Great result, was so stunned when the i saw the net move that I just sat their like a corpse then realised that FCK we scored in the 93rd_ minute. Honestly, its like watching Scotland though except we actually scored and got a result
Brilliant result, awful game, was v concerned about how badly we lost our shape at the back. Once they actually played the game they normally play we got behind the Slovaks and then scored, inbetween times we pretended to be Brazil - badly. Posession and flat passing at the back will get us in more deep sh1t if we carry on with that lark so lets stick to our game plan and I truly believe we will spank Italy. So much so I am about to put a wodge of (the wifes) cash on it
I still don;t think the great unwashed really appreciate how momentus this is - once we get shunted into Asia we'll really struggle to qualify so it could be years and years and years before another WC. And then we come along and get a draw first off against a good side. Brilliant. And as a Scot i know what its like to not qualify, often.
Bring on the next 2 games, well done boys.

I think the great unwashed are getting the message. When the NZ Herald is full of stories about the All Whites a few days before the All Blacks are due to play, you know something's going on.

Not getting carried away about the Italy game. I think we're very one paced and one dimensional and there isn't much creativity in there, but if we can frustrate the Italians I think we can sneak something. I'm more worried abou the Paraguay game, to be honest.

Strange game. Their goal was offside. All of our team have got far better skiils than we've seen thus far in this tournament and friendlies. I wonder if it's just nerves? Classic example is Leo, who's got great ball control/dribbling skills, but he looks a bit overawed by everybody he plays against. Self-belief boys! if you click as a team you can take on anybody. Looked a bit like England, who start everything as eleven separate players, but usually end up a team and get somewhere. Italians were crap (and the other lot) in their game, so who knows? How's the Phoenix season ticket sales going? We've bought ours.......

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........

Agree about Bertos. I was very disappointed in him. From an attacking point of view he did next to nothing, he had a few chances to attack the space behind the full back and on every occasion he didn't do it. Lochhead looks more of an attacking threat than Leo does at the moment.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Forgive me for not being active in the forums last night, but I no longer have a voice, or memory of what happened past about 2am. Hangover, totally worth it.

Just watched the game. From the tears streaming down my face, I guess it's safe to say that even after all these years, I'm still a New Zealander...

Only Germany, S Korea and Netherlands have scored more than us at this World Cup...

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Like I said on 4-4-2 this morning, enjoy the result, but f..k me, I can't buy into the 'rivalry' thing here, it is dumb and fake.

Enjoy the result but. Not the spunkiest of games but you got a draw.

Bertos was shut down with two on him most of the time. They did their research. He was pretty much confined to his side. In the Nix he has licence to swtich. Dont think that same here. This gave Lockhead on other side a few more open spaces perhaps.

The Aussie/NZ rivalry is fake? Maybe from Australia's perspective, but that sh*t is real as hell in NZ.

It wasn't a big deal up until the last "friendly".  Nothing fake about that.

Marek Cech says: "We have a better team, but it was difficult, because New Zealand defended with ten players. As if it was me ten barricades."

It's probably even funnier in the original Slovak.

Bit disrespectful as we created quite a few chances throughout the game before our equaliser. It wasn't like we purposely parked the bus.

Familiar:

Captain Cristiano Ronaldo added: When your opponents play with 11 men behind the ball its difficult. They didnt risk at all and it was complicated to make space to play. They were waiting for our mistake. Were better than them and were disappointed.

Cech as graceless as C. Ronaldo.  He must be proud.

I don't think we parked the bus at all - I cant remember one instance where, having won the ball, we had to hold it up due to there being no-one in front of the ball to pass to.

Bertos had at least 3 great opportunities to run at defenders and attack the space behind them and he didn't take any of them, and I told him so from my couch!

He seems to be lacking the confidence to take people on at the moment. Hoepfully, he's saving it for the Italy game

Great quote from the BBC's 606 forum:

I had a cancelled class so watched the entire match in a bar. Everyone stared at me after the goal as I couldnt help myself. It was a strange shout of laughter and joy. All the Spanish people in the bar were rubbishing NZ saying they were people taken forcibly from the street and harangued into the team bus and sent out onto the pitch (ok slightly liberal translation but you get the dismissive nature of their view of NZ)

Actually, that's not too far away from what actually happened with our new young European players, is it. I can just imagine Ricki sending hit squads out to crash-tackle anyone whose grandma once owned a Split Enz album.

Great call mate

Interested to know what people think about where Rory Fallon played? It seemed to me that he was back in defence a lot more than he has been in previous games but maybe that was just my impression. any thoughts?

Similarly - check URL title and compare to actual title of story. These Murdoch-paper droids wrote their story before the game finished and then had to revise dramatically.

I don't really want to put a downer on it all either; but Leo disappointed me too. This level might be one step too far for him, he doesn't seem to be able to beat his man and put in decent crosses on a regular basis. Look at their equivalent Weiss, there was an excitement and trepidation every time he had the ball, Leo never did that.

In general they looked to have just that little extra spark but the AWs demonstrated what we like to think is a national trait - kept working hard, against the odds and came out with the reward. We are not going to win this world cup and we may not even win a game here but we battle hard and play to our strengths. We need to get more exposure for our guys in the bigger leagues and on the international front. More play at this level would see us ranking similar to Slovakia I reckon.
