My brother defected to Lancashire in the early 70s, marrying into a
Burnley supporting family (but I don't talk about him) so I have a
tinsy-winsy bit of time for them.
Burnely was the first away game I went to, in 1969, on one of
those old football special trains. 0-0, their goallie, Peter
Mellor, had a Mosser of a game.
Back to now and after the Adalaide game, back in the hotel we
were staying, a guy getting out of the lift as we were getting in
- he was in a group of middle aged well dressed people
probably going out for dinner - said "did they win", I said "no,
lost" He said "Again?" looking down his nose, as if we should feel
ashamed!
Though I'd not felt too unhappy with the game, this perturbed
me for a while -- until I clarified it in my head - it's not
whether you win, it's who you are that counts. I'm lucky enough to
support two of the worlds better clubs in terms of who we are, and
week by week results are not the most significant thing. They will
come. History is waiting for us.
