This guy is back on the radar for $24m, is Wenger really going to shell out for that position after neglecting it for how long?

http://www.whoscored.com/Players/67424/Show/Grzego...

Averaging 82.8% passing, 3.4 tackles, and 2.5 intercepts per game across La Liga and Europa League.

If we bought him, as he's played Europa League would he be cup tied for Champions League?

Wilshere assists Oxlade-Chamberlain for England's first goal, Wilshere can't do too much wrong for the Three Lions at the moment it would seem.

Oh sweet, looks like Welbeck has pulled his hamstring. Edit: spoke too soon

So assuming we have no new injuries I'd like to see

                    Welbeck

    Cazorla Sanchez Walcott

          Ramsey Wilshere

 Gibbs Chambers Mertesacker Bellerin

                        Szy

However I imagine arteta and Monreal will both probably start

So a 4th consecutive man of the match for Wilshere in the deep CM role for England. We have to have reached the point now where he's the one to try there for Arsenal. First name on the team sheet for the national team at present.

bit of a difference playing that role against Scotland and Slovenia, and playing against Man Utd (even if it is the worst United team in a long time).

Of course it hasn't been against top opposition but fact remains he's put in four very classy performances in a row and definitely shown enough to suggest he can play there.

Doesn't much matter who the opposition is with passes like this to be fair. Made so many of them in the last few England games and Rooney has cocked them up almost every time.

Welbeck to Wilshere to Ox to goal. Loving watching England at the moment! Highlights the difference in the way Arsenal play though. As soon as Wilshere gets the ball everyone in the front three makes a run; two to goal and one towards the ball. If that was Arsenal all three would come short.

AJC28 I can watch those on repeat all day, the finish from Ox was ugly but effective, but that pass is stunning

I don't think anyone doubts his passing ability (especially here) - the issue would be the tactical indiscipline, the not very good tackling and the ability to effectively break up play and shield a very average defence.

For most of the games in the premier league he would be good enough there, in much the same way that Arteta and Flamini are good enough there for most games in the premier league. The problems would be when they play any of the top 7 or 8 teams, and European Cup games.

I disagree. I think it's his best position and it's where he played his best full season, culminating in the best individual performance I've ever seen from an Arsenal player against Barcelona and Xavi no less. He and Ramsey also played alongside each other to dominate Man United's midfield in a result that nearly denied them the title. I want to see it tried and think it could work. Flamini is no longer a Premiership standard player and Arteta's legs have gone making him barely ok for most games anymore.

Ajc your memory is deceiving you.

If I'm not mistaken Wilshere has never played a game for us as the deepest lying midfielder. The season you speak of (2010-11) had Wilshere and Song playing in midfield together, Wilshere the more advanced of the two, and with Fabregas ahead of them (Ramsey played in Fabregas' role for the ManU game).

Wilshere said himself yesterday that the game against Switzerland was the first time he'd ever played that role.

That performance against Barce was the best I've seen Wilshere play, I personally wouldn't have him as a DM and he played all his youth football in an advanced position which is what he knows best. And possibly why he offers about as much defensive assistance as Carlos Hernandez.

Can we win this weekend?  Heart says yes, head says draw. Could do with Giroud back in there given Wellbecks goalscoring run of late.

I'm not against Wilshere playing there, I believe he is a good tackler and has a good engine, I just worry about his positioning and defensive decision-making - only because he doesn't have the experience there that a career DMF would have.

I reckon we should take advantage of this England situation and just watch how he progresses for them, particularly how he goes when they eventually come up against a high quality midfield.

And yes I'm with you POL - heart says win, head says draw (or even loss given our mindf*ck against them of late).

Oh and that 2011 Barca performance, yea that was just amazing.

That game was one of my favourites of all time. I think even Wenger said it was his most memorable Arsenal match. Barca were at the top of their game in 2011, up there with the best teams in the history of football, they were up 1-0 and cruising, and we slapped them in the nuts.

That Arshavin goal, oh man, I watched that over and over and over. Pretty much the perfect counter-attacking goal.

I meant that he was in a deeper CM role back then than what he currently plays for us which is either as a 10 or winger. I also don't think you necessarily need one specialist DM if you have 2 guys who can both play a box to box role and alternate who does what. I believe Ramsey and Wilshere could do that. This is on the belief that we won't spend big on some DM beast and the only other options are Arteta and Flamini. That's not exactly working this season is it? Would love to go back to the 4-2-3-1 that was so successful last season with Wilshere and Ramsey as the 2. Ox, Sanchez, Ozil and Walcott in front of them.

As for this weekend. It's United. On paper we should beat them currently, but that was also true last season when they were a laughing stock.

In theory I'd be inclined to agree ajc, I do like the idea of it, but I feel it's a bit soon - I think we'd need Wilshere training with us in that position for a while, and perhaps try it in a game of lesser importance first...

Yeah, that was special. First moment in football that actually made me cry with joy to beat them and thinking about what they put us through with Fabregas for years with the DNA and forcing Barcelona shirts on him at Spain meetups and all that. In light of the current discussion, it was Wilshere's pass from in our own third that started the move and opened up the whole pitch.

Speaking of positions, we have to play Chambers at CB don't we surely?

I get the feeling we'll be seeing Monreal in there.

To be fair to the guy I actually think he's made a decent fist of it. Problem is he's just not strong in the air, and he's easily bullied by big strikers - hence why he's a fullback by trade...

Monreal gets a bit of stick but he's exactly the type of player you need in your squad if you want to have any ambition - strength in depth (at LB, not CB though!)

And yes ajc, that first time ball from wilshere opened it up big time. In fact, the ball from bentdner before that was actually very decent too - he had 4 barca players shutting him down, I even remember screaming at him to just hoof it at the time!

This was always my favourite youtube vid of that arshavin goal, taken on someone's phone, you gotta turn up the audio

I yelled 'hoof it' bout the same time as this guy yells 'get it out'!

Nasri is a c*nt but the camera angle shows perfectly how he sizes the situation up, very good play.

Underrated finish from arshavin too, does well to keep it down in a situation like that

There's quite a few crowd shots of the goal on youtube, great viewing while waiting for the nix!

This one's great too, listen to the crowd!;

Christ I miss Arshavin

If Wenger ever de severs the sack it is because of his failure to maximise the attacki I intellect of this player.

Game changed when Wilshere missed that chance. Arteta & the Ox were immense today. Giroud goal good. Gibbs Oggy atrocious.
