Well done Spain, overall. With only one goal against them all tournament they were always going to be hard to beat. Especially hard to beat on a day when Argentina were unexpectedly low key (slow in transition, no shots on target). The Argentinian goalkeeper was excellent today but should not have been put under this kind of pressure. Yellow cards did not help Argentinian cause. But Argentina will be back at the finals again one day, while Spain should enjoy their well deserved day in the sun.

Think going 48 teams was mostly a success.
64 teams worth a look at, though it will make qualifying in many Confeds a bit dull ie remove alot of the tension to qualify.
Spain worthy winners. They will be tough to beat at home in 2030.

It really frustrated me how Argentina chose to play for penalties rather than actually attack because they were more than capable of it and gave Spain a few scares at the end once they were down. With how Emi was playing today they absolutely could've pulled it off, which would've been an assault on football aha. Also I'm not a believer in FIFA rigging it for Argentina, but that disallowed goal was an absolute disgrace and it's stuff like that that's really turned everyone against Argentina.
Deserved win for Spain though, been fantastic all tournament. The fact that they've only conceded one goal all tournament is absolutely nuts!

Fernandez has form in the EPL. If I recall correctly he was sent off for pulling another player's hair.

I am not fan of the Spanish team by any stretch of the imagination, but today is an excellent result for football.
Who'd have thought a team that chooses to run around with a Falklands flag after they'd qualified for a world cup semi-final would be so pathetic?
Argentina have been grubs forever, but this tournament they reached new highs. Many fans turned a blind high because Messi who despite his immense talent, showed he's just as pathetic as the rest of them with his attempt to get Cucurella sent off. And how hilarious is a player getting carded for dissent when they go and get a silly yellow later on??? What a grub!

You have to separate the man and country from the players, but Argentine players always have been the most unlikable bricks on the field, not all, but most of them.

Been to Argentina a couple of times. BA is one of my favourite cities to visit.
Some great architecture, super interesting (if sometimes dark) history, fantastic steaks and a people generally incredibly warm and friendly.
Best chance of finding an English speaker in Sth America as well. Had a couple of young tour guides who had done the NZ working holiday visa thing. Well worth a visit.
But Nixie you have to see that the behaviour of your football team is making them very unpopular. For sure some raw emotion post that loss, but they were 2nd best by miles today. The 1-0 scoreline was deceptive. Almost from the start the plan was trying to hold on to ET, and then if they got lucky pens. Then to act like petulant wankers because they feel robbed (presumably the red card) is piss poor.
Love watching Messi, but if Argy fall back into the pack a bit now his international career is finished I won't shed a tear. Be interesting if most of their pool games are in Spain in 2030. The reception could be less than warm. They might hope to be based Morocco or Portugal.
And re the racism thing. One Friday night in BA back in 2018 I was in some sort of Seven Eleven run by an Asian family. In came a guy in a suit pretty boozed. He was a happy drunk but for the next 5 mins, he referred to the owner as 'Kim Jong Un'. Too pidgin Spanish me, it all seemed non hostile. The owner not angry, more a tired I've heard that 'joke' a thousand time before expression. But it was clear it was the sort of 'banter' that you just don't do in our part of the world anymore. It just sort of had a well out of date 70s-80s NZ, feel to it. Like a society where casual racism is still fine & dandy.

for sure, I will admit that we are not good losers when we lose, and in this game we all admit we were well out-classed.. & yes, some of our players are "unsavoury" to say the least, but this will never change, whether people like it or not.. Its just how they play football, and how they grow up playing.

Yes, we have racism in Argentina & a lot of is casual racism.. we also have a domestic violence issue that no one wants to solve/or educate people on, our economy is shit, our politicians are corrupt & we live in a cycle of hope and being let down by them.. But, its ours, and we got raise our kids to be better people & citizens like anywhere..
Anyway, I will go outside, have a Malbec from the Mendoza region, watch the 2022 final & by tomorrow my tears will make way for a new optimistic future :D

A Falklands referendum in 2013 had only 3 islanders oppose UK sovereignty. Running around after a football game with a political banner, referencing a literal invasion, is at best silly and at worse quite dangerous.
I mention this not because I want to have a full blown discussion about the history of the Falklands, but to say it's hard not to tarnish the country with one brush considering the accepting attitude to this sort of behavior.
With all that said, I intend to visit Argentina as part of a wider South America trip next year and I hope y'all prove me wrong!

Hey Nixieboys222 - as I said somewhere else earlier - it is a state of mind as much as a society. No-one is asking you to diss the place you grew up in and its football-mad culture; but a lot of people (a global audience no less) saw the players' petulance at the loss today which translated into a sense of ill-spirited entitlement. The carry-on after the final whistle sullied for me the memory we all have of the excellent players Argentina have produced, from Ardilles through Kempes, Maradona, de Maria and Maxi Rodriguez, and to a degree even the slightly younger Messi himself. Those great players of yesterday knew how to disport themselves through wins and through losses. Today this wasn't that.
Nobody robbed Argentina of the win today. As a team they could not produce a single good shot on goal and were then sulking at the death, in a bad way. But it is a measure of one's cojones to accept being beaten by a better team on the day. Coming second can be celebrated after all is said and done, and used as a motivation for the future. This way young players of today can be inspired instead of inheriting future expectations sullied by bad memory.

Overall I thought this was a pretty good World Cup. My earliest memory of a World Cup is 98, this is one of the better ones I have seen since then.
Pros:
- New Zealand back and providing some good memories for us.
- Timings of matches. Yes lots were on during work hours but beats missing out on games in the middle of the night imo.
- Lots of decent matches including a few classics in the earlier knockout rounds.
- Cape Verde leading the charge of the minnows with a great campaign. The second goal against Argentina in particular a highlight.
- All of the big boys turning up, leading to arguably the greatest golden boot race of any World Cup.
- Referees by and large clamping down on timewasting and playacting, and VAR leaving them to it.
Cons:
- Not enough heavyweight clashes.
- Lack of real jeopardy in the group stages with so many teams going through in third place.
- Not many true upsets. Paraguay over Germany and maybe Norway beating Brazil at a push. Wouldn't count the latter personally.
- Every "hydration" break.
- The entire carry on during the final excluding the football.
- Trump and Infantino. Everything about them and everything they did during the tournament.
Half of the cons are not to do with the actual football, although still impacted the tournament.

But it heavily dilutes the tournament. It also makes it near impossible for anyone to host on their own anymore, apart from the States, and i don't want it going back there anytime soon.
Looking forward to the centenary World Cup in four years time. Will be the first and possibly last for a while where nearly all matches take place in iconic football stadiums. At least this one had the Azteca.

I thought the "clashes of the heavyweights" were very much the order of the day after the group games ended. France-Morocco game was one for me, and England-Mexico.

Just trying to make Nixieboys feel a bit better as his team, even its legends behave like muppets, and they get a lot of hate!

(The cricket mad Hadlee’s views on South Africa were helped of course by seeing the cricketing viewpoint of the talented Clive Rice, his opening bowling partner at Nottingham, miss out on test cricket and perhaps he didn’t get the feel for the injustices of the apartheid system and the broader picture as personally.)
On the football side, does this mean the tactical shift of the Premier League towards big forwards and a lot of penalty box grappling will recede or revert back towards controlling possession?

People are dumping on Argentina because the way their team conducted themselves after the match….and they deserved it.
But I don’t really get the hate for the on-field stuff. A lot of it is just football culture. Football is just played in a different manner in Sth America. It’s robust and hard and often violent. There is old saying that you play to the whistle. Which is exactly what Argentina did in this WC. FIFA decided that they would let stuff go and so Argentina and Paraguay played to the whistle.
It might not be to the taste of Europeans but it was up to the referees to stop the hits and other shithousery. But they didn’t. Don’t blame the South Americans for playing rough Sth American football. The referees condoned it.
As for the country of Argentina. Don’t write it off because of a group of football players. I encourage anyone to visit. BA is one of my all time favourite cities. It’s got a rich culture, great architecture good food and wine. But it’s the people who really make it good. They are warm, friendly, engaging and lots of fun.

24 hours after & I think everyone has calmed down… Media & the public has called out Parades & some of post match behaviour, and many want him gone from the national team & Boca.
I think what upset me more then the loss itself is how people on here & generally on the internet go from attacking the national team to the people & country they never stepped a foot into! People on here mentioned how ICE should get involved in arresting badly behaved Argentina fans, to “how is it a surprise they behave this way, look at how many Nazis they invited” - it felt almost personal & many Argentines feel this way.. it felt completely unnecessary & almost like people had a hate to the whole country rather then its footballers?
Egyptians are calling to boycott Argentina and to send the Argentine ambassador home & a Swiss politician called to give Argentinians less visas.. how did we get this point? Over a game of football??
Anyway, Spain deserved winners, and the World Cup was a success in many ways, nice to NZ involved also! Here is 4 more years of waiting & we do it all over again :)

Probably, Nixieboys222, because we still look up to sportspeople as if they were our betters in spirit and manners, so when they fail to live up to these standards we are quick to dump on them. And also because when it happens on a global stage it is hard to escape the scrutiny. But then, this pile-on is probably no better than a Paraguayan senator dissing on Mbappe.

Looking up to sport people is stupid in my opinion, we should look up to dr’s, scientists, engineers, people who contribute positively to our world.. but i take your point, the players behaved badly, and so we need to tarnish the whole country in the same brush is not something I do, as I think it’s important to seperate the athletes to the country.. Heck, many of us here had great sympathy to the Irani team in their ordeals, as people were smart enough to seperate the athletes to their government… not sure why it can’t be done here?

Losing with a smile on our face has not always been the Kiwi way, especially with Rugby. in 1999 The All Blacks were beaten by France in the Semi Final of The Rugby World Cup and Kiwis took it real badly.

There were all kinds of frustrations dumped on Argentina.
1.VAR and the reactionary idea it’s killing the game. Re-refereeing in particular being an issue.
2. FIFA being very interested in getting as much cash as possible out of the tournament. This was then followed to a conclusion of fixing the tournament for Messi by online chatter.
3. Trump and Gianni, the Americanisation of hydration breaks, halftime shows and the blatant political involvement in the Balogun red card. Protesting Argentina became a way to protest this breach of the rules.
4. The external politics of MAGA racism and authoritarianism, including the US loan to Argentina, seeming to bring them in the tent from others perspectives.
5. The external issues of the US, Israel and Palestine.
6. The Iranian-US war.
The Iranian team, to their credit protested their treatment and very gracefully made the football about football.
The Egyptian team, in my opinion, were a disgrace. They tried to leverage all of the above against Argentina and succeeded not in their football, but in stirring up crap. The system is awkward but far from broken.
And then Enzo, Simeone and buddies are just unlikable anyway and their tactics were wrong much of the time, because they didn’t play.
Edit: Also I’ve never really been a Messi guy, being raised on TVNZ UK highlights, but particularly the cup they went close against Germany iirc, I saw pals from other Latin countries for whom a Messi and Argentina win was a win for Latin America against Europe. And they were devastated then. Argentina was representing their whole continent and Messi was the patron saint.
I think we like sports because they’re not real. It’s entertainment. We love heroes and villains, especially when they can’t affect our safety or anything much beyond that. We can boo Enzo and go to work on Monday.

Apart from the sheer beauty of good football, one of the main reasons I watch it is because it is, or should be, divorced from daily politics. The moment I see someone attaching a whole bunch of Important Causes to a game of football and projecting their own personal frustrations and grief onto a sports' team success or otherwise, I run a mile. It can be a leveller among nations and peoples, making it into a divider instead diminishes it.

Hopefully the next WC in real football countries like Spain, Portugal and Morocco will restore the WC back to how it was. But I doubt it. FIFA smell the cash. I suspect sky high ticket prices, games with ad breaks and rife corruption will now be the new WC norm.
