I think Fatty Frank being dropped would be no bad thing.

I'm very upbeat about beatinbg a youthful German Side...as long as it doesn't go to penalties.

We've playedthe Germans in four knockout matches (three world cup & one euro champs). Every one has gone to extra time. The last two to penalties (shudder) - both semi finals.

We shall go on to the end. We shall play in Souf Africa, we shall play on the savannah and Vuvuzellas, we shall play with growing confidence and growing strength in the air (C'mon crouchy!), we shall defend our penalty box, whatever the cost may be. We shall play on the beaches, we shall play on the wings... we shall never surrender!

Interesting stat today, England have failed to beat a top ranked side in the knockout stages of the World Cup since 1966. Certainly up against it come Monday morning.

Three for me, and two for them.

I actually would go with the octopus on this one. Guess that makes me a traitor like he is as I was born in the UK too.

Paul what a great name for an octopus.

That octopus has been living in Germany since he was a little squid.  Obviously biased.

F#ckin octopus. They should have gone for a haddock.

Born in the UK? There's a large UK contingent supporting Germany... The Scottish, Welsh and N.Irish have no reason to support us.

depending on their age a few of them will have a good (well, if not 'good' then at least historically plausible) reason not to support Germany

There is no such thing as a dream run for England; they play to the level that the opposition dictates. E.g. they struggle agianst Algeria, but then lift their game when playing Germany. Frankly the German game is just what the Engand campaign needs.

Two things from FourFourTwo's daily email:
Things you need to know today

1. Cheer up, Germany HAVE missed a penalty in a World Cup shootout

Who says the Germans are impeccable from 12 yards? They may have calmly slotted 17
of 18 spot-kicks during World Cup shootouts, but they did miss one against France in
1982 when defender Uli Stielike fluffed his lines. OK, they went on to win 5-4 and
win their other three World Cup shootouts, but they lost the 1976 European
Championship final on pens to Czechoslovakia so theres room for optimism.
Meanwhile, England proudly hold two World Cup records: most missed kicks (seven from
14 efforts) and most lost shootouts (three). Italy share both records but tarnished
their imperfect record with victory in the 2006 final. Losers.

2. James Milner will score the winner in extra-time. FACT.

1-1, 0-0, huge tactical discussion, 1-0... stat-fans will have noticed that
Englands World Cup so far bears an uncanny resemblance to the, ahem, glorious group
stages of Italia 90. So next up its Germany, standing in for 1990s Belgians (both
won two and lost one in their group, both like sausages and ale). That means the
game will end in a 1-0 victory for England, with the solitary goal volleyed home
deep into extra-time by a 24-year-old Aston Villa midfielder whos just broken into
the team.
That's my peace of mind then

Who do you think you are kidding Joachim Low?
If you think we're on the run,
We are the boys who will stop your little game.
We are the boys who will make you think again.
'Cos who do you think you are kidding Joachim Low?
If you think old England's done?

On the bright side:

1. At least it wasn't 5-1
2. It wasn't 4-0
3. No more talk about Hurst's goal in 1966

4. We now know the benefits of a youth academy

(Edit: AWs out, RoK out, England out, only Brasil left for me, unless you count Paraguay - although I'm really mostly interested in it's cell phone holders. Maybe now I can sit back and enjoy the football)

ChopperHarris going on about how f*cking great Terry was. Yes he really saved the day did'nt he? He was always massively overrated but that match really showed it.

Awful squad the worst we've had since Taylor, babyish antics by Rooney, manager that ran out of ideas before turning up, (heskey ffs),I can't believe people were saying we were going to win with this squad, just plain sh*te.

In a way I'm glad, because I can't stand most of the players, but then again the amount of money at club level these guys are paid is sickening and they don't give a f@ck.

Get rid of the lot of them I say, the under21'S would have put in a better show.

Thank god for teams like Ghana and New Zealand.

Oh great my main computer has just died.

I've supported England all my life but this lot I couldn't care less about. Terry, Lampard, Ferdinand, A Cole the A Hole, they've driven a wedge between me and the team and It's clear I'm not the only one. A clear out of the squad is needed, starting with these 4 assholes.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Thatll be the last game of the tournament for the Uruguayan officials. Overall, cant complain that we lost. The Germans were better than us and we havent reproduced anywhere near our qualification form in the Finals. The squad disruption from all the injuries hasnt helped but doesnt tell the whole story. WTF is going on with the squad? Was the pressure too much for them? They looked tired, as did other Premier League players in the other squads. Perhaps the domestic game needs to ask itself how good it is that we play so many more games than the rest of the world. When we scored our second, before the roar of the crowd woke up the linesman who failed to realise hed missed a goal and didnt signal to the ref, I thought it was a brilliant opportunity. To come back from 2-0 down and level it up against a young team would give us a psychological edge we might exploit, albeit that Low would no doubt have executed some half time damage repair. Instead, Germany showed more resolve and we were forced to commit more and more forward. Both the second half German goals were on the break when we had nine men forward. We might still have lost, indeed would have remained the favourites to still lose, but that second goal being given would have made for a great contest.

Yes I was gutted when it was disallowed but they were p@ssing on us anyway.

Sorry but you are deluded, this whole crap that we play millions of games more than anyone else is rubbish and I  liked Gordon Banks comment that they played the same amount of football matches, the difference being they gave a sh*t in 1966. This squad like the French just don't give a sh*t and are too old.

Ryan Nelsen for example was sick for that last match and his performance was titianic!!!

This world cup hs showed everyone that the stupidly huge wages paid actually don't improve the football.

We need an enquiry like France, ffs our new primeminister just f**ked it up with his "at least it never went to penalties" commentshows that a shakeup is not coming. Everything is wrong with our game.

Surprised no one has mentioned the archaic formation Capello persists on sticking with. Seriously, can anyone name me a top side in world football that still operates under a rigid 4-4-2 system with a target man? Yeah, thought so.

Three for me, and two for them.

geez that game royally fuvked me off

had the second goal counted who knows what would have happened, could relly have messed with germany letting a 2 goal lead slip, and would have done wonders for us coming from 2 behind, instead it just deflated us.

at least i can start sleeping a bit better, tend to lose interest after england are gone. hard to decide who i want to lose more, germany or argentina
