i consider myself a fan of LFC despite having no connections to Perennial strugglers Perennial strugglers Liverpool. every goal torres scores has me jumping on the couch in celebration and every loss ruins my week. im as passionate as any throughbreed scouser when it comes to supporting the club. Stop focusing on what the board rooms are trying to do, thats the nature of proffesional sport, at the end of the day its all about what happens on the pitch

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Have you ever been to Perennial strugglers Liverpool? It's not nice. They eat their own babies there.

Slightly different situation with the Nix being the only A-League team in the country (I don't seriously expect you to get all your football kicks from Waikato FC - that seems a little harsh).

But, yeah, as soon as there is an A-League franchise up your way then you are goneburgers from Planet Nix I'm afraid.

the thing is before the nix i didnt have a profesional team to support that i did have links to,except i suppose the knights and kingz, but i refuse to support any auckland team.
so what was i supposed to do, not support a team because i have no geographical links...thats just not football

Hampster, whatever you chose, don't chose West Ham because it is too close to your surname and is too LOL material for the others. Not good for banter and makes you look like a dork. That is one club you should be put off from, I think.

Firm up your choice over time. Best bet.

Fer me sins I chose Arsenal at primary school in the 80s cos everyone hated the way they played. Plus I was able to say 'Arse' around Mum and Dad without getting in bother.

I support Manly cos everyone hates them, they have strong Kiwi connections and my Dad was a supporter.

I support Hearts in Scotland despite finding out they have a Royalist section that can be a pain (I'm fer the the NZ Republic!). Until last month I was a Edinburgh resident of 4 years. Also a Manc Scum supporting pal of mine followed H*bs in Edinburgh so I had to pick their rival!!

I follow teams in just about every sport/league on earth and there is always a thought out line of reasoning (can be very ambiguous!) on why I picked that side.

And you stick with it. Unlike a pal of mine who supported the Scouse in the 80s and switched to ManUre in the mid 90s. Git.

How old is Leggy? Is he 12 or 72?

That gave you a chance to get one ticket only, and only in a ballot, not a guaranteed ticket. Remember every one of those games is mid week and probably requires you to take time off work

But being in NZ doesnt exactly give you the chance to do all that Frankie. Im sure if someone was living in the UK theyd do all the same things.

Its a load of sh*te to say that you can't support a team if you are not from there. Its usually poms who suggest this as well i might add. But no point going on about it,its not like anyones opinion on this is going to change. We passionately support our team,so that opinion isnt going to change just because some Brit says we can't...and well the other side perhaps don't understand,so thats not going to change either.

There is a massive difference between watching a game on TV and spending ï¿½150 and 16 hours going to watch it live.

So if my side came to say Australia,and i spent $1000 going over to see them,by your definition id be more of a fan than those who live in the city,and have more chances to see them live than i do...because i wouldve spent more money to see the side?

These would describe me and others who support an english side whilst watching and supporting them.

Doesnt have to be about where you live,though it can be a reason why you support a side and are passionate about it...but it isnt the only reason.

That is different - it is a one off.

The thing is that it is easy to claim to be a die-hard fan of something when all that entails is occassionally having to get up in the middle of the night to watch them on TV.

The reason that people in the UK talk about how foreign fans are not as passionate (whatever that word actually means in this case) is becuase you feel a loss more when you are wedged, freezing wet into an Inter-City bus seat for 8 hours having sat through an abject performace when the whole thing has cost ï¿½100 compared to having watched it on TV, and you appreciate the win more in the same situation. The highs are higher and the lows are lower when you have made a significant sacrifice to be part of the whole thing.

And the number of people who claim they will go to every game when they get to the UK and then don't due to costs, time, work, etc (and I include me in this group) is very, very high. That is when you realise that compared to hundreds or thousands of others (depending on the size of the club you support) you are in no way a passionate supporter.

Perhaps Die hard is different to passionate?

Die hard being spending every possible penny you have to support your side anywhere etc as you're describing. Passionate being by definition,passionate.

But you got to admit,to say you can't passionately support a team (or as has been said or even just hinted at...that you can't support one at all) just because you aren't from the city,is a little ridiculous.

I admit,it is logictically impossible for someone in NZ to be a die hard fan and follow the side around. But what is being suggested is that you cannot possibly feel any connection to the club,or feel passionate about a club from the other side of the world,this is the point im saying is wrong.

Of course you can support them, just don't kid yourself that you're as passionate as fans who give up a hell of a lot to suppor ttheir team through thick and thin. For example, how many people who decide to move to the UK would go and live in Manchester so they could watch United every week?

As Frankie says, watching football can be a pretty dispiriting affair...it's expansive, it's hard to get tickets, you have to give up a lot (especially if you wan to watch away or european games) and especially as you get a bit older it means not spending the little free time you get off doind something that your other half probably hates

I only say this because this is exactly how I felt after coming to the UK and going to a few Perennial strugglers Liverpool games.

Just watch as much football as you can somthing will trigger you. for example Big Dunc + Last 5 min goal vs Utd = Evertonian ever since.

You're a passionate fan when your team loses and it burns in your guts for a week, your family know to avoid mentioning it and your work colleagues know to stay out of your way. Got nothing to do with how much money you spend imo.
