Bet you anything you like you'll be paying someone different to watch live EPL in 12 months time.

Any particular reasoning behind that?
It doesn't seem to be that high a target to me. Even if they don't break even in the first couple of years (start ups never do), their subscriber base would only grow as confidence in the product and technology grows, and as people upgrade their gear.
With the EPL they've also set themselves up as a brand, in what is the future of the way we watch sport (as has already happened overseas) and they can perhaps even build on the EPL and add MLS etc to their options, and perhaps even other sports in time.
While I'm not saying theyll definitely succeed, I see no reason to be as certain as you are that this will crash and burn. Unless you know something I don't?

Looks much better - but unsure why we dont actually get game footage to see. This one is just pre-match...

They seem to be doing little to actually engage the fan and potential subscriber.

They do note the site goes 'live' from Aug 1, so maybe then we'll see some more action in all departments from them.

The talk over at geekzone is because the fast paced parts are quite blurry but I can't confirm.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I'm too lazy to scrawl through lots of previous comments but once you get your pass can you watch on lots of different computers/devices? Similar to ISky. Thinking if got 4 or 5 people together then paying $50 each for the premium pass better than $240ish. One pass, many people using same login details

Chris,

You wont be able to do it concurrently as you can only login once with each subscription.

Sommet and SKY I would imagine are fighting for the rights to Manchester United and the one who doesn't get them gets Liverpool.

Sun online football show to form part of new digital offeringJust read this on Guardian website.

2 Quid a week would be sweet if accessible in this part of the world.

Does anyone have more info on this and/or ways around regional blocks for TV shows and sports items. Cheers

Once they have their Apple TV app going - and people are happily using it, that's when I'll get on. Easiest way to hook in, no reliance on cables/laptops/tablets/whatever and it'll be almost like watching on "normal" telly.

fair enough, being an arsenal fan you dont need to worry about the champs league which is shown via sky.

and arsenal games are free anyway, so what exactly will you be paying for? the chance to watch stoke v west ham??? riveting!!!

With Sky broadcasting the Arsenal, Man City and Spurs channels (and one other they're negotiating for) fans will get a lot of games Coliseum don't have the rights to as well as EPL and in better quality than Coliseum's heavily criticized recently unveiled broadcast standard. Sommet Sports have the Chelsea and Manchester United channels on Freeview. Coliseum will be severely impacted in the rear area:

http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/football/news/article/-/18269952/sky-tv-to-show-delayed-epl-games/

"The rights deal encompasses games shown on Premier League Club channels for the four clubs, including Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup matches."

So with more reading of these links, it doesn't say SKY will be playing these games in HD. Anyone know ?

It seems to me it must be what is played in the teams websites.

If PLP provided 4 - 4.5 mb/s bitstream there would be no question of who to go with. There is still time !

It annoys me that Sky could've had this extra football content for years but they didn't give a sh*t about it until they got some competition.

Which is what I meant when I said "sky can suck it" Mr Sole.

I'll be getting PLP, and retaining Sky, so I'll have so much football available now, you little ripper.

Just need to sort something for freeview now. Least costly option?

What is available on the teams' websites is usually HD quality these days - Arsenal is, for sure -  from "Arsenal Player" website:
What is Arsenal Player?

Arsenal Player is Arsenal’s on demand online video service.
Bringing you all the latest action and interviews from behind the scenes via our video player that allows you to watch HD quality video on a top-class, easy-to- use website.

Still getting rid of SKY Sports for PLP.  Sick and tired of their crap.

I'm used to watching games live at 2am and now I can do that watching my team (Everton) rather than waiting for so random time the next day (if at all).

Even though it pisses me off now that they are jumping through all these hoops to get some sort of rights, the fact they are picking up some games is probably good for the casual watcher who have SKY.

Not that I'm aware of... got a non-smart HD tv with no bells and whistles i.e. no built-in freeview, no USB port etc etc

Would I need to put an aerial up? crikey

It's not a bad backup decision by Sky, but i'd rather stick with streaming, thanks. I never manage to make it much past 9am on a Sunday morning without finding out the results anyway, on demand suits me.

Incidentally, is it just me or is the Tottenham Asia Trophy game much better quality than the City v Sunderland?

I have tried to like arsenal player, but the reality at last attempt, they didn't use akamai, so trying to stream out of the uk was just terrible performance :(

That remains to be seen. Do you imagine ex-pats are just going to stop watching their teams?

If anything, expect sky to tank, not plp. Quite a co-incidence that news corp exited a few months before this deal came along....

If you have a newer TV it might have a Freeview receiver built-in.
If not you can purchase a Freeview HD UHF set-top box from the Warehouse or Dick Smith etc. for under $100
(avoid satellite receivers as Sommet Sports only broadcasts on UHF)
I purchased this box from the manufacturer  Dish TV in Hamilton (free postage) and am very happy with it - this model has the advantage you can plug an external hard drive or flash drive into the USB port and program the box to record programs e.g a match at 2am. Way cheaper option for recording games than a box with built-in hard drive:  http://www.dishtv.co.nz/Freeview%7CHD-aerialBox/98-aerialBox-mini-T1000-Freeview%7CHD-single-tuner-USB-PVR/flypage_web2_lite.tpl.htm
You will then need a UHF aerial (indoor one okay if you live near a transmitter tower only) - buy one for $40 on Trade Me
Decide whether you can attach the aerial to your building yourself or pay a tradesman.

I cant imagine sky will tank because they are not broadcasting live prem league games. they still have champs league, world cup, a-league amongst other things, and rugby is still the dominant sport in this country.

plus for people like myself who don't have to watch games live, replays starting from 1pm on a sunday are fine.

but if you must pay so you can have the ability to watch sunderland v stoke on demand, you can fill your boots!!! that little blurry thing is the ball.

Yeah, I don't think Sky will tank. I don't see Coliseum Sports or Sommet any time soon getting into producing local content rather distributing already made content. So Sky with their infrastructure are the most likely to be able to provide local sports.

EPL is the first in a very slippery slope for Sky. I'm certainly not saying it will happen this year.
