that it took Arsenal 50-odd years to adopt their "traditional" look though. There's been a similar discussion on the Brighton email list about our stripes and many of the older fans remember an all-white kit.

It goes to show that often-times our view of what is tradition depends on just how old we are!
