i wonder if Owen's mid week hat-trick changes anything in Mr Cappello's thinking?

I was thinking that too and hope he gets in. However he won't unless SAF starts him more and he continues to score however it is a good sign. Do you think he would be a better fit for Rooney then Defoe? My thinking would be it is real no difference but as they are at the same club it could be good.

To win the World Cup by whatever way is best for the team?

i was thinking more of a match by  match, situation by situation case

rather than as a overall choice for the squad

so if Rooney is guaranteed and Defoe and Agbonglahor likely

that might mean C Cole, Crouch, Heskey and Owen are fighting for one or two spots (possibly in that order of likelihood of selection)

interesting article - probably applicable to a range of situations

(both in and out of sport, not literally - i don't think keepers stalk the work places of the world distracting fear-ridden employees from their 'goals')

He is in great form at the moment for Blackburn, doing the best out of all English keepers in the EPL.

I'm completely bias of course, but I would love to see Lennon terrorizing full backs on the WC stage.

Agreed, I think an unbiased person would come to the same conclusion. That being said 5 months is a long time for him to keep up this form.

and along with beckham, all competing for the same spot. Someone's guna miss out.

Always intrigued by the Lennon-Walcott tussle. I think Lennon is really starting to come of age and may edge out Walcott.

Discuss (in a non-parochial way).

No look-in for Bent? Or has FIFA banned beach balls at the WC?

Isn't Bent the 2nd highest english goal scorer in the EPL this season?

I would take Rooney, Bent, Defoe and Crouch or Agbonglahor.

fair call re Bent - if he keeps his form

if he is to go, i'd like to see him get a bit a decent run in the squad pre-SA

Going on this season's form, Robinson has had a good season but Joe Hart is unbeatable. He will have a very strong case if he continues until the summer. I saw him when we (Chelsea) played up at Birmingham on Boxing Day and I can't remember another display like it between the sticks - absolutely awesome. I don't think he'd let us down at the World Cup.

Wayne Bridge pulls out of England squad
Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge has made himself unavailable for selection by England and will not go to the World Cup finals, he said in a statement on Thursday.

His decision comes in the wake of media allegations that John Terry, his former Chelsea team mate who is also in the England squad, had an extra-marital affair with Bridge's former girlfriend.

Bridge was a club mate of Terry's at Chelsea before joining Manchester City last year.

Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy as a result of the publicity surrounding the matter, and today, Bridge, who has played for England 36 times, said he no longer wanted to be considered for the national squad.

In the statement, issued to Sky Sports News, Bridge said: "I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting of the events over the last few weeks.

"It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

"Sadly therefore, I feel, for the sake of the team, and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection.

"I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa."

His decision leaves England coach Fabio Capello with a problem at left-back as Ashley Cole, another former Chelsea team mate, is out until May at the earliest with a broken ankle and may not be fit for the World Cup finals in South Africa which start on June 11.

Bridge and Terry are due to meet on the pitch for the first time since details of the alleged affair were made public when Manchester City visit Chelsea on Saturday.

John Terry should man up, look after his own family and resign from playing for England in the first place and this would have not happen. From a coach POV, it hard to get decent left back at international level whereas centre backs are more plentiful. John Terry has let down England and not just his teammates. I have said this before that losing captainship is not enough to resolve this issue, do they honestly think that it was enough justice for Bridge and Bridge would just simply slot back and play alongside with Terry at all??

Other players should pipe down with their views about supporting Terry. Is Bridge expected to be welcomed in the England dressing room?? Greedy and selfish thinking really from most people

I doubt that England can reach quarter final with a weaken left back in a 4-4-2 unless some new LB is playing out of his skin or there is a drastic change to the formation structure. They can still top the group but knockouts are going to be a struggle with quality Right wingers butchering that left side. Imagine coverting Dowling for defense simply to cope with speed, it would still be a nightmare as Dowling has enough extensive speed but lacks defensive ability and intensive speed. They may have to look at the younger but inexperienced players for better success.

England might need to take a leaf out of the Ricki Herbert coaching manual -

either in the winger conversion plan (troy) or 3-4-3

not sure if i can see either happening

so ...Andy Dawson ??

I think that is very well put.

I certainly am. It's very debatable that Bridge is one of our best two left-backs. Even when he was at Chelsea he was very one-dimensional, hence why Jose went for Cole. He'll always be a cult hero with us blues because of his goal at Highbury in CL, but Cole is vastly superior and there are others worthy of the chance.

I am not mourning the loss of Bridge. I think we have adequate cover in Warnock, Baines and Shorey. Possibly even Liam Ridgewell as well, who's had a great season for Birmingham. Also, Barry has played there for England before too. Kieron Gibbs at Arsenal then represents the younger brigade. Bridge was always overrated IMHO (and I used to say that when he was with us).

be interesting to see who the fringe players are in that first cut of 30

not sure about carragher's pace/mobility in the few times i've seen him play this season- but i do think his attitude would be good for the squad
