My latest FM game needed to be a bit different, as it was getting a
bit stale.
So I found an update which had EVERY player starting the game out
of contract and on a free transfer!
It's been really fascinating so far. I started as Arsenal -
obviously it doesn't matter a massive deal who you start with, but
club reputation, wage budget, etc is important.
There are obviously some huge, drawn-out battles for certain
players signatures, whilst others go under the radar for ages. But
it gives you the chance to create a fantasy side, of all your
favourites players, or what ever.
My squad includes:
Keepers - Cech, Craig Gordon, Kasper Schmeichel, and
Nikopolidis
Defence - Gallas, Nesta, Bargazli, Carragher, Grosso, Barry, and
youngsters including Micah Richards, vanden Borre, Bale, Pique.
Mids - Italian engine of Gattuso, Pirlo, De Rossi, plus Fabregas,
Kaka, Giggs, Christiano Ronaldo, Robben, Bentley, and Chris James
;)
Forwards - Rooney, Torres, Huntelaar, Podolski, plus youngsters
like Higuain, Rossi, Agbonlahor, Walcott, and Vonlanthen
Obviously not just a "buy all the best FM players" effort, as that
would be a bit lame. So a mix of my favourite players (eg Giggs,
Gattuso, Grosso, Cech) with players I'd never managed before (eg
Rooney, Ronaldo, as I would never manage Man U ;), and certified FM
stars (Vanden Borre,
Higuain, etc).
Obviously, it's tricky to balance getting carried away and having
too many players for each position etc.
Afterwards, I noticed I had probably been paying far too much for
wages (because I was so desperate to get these players, but because
they weren't contracted, it appears the computer controlled clubs
are picking them up for pretty low wages).
