Aye, it'd be great to see an all championship final! I really hope WBA produce the goods against Portsmouth. As far as Cardiff v Barnsley goes, I've got no favourites there so good-on whoever wins that fixture.

I'd like a Barnsley Portsmouth final with Barnsley winning it,

but ithink Redknapp would be too canny to lose in the final (but there are already a few managers with egg on their faces thanks to the efforts of Simon Davey and his lads)

If there is any justice in the world - taking out L'pool and Chelski on the way to the semis has already made them legends in FA Cup history, but if they make it to the final or even win it, that will finally shut up all those whingers who say the "romance" of the FA Cup is dead

Cardiff to defeat WBA who then go on to play in the UEFA cup next season.
So are Cardiff a welsh team playing in an English league or a Welsh team who think they are English without the same advantages or are they just confused?

FA CUP LAST FOUR FACTS
1908: Last time three non-top flight teams reached semis
1912: Barnsley's FA Cup win
1927: Cardiff's FA Cup win
1939: Portsmouth's FA Cup win
1968: West Brom's last FA Cup win - their fifth triumph
2004: Last time a team from outside Premier League reached final (Millwall)
Some great facts here.

Would i be right in saying West Ham were the last side out of the top flight to win the FA Cup? I didn't look this up btw.

Yes. I also heard if Portsmouth don't make the final it will be the first time two non top flight teams will contest the final.

As things stand, Cardiff can't qualify for Europe via the FA Cup as they come under the Welsh FA's umbrella. They regularly qualify for the qualifying rounds by winning the Welsh Cup, and to also have the opportunity via the English FA Cup wouldn't be fair.
And, yes, if WBA beat Pompey then it will be technically the first ever final between two non top-flight sides. However, seeing as the FA Cup started in 1871 and the Football League not until 1888, then it could be argued that the first eighteen finals involved sides from outside the top flight.

You're kind of half right, none of the Welsh teams playing in the English FA cup qualify to play in the Welsh one, it's one or the other.  That's why Myther Tydfill and other Welsh minnows qualify for the UEFA cup so regularly.  Even if Cardiff win the FA cup the FA have stated that they will not put them forward for the competition.....see below.

THE Football Association has confirmed that Cardiff City will not be granted special dispensation to compete in Europe if they win the FA Cup.
Dave Jones' side were yesterday drawn against Barnsley in the semi-finals of the competition, which they have reached for the first time since 1927 the year in which they won it.

However, under current FA regulations, they will not be nominated to represent England in the Uefa Cup if they lift the trophy.

Cardiff come under the jurisdiction of the FA of Wales, even though they choose to play in English FA competitions.

This leaves them in limbo as neither association can nominate them for Europe the FA because Cardiff are Welsh and the FAW because they do not play in their competitions.

Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale had hoped the FA would put them forward, but the governing body moved yesterday to reiterate its regulations.

An FA spokesperson said: "Our position remains unchanged and should Cardiff win the FA Cup this season, they would not be chosen as the FA's nomination for European competition.

"Cardiff enter into English domestic competitions on this understanding and they are fully aware of the rules and regulations under which they take part. These rules remain the same and there would be no scope for Cardiff, or any of the other Welsh clubs in the English system, to qualify for Europe as England's representative."

That's right, things used to be the way I said, but that changed when the Welsh national league (or whatever it's called) came into being about 10ish years back. Back before it, the Welsh sides played in both cups, and that was pretty unfair as it was always an English League side (normally Cardiff or Swansea, although Wrexham and Newport won a few too) who got automatic qualification into Europe. Also, English league sides near the border (Chester, the two Bristols...double fnarr fnarr), Hereford all played in it too.
Incidently, did anyone hear the ESPN idiot call them Hereford TOWN during the Boro/Cardiff game? Friggin' clown.

It wasn't actually Tommy Smyth with a whine that called them Hereford Town, it was some other knuckle-headed no-name.
Smyth has been covered here before. We all agree he is a gonad, which is probably why the yanks appear to love him.
I wrote an article in one of the last Soccer Talks about him, which was "co-incidently" followed by an article in the Sunday Star Times by Shayne Carter that "co-incidently" raised most of my points and "co-incidently" even used a couple of my Tommy Smyth gags .
It was, of course, only a "co-incidence"...

The Baggies to win with  Roman  Bednar scoring the wining goal in the final!!
Just to piss off the the owner of Heart of Midlothian FC who lent them this fantastic player and who is  only going to get a couple of million quid if he signs for them on a permanent basis because our(The Hearts)  dodgey Lithuanian owner jumped the gun and   signed a deal allowing him to be  virtually  given away should  he choose to become a WBA player when the loan is up(and why wouldn't he ?)
Another own goal by the Jamtarts!!

They all very interesting teams thats for sure.

If Cardiff and Pompey both win their semis, then Pompey is likely to be off to Europe automatically and won't need to worry too much about getting Aston Villas 6th place in the EPL in order to go for the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Since Pompey is 7th at the present. However it is up for review due to UEFA president Michel Platini concerns. [see link below]

Personally I do like Cardiff to win the FA Cup because I like the Welsh to win something. I understand that most people what Barnsley has been a giantkiller and had old NZ football link but Bobby Gould use to managed Cardiff, so I know who he will be hooting for.

FYI, Cardiff is in a bit of trouble with their creditors and getting stadium projects going so really I like them to solve those issues and move to a higher club development bracket. I don't like to see an established club unable to pay some of their debts while trying to get into the next club development stage with better grounds etc.The club's court case with creditors Langston began at the High Court yesterday top settle a way to deal with the 30 million debt. [Getting into the Epl would wipe this quickly with automatic 100 million]

It would be great if they get to the premiership one day as the first non-english side to do so. But you can't really be upset with the championship league, it is the sixth richest division in the world!

Seriously though, there was some interesting debate on the Guardian football podcast this week to the effect that everyone has been moaning about big 4 dominence in the cup, and now they're gone everyone is moaning that the cup has lost it's magic and this is evidence of its falling relevance.  Personally, I think it would be great for a club like Barnsley to win it.  They've got to really fancy it now!
