as SiNZ suggested for some countries it might be a good to have a 'designated' fans of that country topic

here in NZ it's good to have somewhere to talk football with fellow fans - til YF came along  clubrooms where about the only places

here on YF i can do without wind-up merchants and i don't go into other countries threads to take the piss

if you want to start an anti-somewhere topic feel free -  I'll stay away from the 'inevitable' anti-England one

But I will start this one for England

my main interest in the squad at the moment is whether Michael Turner will sneak in (or less likely - just) Jimmy - my hero- Bullard

My interest in the squad at this stage is that they don't get injured! In particular, Rooney as I don't think we have any comparable replacement. We can just about get away with losing a starter in the other positions if we have to.

Oh and I have no idea what's going to happen in goal. Several options, but none of them totally convincing.

yes Rooney needs to be fit

be interesting to see who is picked to select striking/attacking partners from (no doubt Harry H has a suggestion or two)

a bit unusual for England to lack a clear starting keeper

Just don't start Foster please. Green should probably get it I think. Hope that Heskey doesn't start, maybe Defoe would be better? Hopefully Young will be given alot more chances, even maybe as an impact player off the bench.

if Owen were 1st choice striker then Heskey would be a serious contender to play alongside him

but if i could only take one of Heskey -Defoe then depending on who else was in the forward mix i'd go for Defore 9 times out of 10

im not sold on heskey at all, dont tink hes good enough. but i heard someone say the reason that capello likes him is that he lifts the game of those around him, holds the ball up better for rooney. sort of like if crouch was playing hes a 7/10 and so is everyone around him but if heskey plays hes also a 7/10 but lifts everyone to a 9.

i duno though, that was just this guys view or something.

i wouldnt mind seeing bent get another shot, i know he was poos against brazil but cant be judged on one game. also wouldnt mind seeing agbonlahor just behind rooney

Heskey's role has generally been as you suggest Downey 1234,

hold the ball up ,  release it intelligently, bring players into the game in the attacking 3rd -

whether he can still do that i don't know (niether does Martin o'Neill)

I hope this World Cup England supporters don't start chanting "Rooney, Rooney" and other English rubbish at games when they aren't even playing and two other teams are having a good game.

Especially at NZ games!!Colvinator2009-11-20 21:15:23

Haha. Cheers. I realised after posting this thread is supposed to be just for England fans huh. Right, I'll respectfully respect that then!

Well done on your qualifying campaign by the way. You guys sometimes do surprise me.

See you in June!

England will win the WC if Lampard and Gerrard both "click," no doubt in my mind. We also need must players to play like they do at club level as currently I can't think of anyone who steps up and plays at the same level or better for England. I suppose Terry isn't too bad but most of the others, especially Rooney before he started scoring, just lack motivation. This WC qualifying campaign though it has been alot different, I must say and I think that is because of Capello.

yes capello has brought a new feeling of belief and pride in playing for england

it seems -  from this distance - that Cappello has sufficient respect from the players to function as a manager

I'm not sure that Sven or McClaren could get past the egos of some of the players , Cappello - so far - can

Fear not tigers, it's still there:

http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/footy/

As for our squad (yep, English and proud) I think Rob Green will end up in goal and will have to be the best of a mediocre bunch until Joe Hart is ready to step up.

That means we need to be defensively sound and thus Rio needs to find his form again. If Rio misses out Lescott/Upson CANNOT replace him, they're more Terry type defenders and the best bet would be Jagielka but he's gonna be struggling for fitness after his long layoff, so I'd look closely at Gary Cahill and Michael Turner. Realistically though, they don't have enough time to bed in with the squad so we need Rio back on his game if we're to have a chance.

Right back worries me, I rate Johnson very much going forward but he simply goes missing defensivley sometimes. Again though, we lack a better option. Cashley Cole is immense on the left, but Bridge is a rubbish backup - he went stale at Chelsea. Warnock's a better backup but if Baines has a season like he did last year then he should travel.

I'm interested to hear who people would play in midfield alongside Gerrard and Lampard who have to be there. For my money we'll see Barry there unless Hargreaves finds form and fitness, and the other spot will go to either pace or trickery, i.e. Walcott/Lennon or Joe Cole. Not sure who I'd pick though...

Up front I don't rate Heskey. I totally get that he can bring other players into the game and that is the reason he's played at the top level for so long with a poor scoring record. The thing is though, O'Neill is no mug and if John Carew is playing ahead of you you're past it. Carlton Cole may end up being the best replacement because I think Rooney needs more of a targetman to play off - though Defoe is our second best striker a Rooney-Defoe partnership doesn't really cut it.

I'll stop rattling on now. Needless to say, I'm so glad we're back at a major tournament, Euro2008 was a nightmare.

cheers EvertonFC

me n the kids loved seeing it again, My wife remains underwhelmed by it

of your three creative mids i'd go Joe Cole and I'd like to see Lennon in the mix too

pleased cappello seems to have got Gerrard and Lampard working effectively together

agree that Rooney and Defoe don't quite seem the ideal partnership up front

Good read EvertonFC.

I would go for Joe Cole definatly although in what formation? 4-1-3-2? However I think we should try use Ashley Young more (definatly as a super-sub) as his pace would be great although he prefers the left which would conflict with Gerrard. Along side Rooney we could have Defoe considering we have Lampard and Gerrard to feed him so would we really need a targetman? C Cole could work but he seems to get sent off abit and is injured quite often.

Also is Ferdinand's loss of form due to his injuries?wellyphoenixfan2009-11-21 19:05:58

I like Joe Cole being in the squad, but wouldn't like to see Aaron Lennon (esp after today!) or Theo Walcott dropped either. We've room for all three in a squad of 23 haven't we?

with joe cole now playing i think he will be in top form come the end of the season, he already looks like hes almost back to match fitness and awareness.

lets just hope all the england guys keep fit and in good form

oh yea and there is still owen hargreaves to come back from injury

Whatever became of the flap about Almunia playing for England?
Permalink Permalink
over 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
It was a tabloid-fuelled talk wasn't it?

Almunia is Spanish - it wouldn't be right for him to play for England even if within the rules.

That is a very nice draw (although the next round is full of difficulty - poss Germany or Oz!)
Permalink Permalink
over 16 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
looks like a very do-able task to move on from that group - one of the easier ones -or so it would seem

avoiding Germany might be a rather good idea

i suppose Harry it is time to look at the 2nd round and the permutations beyond - always a pretty wierd ...

" if- then, but if then , or if then but not if then , but if - or other if - then but - oh f**k it"  kind of process

and no doubt i'll attempt it numerous times between now and when England catch the plane back from SA

I think Ghana could come ahead of Aus... But nice easy group with only USA providing any sort of challenge.

2nd round opponent could be quite tough though.

I'd not be so dismissive of the opposition, but maybe you've watched a different England than I  have over the last 40 years

I'm happy with our group. I would rather have avoided USA - one of those teams I hate playing against in case we lose!

Group D looks nasty - any two of those four could go through and give us a tricky second round match.

Times have changed with Capello (I hope) but USA is no certain 3 points although we did beat them 2-0 at home quite recently. Algeria and Slovenia should be shouldn't provide too many problems but it is the WC...

I would hope England get 9 points and US to get 4-6 points and qualify in second.
