By the way, isn't it a bit weird having a Slovak player called Cech? Isn't that like a Scottish player called "John English"?

I will allow a small moment of empathy with Slovakia.

Not in the same realms of importance, but I did think about a Sunday in September last year at RoF:

Nix 1 - Furries 1

Bertos @ 6 mins
Grossman @ 94 mins

"Phoenix till they lose"

Agree about Bertos. I was very disappointed in him. From an attacking point of view he did next to nothing, he had a few chances to attack the space behind the full back and on every occasion he didn't do it. Lochhead looks more of an attacking threat than Leo does at the moment.

Bertos was shut down with two on him most of the time. They did their research. He was pretty much confined to his side. In the Nix he has licence to swtich. Dont think that same here. This gave Lockhead on other side a few more open spaces perhaps.

If they did their research that would have found that Leo is a limited player at this level and didn't have to do much to negate his influence. Even at A League level I think he struggles at times but is playing at a level that he can compete quite adequately in. Again I don't want to appear too negative but we need to recognise our limitations and celebrate when we do well. Leo didn't set the world on fire in this game but played an important part of the team none-the-less.

I cant find mention of the fact that not one BUT 2 of the Slovaks were offside when they scored...  confirmed later by the graphics.

I thought the referees performance was poor compared to many of the other games ive seen, in consistent in many of his decisions.

this aside, we need only to score and defend one goal and were through.

Elliot played so well, that man still got some action! Bertos was shut down all the time, as mentioned previously and shown in the heat map shown by skylab, that would of been one of their tactics to shut us down, as we all know, when Bertos gets up that flank, he's like a frecken B-2 bomber, packed the fire power. Nelson did a good job trying to run them wide in the second half, my only beef with the defense was just leaving themselves a bit open again.. Other than that, biggest upset of the tournament so far I reckon.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

I thought that there should have been a straight red card for the studs up tackle from behind on Elliot.
The ref wasn't that great today.

Apart from the goal the best moment was Nelsen grabbing the shirt & laying down the law to the Slovakian player who had just chopped him down. Classic moment.

Not really. Maybe if his surname was Czech.

Off-topic but this reminds me of an anecdote from Luton Town legend Malcolm McDonald's autobiography. Can't remember exact names but it went something like this:

"One day our manager Tommy Lee came into the dressing room and said, "Is Brian O'Connor Irish?" Apparently he'd received a call from the Ireland coach interested in calling O'Connor up to the national team.

When someone replied that O'Connor wasn't Irish, Lee lost his temper. "English? English! How can he be English? O'Connor's an Irish name!"

"Hey boss, my name's McDonald and I'm English," I said.

"You be quiet! You've no right to say anything!" Lee growled at me. "You shouldn't be playing for England with a name like McDonald!"

Billy then sent our manager storming out of the room by asking, "Excuse me boss, but are you Chinese?"

When Bertos did get the ball he seemed to run at the defenders when he had the option of running into open space at speed and whipping in the cross. I think a bit of variation would be good. However, every time he did get the ball there were two defenders on him pretty quickly and appears low on confidence.
And Paston gave me the sh*ts with his botched clearance!!
Nelsen was very good and I thought it was priceless after he got taken out and there was that slow motion picture of Nelsen pointing his finger right in the guy's face.

It's possible that he's Czech ethnically (Wiki doesn't help here). There's also a Czech goalkeeper called Marek Cech as well (plays for Lokomotiv Moscow), and the other goalkeeper Cech needs no introduction.

wow reading some of these posts you would think new zealand is the number one ranked team in the world.... get your feet back on the ground!
if reid didn't score i wonder how positive some of you would have been....

for me new zealand dodged one heck of a bullet but thats what slovakia get for not killing the game off you see it time and time again in football.
weiss (playing for bolton currently so i might be biased) absoutly dominated lochead.. ive never seen a player look so good from such a sh*t defender.
the nz back 3 did alright but in saying that slovakia held back almost happy with their 1 nil lead.

attacking we had absoutly nothing. end off - took a central defender to finally get something near the goal.

all in all - new zealand were pretty poor and that was easily the slowest and worst game (technically obviously pretty exciting finish) of this world cup so far....

It was a brilliant result and one we should celebrate for a little while before worrying about the intricacies of our performance.

Where's your romance?

enjoy the result and accept that we arent world beaters, rather that we are doing what we do well.

my romance is the all whites and making the 2nd round...
do you suggest the all whites celebrate this draw on a 4 day bender and not worry about the rest of world cup? we have a 2nd round to get into....

tony lochead has to be dropped... surely!

Yeah, I saw those. Appalling, snobbish, sneering, mean-spirited rubbish. But I know something about the Irish press, and I know that the IT is prone to that kind of article. These people make Chris Rattue look like Sam Buckle.

Match stats, from the BBC Sport website:

New Zealand                       Slovakia
42%        Possession              58%
 3        Attempts on target       3
 6        Attempts off target      6
 3             Corners                   10
16              Fouls                     14

Quote from Alan Hansen:

"New Zealand have been excellent. With the team they've got on paper you'd think they have no chance, but they work really hard for each other and they are organised and when they counter-attack they have been a threat. Slovakia have been awful."

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

"Being a Partick Thistle fan sets you apart. It means youre a free thinker. It also means your team has no money." Tim Luckhurst, The Independent, 4th December 2003

All of our team have got far better skiils than we've seen thus far in this tournament and friendlies. I wonder if it's just nerves? Classic example is Leo, who's got great ball control/dribbling skills, but he looks a bit overawed by everybody he plays against. Self-belief boys! if you click as a team you can take on anybody. Looked a bit like England, who start everything as eleven separate players, but usually end up a team and get somewhere. Italians were crap (and the other lot) in their game, so who knows?
When it comes to playing with confidence, hope AWs take a leaf from North Korea in '66 World Cup who were not overawed by anyone (because they were new to international football in their case, never having entered the World Cup before, and having no real experience of teams other than their neighbours). It's important not to be intimidated by other teams' reputations and pedigree. Everyone is beatable on the day...
North Korea shocked the world by beating Italy and drawing with Chile to make the next round.
Northern Ireland in '82 similarly managed to beat hosts Spain, drawing with Yugoslavia and Honduras.
Senegal famously beat Cup- holders France in 2002 and  made the quarters.
So, who knows? Anything's possible. But last night's result on its own is really good enough for me, no matter what happens in the next two games...
