Next generation consoles coming out at the end of the year with Microsofts xbox one and Sonys PS4 being the main contenders.

Anyone planning on getting either or and if so which one?

I think i will be getting a xbox one when i hustle up enough money i think about 700ish with ps4 being $100 cheaper .

I am welcoming anyone who could possibly persuade me to go for ps4 tho cause the two cant really be seperated by much

Ps4 by a landslide. Cheaper, better and hasnt gone the way of XBox has with DRM - you can still rent/buy 2nd hand/borrow games.

In a weak moment I preordered mine.

I used to have a PS2 and when that crapped out  after umpteen years of use, I switched to an Xbox 360. I love it BUT I will not/will refuse to buy the new Xbox One. A rip off if ever I saw. If I was going to upgrade, I'd definately go for the PS4.

Didn't Bungee recently say that Destiny is going to be cross-platform?

What if you move house.
Also if you wanted to try a game before buying, you can't do that anymore.
Ps4 is the better gaming console, Xbox one is an entertainment console.

i am sure if you move house and you internet is disconnected you xbox isn't gonna break down forever

also there are reviews and demos you can read/play before buying games

i cant see much of a difference in the two

Other than what has been already mentioned. PS4 is slightly better spec'd than Xbox One. Similar CPUs though PS4 has GDDR5 RAM rather DDR3 and a better integrated graphics card than Xbox One. Cross platform games you might not notice much difference but for PS4 only and PC ports you might notice a little better graphics. Also, you can stream PS4 games to a PS Vita and play games on a Vita if you have one. The Dualshock 4 controllers do have a multi touch pad but the PS Eye does not seem as advanced as Kinect 2. Playstation Plus will be a paid subscription service now but does come with monthly free game downloads, Xbox Live gold members will also get free monthly game downloads. I think that PS4 online capabilities are not tied to an account like Xbox Live, rather a console - which is good for multiple users of one console. PS4 is not region locked - purchase console and/or game discs anywhere in the world and they will work together. As well as some other restrictions Xbox are placing on used games etc. they are also placing restrictions on independent game developers: http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2013/06/16/why-oddworld-is-coming-to-every-platform-except-xbox/?partner=yahootix
Xbox One does have HDMI in so positioning itself as more than just a games console, it will be interesting to see how it integrates into media services available in NZ.
I will add that yes PS4 has gotten some good PR regarding its second hand/online connectivity decisions - it may not always stay that way. When the PS3 was released it allowed Linux OS installs which was taken away eventually with firmware updates. Hopefully they will see the benefit of positioning the PS4 as they have done and will keep things as they currently are.

I have a privacey concern with the XBox One. has to be on all the time? Kinnect Camera. Great way to watch what people do in their own home, data gathering. I may well be wrong of course but just throwing the suggestion out there for consideration. anyone hacking your account could be watching you 24/7.

Kinect 2 can recognise facial expressions, heart rate and tries to estimate the mood of not only the player but others in the room

Could easily see Kinect as an amazing tool for market research for microsoft.

Pre ordered PS4 from EB Games last week. I'm a Sony fanboy I won't lie. PS1 - PS4 for me !

I will point you guys over to nzgameshop.com for all your games and accessories. They ship from the UK but it takes about 4 days and everything is cheap as chips. I got 'The Last Of Us' yesterday morning. Ordered it on Wednesday......... amazing game as well if you are thinking about getting it.

Xbox One does a 180 on DRM

http://www.gameplanet.co.nz/xbox-one/news/1123210.20130620.Confirmed-Microsoft-is-dropping-the-Xbox-Ones-online-requirement/?date&title

KEY POINTS:

An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – after a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – there will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

Games will be available from Xbox Live on day of release, and these will be able to be played offline.

Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console – there will be no regional restrictions.

The Xbox One’s sharing functionality has also been altered: the sharing of games will work as it does today – gamers will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

Yeah, both consoles are now offering similar products. PS4 still with the slight performance edge, though Microsoft were touting some cloud computing - not sure how that idea is affected with today's changes (might now be only for downloaded games).
I think it will come down to exclusive titles on each console that sways people's choice.

I went into noel leemings the other day to pre order and they said Sony have exhausted their pre order allocation?  Was keen to get flybuys with it since its going to be the same price everywhere.

I was told today NOT to buy a PS4 before Feb. Apparently you are going to get fuck all in the box as the hype of being one of the first to own one will do the selling. But after February, they're gonna come with a lot more "extras" than the first release which will be a bare basic. You know, come with 3 or 4 games, extra controller etc.Allegedly of course but it was from someone who sells the consoles/

It is still cheaper to buy a ps4 and FIFA 14 !!

Most of the kinect 2.0 features will not work in NZ at launch. More info will come on this.

Lonegunman, The PS4 is sold out now and you won't be able to get it until next year anyway. But I would almost put my balls on it not coming bundled with games and a controller next Feb. Sony have never done this even back to the PS1 until at least couple of YEARS after launch. Even that was just 1 game and 1 controller at most.

Oh and one more thing, Sony are making an Oculus Rift type headgear for the PS4. if you don't know what that is you should research it. Amazing technology !

I'd like a PS4 but will sit back and wait. Happy enough with my limited edition Star Wars Xbox., If that had a bluray player instead of the standard CDrom, it'd be perfect.
