Reasons For Not Making It Overseas

This is about English footballers who went overseas looking for adventure and a differnt way of playing the game and who failed misrably.

The leader of this madcapped band of Englishman has to be the great Ian Rush. Loved by his Scouse brethen, scorer of great and important goals. But when he decided to moved to the great Juventus, it all went horribly wrong for Rushie.

On his return to England he was famously quoted as saying"Well they all spoke funny, and none of it was in English", well what do you expect Ian, there Italians, and your in there country now. So why didnt you learn there language, it may of helped you bond with your new teamates.

The reason why I raise this, is that very few of Englands finest actually play in the other leagues, and maybe this is a reason why England fail when it comes to the big matches. I raise this o hearing the news that the special one has gone to Inter, and apparently his first port of call is to Cheski on a raid for Frankie L. Now Cheslki fans wont like to lose a player of his class, but England could gain from having an established star playing in Serie A.

Its all well and good saying players like Rio, play a European style at the moment, but they play there football in England. Yes against European players, but mainly English managers and English historical tatics.

So instead of us wanting to buy British, maybe we should let a few of our top boys, see what Spain, Italy, Germany, Holland and France are like by actually joining there top sides.

Very valid point, England is one of the few national teams whose majority all play in the same league. Owen was a failure at real Madrid.
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

Henry a failure at Barcelona, only because of the coach though

barring Luca Toni and Cannavaro, Italy has most of its players based in Serie A. It didnt stop them winning the world cup.

Its not an excuse, its a fact. Englishman dont like learning another language, hence the reason that most of us who do leave come to English speaking countries. Or in the case of Owen Hargreaves, you dont have a choice to move, as his father was in the army based in Germany, so thats where he played. I cant remember to many recent Englishman who have played in Europe, and most of those that did, went becasue there was an English manager at a club. Example when Venables managed Barcalona, he had several Englishman in the team. Like Sparky, Gary Linekar, Stevie Archabald, and funny when Wenger was manager of Monaco he signed Waddle and Hoddle, but if memory serves me correctly, they had both finished there international careers when they went there.

I think a reason why they dont go, is that they fear they wont get picked for England if there playing in Europe, which certiantly wouldnt be the case.

Owen certainly didnt do anything at Madrid.

To be fair, Owen wasn't always a first choice selection but I think his goals per game ratio wasn't too bad.

Was McManaman a regular for England when he was at Real?

Yes, British then, he played his football in England, thats being a tad padentic, but Sparky is a  Welshman. But Britih players only ever tended to play overseas when the manager was English Toshack and Souness seemed to employ British players.

Maca was the execption, the Real fans loved him, as he played the way that they liked to watch, and when he was offered a 5 or 6 year contract at something like 70,000 a week, he would of been stupid to off said no. I think the Liverpool fans forgave him for it, as it wasnt like he was signing for an English club.

I also reckon that Gazza wasnt a sucess when he was with Lazio, a few flashes of brilliance, but the majority of his time there, he was either injured or drunk!!

Harsh call...Is being Barca's top scorer deemed a failure now?
