Women's World Cup 2023 - Ozealand

It's no surprise that finally someone has figured out that combining with New Zealand is not merely the only way Australia can possibly meet a 32-team Women's World Cup in 2023 - the expansion from 24 teams was flagged by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in June - but it presents Australia's best chance of becoming hosts.

By itself, Australia will not be hosts.

With New Zealand, we have a much better chance because, as I outline in my book Whatever It Takes - the Inside Story of the FIFA Way, Oceania is an “open file” in FIFA since Australia left at the end of 2005.

Prior to their hosting of the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, New Zealand officials expressed interest in bidding for the hosting rights of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.[21] FIFA's director of tournaments, Colin Smith, called New Zealand a "major contender" to host the Women's World Cup should they bid.[22] on 25 February 2019 New Zealand Football announced that it will put forward to bid for 2023.[23]

NZF have made completed an expression of interest form to FIFA and are one of nine countries alongside Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, Korea (who have expressed interest in a joint bid with DPR Korea Football Association) and South Africa.

Fudge yeah! I honestly think this was our only chance to have (some) of the World Cup here. Agree with the article too that I think it helps improve Australia bid having us along pushing for the votes than going their own.

Be interesting to see how they divide the games, assume we will get a pool or two and two quaters. Would hope also a semi but that might be pushing it to share with Australia.

At this stage the Australia/New Zealand bid is up against Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, South Africa, South Korea and/or North Korea (expressing interest in a joint bid).

Here is upcoming process

• January/February 2020: Inspection visits to the member associations
• April 2020: FIFA will publish the bid evaluation reports
• May 2020: Expected appointment date of the host(s) by the FIFA Council; it will be decided by 37 FIFA board members whose ballots will be published after the vote.

South Africa, the Koreas and Argentina have pulled out so its

Who knows with fifa politics but I feel like the fact the WWC has never been played in South America means it will go to Brazil or Colombia 

South America also has a petty poor track record of supporting women's football outside of Brazil, and hosted a senior (men's) World Cup in 2014, when Asia has been waiting since 2007. The feeling around the bid is that it will come down to Aus-NZ v Japan. Will be the only chance in our lifetimes for Fifa to ever get Oceania in the senior World Cup mix.

The Fifa council has 37 members – Infantino, nine others from Uefa, seven from Asia and Africa, five from South America and Concacaf, and three from Oceania.

Think you can lock in the three Oceania votes for Aus-NZ, while Japan, Colombia, and Brazil each have a rep on the council, so it's 3-1-1-1 as things stand.

Australia does not have a member, sadly.

The original FIFA Council was meant to meet in early June 2020 in Addis Ababa. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has required FIFA to alter their selection plans.

What are our chances of actually being selected as hosts like?

It will be us (and Australia) or Japan.

Japan already have the Womens olympic tournament in 2021. Surely that works in our favour to get the 2023 WC.

Take out the ones that are Olympics + Men's World Cup (as the Olympics has never been a big deal for men in the World Cup era) and you're left with...

2019/2024, where the IOC put the Olympics five years after the World Cup.

2007/2008, where the IOC put the Olympics five years after the World Cup (it was originally scheduled to be in China in 2003, but shifted to 2007 automatically when SARS made that a no-go).

and 1996/1999, where the US was the only bidder for the World Cup.

Proven big event host with plenty of infrastructure (Japan) vs somewhere new and historic (Australia/NZ) seems to be the basic breakdown of the contest.

Australia needs to Tidy up its Football/State in fighting over commitment to resources.

You can take out all the ones you want and come up with countless spurious excuses for why, but the fact remains there have been several times where the Olympics and major FIFA tournaments have been in the same city on the same cycle, so saying Australia/New Zealand are more likely to get it than Japan is like saying I've tossed a coin and got heads 3 times in a row so more likely now to get tails.

What makes a place new and historic?

"There have been several times where the Olympics and major FIFA tournaments have been in the same city on the same cycle" isn't the issue though, it's whether Fifa decision makers have decided to put a major event in a country that's only just hosted one (or, more accurately, just going to have hosted one), something they've only done once before (because the men's Olympics football tournament isn't a major event) when they had no option but to. To do a proper analysis I'd have to look at whether they've had the option to but decided not to, but I can't be arsed – plus this is the first time it's been chosen by the Fifa Council with votes being made public, so there's not exactly precedent. I think it's fair to say that hosting successive major women's events in the same country wouldn't do much to grow the game, but who knows where that sits in the Fifa Council's priorities. 

As for the two questions...

A, past experience in hosting big events and a well-established intercity transport network, grounds, and accomodation (proven).

B, Australia and New Zealand have never hosted senior World Cups before (new) and this would be the first (and almost certainly last) senior World Cup in Oceania (historic).

If the bid evaluation reports put the two bids within cooey of each other on the first point, the second one might make all the difference.

The 37-member FIFA Council will hold an open vote, with the result of each ballot and each voter's choice to be made public on the FIFA website.

Is this the first live open vote for FIFA ?

The 2026 Men's World Cup was – though that was member associations, not members of the Fifa Council.
