Might as well start a thread, we appear to be looking good, (the chance to see them play more often would be nice ). Destroying Croatia a good result.

Come on England!

No need to be looking ahead to the World Cup this far out.

Just make sure you beat Ukraine next month.

This is the English football forum, we beat Croatia soundly, thought there might be other English people interested in our teams performance in preparation of the world cup.

Any other fellow Englishmen not that bothered about losing this morning? Sorry, El G but Ukraine pipping Croatia to the playoff spot doesn't upset me at all! More concerned that Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole could make such stupid mistakes. Oh well, hopefully this will dampen any over confidence and be better for us in the long run.

So not bothered, at 1-0 down I decided sleep was more important than watching the game

only saw bits of it, too blown away by Aw's to muster interest in a dead game

likewise , i think the loss might stop some of the medai hype (for a week it'll probably be all gloom n disaster )

edit - only other downside i was  just wondering  about  - is it poosible that 1 result (i.e. that one) could effect the seeding for England

The more reason to give Gary Cahill that starting nod

Typical idiotic English response to that - "don't care". If England had won that match the trumpets would be blowing about how awesome they were for winning. You only don't care because you lost. If you had won 5-0 you would care alright.

Typical English. What English people have you been hanging out with? None that I've ever met.

I never said I don't care. I said not too bothered. Of course I care. Don't put your own false words in other mouths and then try and have a go at those false words! Duh!

We're not too bothered for one reason and one reason only: we've already qualified. Otherwise it would be the usual emotional torment. If we'd won 5-0, I'd be well happy at thrashing a reasonably good team away from home, but ultimately it's not a big deal. And the hopeful upside, as I said, was this should stop any over confidence and force the boys to retain focus for when we re-commence competitive fixtures.

Typical idiotic English response? Don't be an idiot!

It won't directly impact on the seeding for the Finals. Seeding usually uses a mix of the previous two Finals (used to be previous three, but not of late) not the qualifiers, combined with rankings. So the only potential concern there is whether this would hurt our rankings.

The seeding for the next qualifying, assuming the usual method is used, could suffer slightly - they usually use the points co-efficient (i.e. average points per game) for the previous couple of qualifying campaigns.

Overall, one defeat shouldn't be an issue - unless we wanted to catch Spain in the seedings. We should stay in the top batch for Euro 12 qualifiers.

For the WC10 final draw, it will be a but touch and go for us. I haven't sat down and repeated the calc using the 06 formula (yet), but we're normally around the cusp of a number one seeding. As repeat Quarter Finalists, we should hopefully manage a top 8 seeding but it's by no means guaranteed.

Ok, I was being a bit of an idiot, but I stand by the point. If you had won 5-0, the first response wouldn't have been "Any other fellow Englishmen not that bothered".

And that quote basically does say that you don't care. Even though I was drunk in my previous post and misquoted. I must've paraphrased what I interpreted your words as. Not bothered isn't that different from don't care. Don't want to argue the semantics of that though!

Anyway, sorry for being a bit of an idiot. The game didn't matter - you guys had already qualified. I look forward to watching your games in the World Cup (I like watching England lose).

Well of course not, what's your point?

Let me put it another way:
- say the Phoenix are playing a match in which the result means nothing i.e. a pre-season cup match (when it still existed)
- we lose 1-0 - hey ho, not that big a deal just the pre-season cup.
- we win 1-0 - cool, we won but not that big a deal just the pre-season cup.
- we win 5-0 - wow. we just won 5-0! Fantastic...

Why would us English be any different? A 5-0 win gets excitement - unless you're playing Andorra or something. A narrow loss (or win) in a meaningless game does not and so you look for the upside.

What reaction were you looking for exactly - calls for Capello's head?

Fairly divided.

People on one side (like me) thinking it's ll our fault anyway for only getting 2 points from 4 games against the main rivals.

And then others who are in paranoid hysterical fits believing England lost mainly to screw us over. But they seem to be a vocal minority.

I personally didn't expect England would lose (mainly because I don't really rate Ukraine, expect them to get disposed of quite comfortably in the playoffs), but considering the nature of the game (do or die for them with you already qualified) plus the early sending off, I guess the final outcome is not overly surprising.

Probably.

Extremely unlikely to stay on as national manager.

I think having Eduardo out for most of the campaign hurt badly. he seems really prolific in his Croatia shirt.

Of course it did. As did Modric's injusry in the second half of the campaign, and the fact we had on-going injury problems with other player throughout (Kranjcar, Kovac, Pletikosa,Olic, Petric) meant we were not able to put our best 11 once on the park during the entire campaign.

But we were still in a position to qualify, and blew it against Ukraine twice (0-0, 2-2) when both games should have been comfortable wins.

Time to lift this thread from the ashes like the Phoenix.

Squad is out, not bad, I would have taken Ashley Cole though.

Sadly for some you gotta be in it to win it.

It's not a bad squad this time but no I don't think we'll win it but they should get through the group stages.

Not sure about the Man U back ups or including Lampard and if we need to defend not having Cole there and I reckon Hodgson has had to lower the age of the squad due to everyone rightly saying so.

Mind you this season I've seen so little Premiership football that I'm not up to speed really.

I like the looks of the squad but think its about 12 moths to early for a few players (Barkley in particular). Not that confident of anything more than last 16. 1/4 finals would have to be the aim and semis a minor miracle. But we all know that on their day any team at the World Cup can be unbeatable and any team can have an off day. Who knows, stranger things have happened (Greece winning the Euros, South Korea making the semis)

Straws well and truely being clutched :-)

Its no longer a problem.

think cole should be there, maybe not starting but his experience would be vital.

Germany did it last time, youthful squad over achieving... here's hoping with England!

The Germans did have some quality coming through though... the likes of Ozil and Muller

tough group, Uruguay, Costa Rica, , Italy and England
