NZ up four places to 77! And it looks like both England and Argentina are out of the top 7. So does this completely change the look of Pot A?

From FIFA.

Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup note to media
The detailed criteria to determine the seeded teams for the Final Draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa will be confirmed at the next meeting of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup in Cape Town on 2 December 2009 (and announced at a press conference following the meeting).

If the criteria to determine the seeded teams were to include, as in the past, the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, then it would be the October 2009 edition of this ranking which would be considered, and this for sporting reasons. In fact, using the November 2009 edition would create an uneven situation, specifically for the European Zone, where the play-offs involving the eight best runners-up led to an imbalance in the number of qualification matches played between the teams (i.e. some teams play more games than others).

That's a bit weird. Sure, there's some imbalance within Europe because they had playoff games. But what about for other Confederations where they don't have as many 'competitive games' to get ranking points before the World Cup?! How the heck is it fair for Africa if their final qualifying group games aren't even included in the rankings!? Ok, that's not going to make a difference in this World Cup, but it could in the future.

For what it's worth, I put the November rankings into the seedings calc to replace the October ones to see if it made a difference.

The same teams are seeded, though the running order changes as France and Argentina swap places - not that their sequence is relevant.

Good  article from the herald.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10610659

The formula for the finals draw, to be made in Cape Town on December 4, affects the chances for many sides. It will be decided on just two days before the draw, Fifa has announced.

One of the primary aims, under Fifa's rules, is to keep teams from the same confederation apart. Europe's strength prevents that but the system will limit the number of European teams in any group to two.

I don't know why FIFA insist on announcing these things so late. Most of the time, they then just follow the previous tournament - so the announcement is a bit of an anti-climax, which doesn't stop people with short memories crying foul.

In 2006, they tweaked the approach and stopped including the previous three World Cups, so the potential is there for them to make a change. They have gradually made the rankings a more important factor, so it wouldn't surprise me if they continue doing that - though I think the balance is about right now and reducing the previous WC weightings would be a bad move.

Still, it used to be a selection by the organising committee back in the 30s. In 1950, they let Brazil - the hosts - recommend seedings! In 54, the committee did a secret ballot instead. In 1962, they decided to just seed all the hosting confederation teams. Then it was back to the committee for a bit before hey finally hit upon using an objective formula - I'm not sure exactly which was the first, but it was definitely in use by 1990.

1970 was the first in which they adopted a separate pots approach to keep regional teams apart.

You know my thoughts on Fifa and them  making announcements on the hoof. They leave themselves open to skeptics like me every time. Transparency is absolutely critical.

That or I'd like to see him start an all-out brawl.

South African actress Charlize Theron has landed the leading lady's role in Saturday's draw (NZT) for next year's World Cup finals in her home country, FIFA announced on Wednesday.

Theron will be joint host of the 90-minute show to be televised live to an estimated global audience of more than two hundred million people in 200 countries at 1900 local time (0600 on Saturday morning).

She will join FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke to host the procedure of placing the 32 finalists into eight groups of four teams for the tournament which runs from June 11 to July 11.

The show will include an African musical spectacular, including gospel and jazz.

A host of sporting celebrities will also take part in the draw including Ethiopia's Olympic champion runner Haile Gebrselassie, England midfielder David Beckham, South Africa footballer Matthew Booth and cricketer Makhaya Ntini and the host country's rugby World Cup captain John Smit.

South African president Jacob Zuma will be in the audience along with Nobel Peace prize winners Frederik de Klerk and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

FIFA will announce which teams will be seeded for the draw at a news conference on Thursday.

As a marathon runner, that name got my attention more. To just call him Ethiopia's Olympic Champion is a bit belittling - he's the fastest marathon runner of all time, the only man to ever break 2:04 and one of only five (IIRC) to ever break 2:05 (which he's done three times). The man is a machine!

Uruguay                                                  Greece
Paraguay                                                 Serbia
Chile                                                        Switzerland
Important rules regarding the draw:
hosts South Africa will be automatically positioned as A1; the other seeded teams will be drawn into the other groups B-H, but will always be in position 1 of their group

groups will be drawn from A to H and the positions in the group will be drawn for Pots 2 to 4

geographical criteria will also be respected, meaning that no two teams from the same confederation will be drawn in the same group (except European teams, where a maximum of two will be in a group). For example, South Africa cannot play the African teams from Pot 3 and Argentina and Brazil cannot be drawn against the three remaining South American teams.

So FIFA have gone with getting rid of the previous WC element of the seeding altogether now. El G said a while back that he'd heard that as a rumour.

The only difference it has made is that France lost seeding.

Interesting.... personally, I think it's a mistake. Prior couple of WCs should, IMO, have a factor in the seeding.

Anyone think this has been done as an underhand way of punishing France? If we go back to the usual method in 2014, we can assume yes!

Magdalena Schoeman's status as Miss World New Zealand gets her into this weekend's World Cup draw in Cape Town where contestants join A-list celebrities Charlize Theron and David Beckham on football's red carpet.

The 112 Miss World contestants are among a crowd of around 3000 who will attend the draw at the Cape Town International Convention Centre where the 32 qualified teams will be split into eight groups of four for next year's tournament.

For Schoeman it's a return home as she was born in South Africa, moving to New Zealand in 1997 where her family settled in Christchurch.

The 19-year-old beauty therapist has been back in the republic for two weeks leading up to her own final in Johannesburg on December 12.

Contestants have already visited World Cup construction sites but they will be more in their own league at the glitzy draw where they will mix with the stars.

While Fifa remain tight-lipped about the guest list South African media have begun speculating with Theron among their certainties.

Theron won 2004 best actress for her serial killer role in Monster and gained a nomination the following year.

The Sunday Times reported sports stars likely to line the 65m red carpet are Springboks rugby captain John Smit, Ethiopian champion marathon runner Haile Gebrselassie and retired footballing greats Zinedine Zidane and Lionel Messi.

David Beckham has confirmed his attendance as he helps front England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Most of the coaches and captains of the qualified teams will be in attendance, perhaps even French skipper Thierry Henry who has been caught up in cheating claims following his team's controversial qualifying win over Ireland that included his hand ball in the leadup to the deciding goal.

There are suggestions that controversial Argentina coach, Diego Maradona - under a Fifa ban after his foul-mouthed tirade following his side's qualification for the finals - is planning to front up.

New Zealand officials at the draw will be NZF chairman Frank van Hattum, high performance manager Alex Chiet and All Whites assistant coach Brian Turner.

Agree with this. But the trend for FIFA over the past years has been to try to give more importance to their ranking system, so guess this is just a continuation of that.

South Africa cannot play the African teams from Pot 3 and Argentina and Brazil cannot be drawn against the three remaining South American teams.

"How the heck does this work???"

It doesnt make sense, South Africa will b in pot 1, then they will draw teams out of 2,3,4??? to Play them?

Easy. South Africa has to get one of the South American teams from pot 3, Brazil and Argentina have to get one of the African teams from pot 3.

It's standard practice that teams from the same confederations (bar UEFA, because of the sheer number of European teams in the World Cup) can't be in the same group.
