My predictions USA 10-0 Vietnam - US can be brutal as shown last World Cup, Vietnams recent results and inexperience of great concern Netherlands 3-1 Portugal - Portugal have a decent team but not as good as the Dutch, they'll be competitive but lose this one USA 2-1 Netherlands - entertaining watch for the people of Welly in the WC final 2019 rematch, US will be hungrier and edge a close game. Portugal 5-0 Vietnam - We saw what Portugal did to NZ and then how we dominated Vietnam... connect the dots, this is gonna be one-sided Portugal 1-1 USA - USA might rotate players here and go a bit easier, Portugal desperate to get through will fight to a draw Vietnam 0-4 Netherlands - Will be Vietnams most credible performance against a Dutch side that may also (cautiously) rotate.
USA win the whole thing, Netherlands to the quarterfinals
If you're in Wellington when the Netherlands vs USA game is on (Thursday 27th, 1.00) - then come and join the big Netherlands Fan Parade from the Fan Zone to the Stadium. It leaves the Wellington Fan Zone (Queens Wharf/Shed 6) at around 11.00 an aims to get to the Stadium around 12 (so everyone can get into the Stadium easily before kick-off at 1.00). There will be hordes of Orange-dressed crazies and others led by around 50 Drummers and Dancers from Wellington Batucada (Wellington's big Brazilian Samba drumming band). The Dutch love to party and this will be a sports parading party like no other. Its backed by the Netherlands Embassy and Football Federation. Everyone is welcome - including the USA fans. The more the merrier!!
Sounds fun. Got the day off and going as a neutral (I'm an England fan) and been meaning to check out the fan zone so might come down for it. Got a couple of Dutch friends (NZ born but Dutch descent and supporting the Dutch) who will no doubt be there.
A shame the Vietnamese keeper conceded that second goal. Awful goalkeeping. Worse than Alex Morgan's penalty attempt which the commentator described as "rotten". Not much of an exhibition this match.
Honestly not that impress by the USA tbh. Definitely not a fun team to watch like Spain last night. Really expected more especially against such poor opponents.
Well certainly didn't expect that score. Think Vietnam will be quite happy with that result, overall think their keeper did well keeping the Americans out.
Trần Thị Kim Thanh is going to brag to her grandchildren/great-niblings: "yeah, I saved a penalty from Alex Morgan in the World Cup. Weren't no big thing."
Crowd went wild when Rapinoe came on, but she didn't do anything special. I think the USWNT are still working the cobwebs out
Yeah I was underwhelmed by the USA .Pleased I got to see Morgan and Rapinoe in the flesh but both looked out of sorts.Awful penalty by Morgan Very one sided and I don't recall Vietnam having a shot. They were very dogged and ran all day (cue Vietnam war comparisions) Like Thursday night a great mixed crowd looking to enjoy themselves i am sure USA will get better
I mean, some older people here will brag that they saw Pelé, Maradona, George Best in the flesh... my daughter got to see Rapinoe and Morgan.
Worst thing about the game was the goddamn Karen sitting a few rows in front of me kept trying to start a Mexican wave. Weirdest thing was the white lady carrying the old flag of *South* Vietnam.
I think we shouldn't be so precious about it. I'd rather we have people attending and enjoying themselves rather than gatekeeping how they do that. (Saying that, I don't take part in the wave myself but that's personal preference)
Is it possible to single handedly complain that the tournament is "amateurish" while not having the internal capabilities to re-arrange flights and hotels?
(Granted if the cricket pitch is in the middle that's pretty poor)
Not as easy as it sounds when you have 35+ people, only one viable airline option outside special charter and a destination that already has all the suitable accommodation fully booked (apparently there’s some football thingy happening) let alone any with enough free rooms for that many people. I’m sure they gave the internal capabilities to book flights an accommodation, but they need to exist,
USA-Vietnam the worst game of the tournament so far.
Vietnam were as woeful as predicted and basically concentrated on keeping the score down, didn't even have a shot.
The USA... they genuinely looked like they couldn't care less and like they were bored doing some menial task at work. A very strange parallel to the brutal win over Thailand 4 years ago.
Going back to the Mexican wave discussion, I had heaps of kids around me at today's game (including 2 of my own) and they went fudgeing bananas for the Mexican Waves.
Was very very cool to see them enjoying themselves at the football
Will be an interesting game. USA with more to play for as they have Portugal next up where as Ned play Veitnam. So USA will not want to lose the most. Key player for USA if they want to go deep in this tournament is Rose Lavelle who is coming back from injury so be interesting to see if she starts. For Ned they are obviously without Meidema and her replacement Beernstyn got injured in last match. So be interesting to see who else they have got as a striker and if they are any good. I'm picking 1-1 draw. I saw the Dutch in Dunedin. They were pretty solid. But I thought set up very defensive and were conservative going forward. Can they hold out the USA with that attitude?

Was a disappointing game in Dunedin - would have liked to see them push more for the killer 2-0 goal. But fair play to them because they were still the better sides and ensured Portugal created hardly anything.
Looks like Der Gragt might be injured. She would be a big loss for Ned. Prob there most influential player. Expect Levelle to make a big difference for USA
