Nice story.

Good luck to the lad.

Any idea on position etc etc.

Seems to be a few youngsters moving abroad at the moment.

So if he turns out to be a top player, will he play for Sudan, Ethiopia or New Zealand?

Grr these articles EVERYTIME nothing about what position they play. Seriously every story on youth player fails to ever mention

Wow! Sporting Braga are one of the biggest clubs in Portugal - so fantastic news for the lad.(Champions League group stage last season, Europa League runners-up 2011). Manager of the first team, Jesulado Ferreira was Kosta Barbarouses's manager at Panathinaikos last season.

Already listed on Braga's official website in their u-19 squad: http://www.scbraga.pt/futebol-en/formacao/juniores

U19 Youth Team Squad 2013/2014

Birhanu Adane Taye MID

He's been there a couple of months now.

Midfielder/ striker for Team Wellington in last summer's ASB Youth League - their second highest scorer ( 4 goals in 7 matches):

http://www.sportingpulse.com/team_info.cgi?c=1-4499-124594-201218-16660562&a=STATS

Then went back to Christchurch club FC Twenty 11 in the Mainland League, then on to Portugal in June.

He's a mate of Bill Tuiloma from their time together at APFA and a big Arsenal fan.

He's a regular on Twitter: https://twitter.com/BeeBirhanu2

Cheers Big Pete,

If he has been there for a while, has he played any games yet?

Can't find any details of Sporting Braga u-19 on the club website or elsewhere except scores and a table:
Braga second in the country's top u-19 league the "Portugal Champions NACIONAL Juniores A 1 Divisao Norte"
Won their last two games 5-1, wins: 4 draws: 4 from 8 games

I know a bit about Birhanu as I know Patricia Dimairho (mentioned in the article as taking him under her wing) very well.  Birhanu was very good friends with Patricia's son Tam (who's recently signed up with the Phoenix FSE).  They were at St Pat's Town and then APFA together.  There's quite a bit on his background in the article in the opening post.  What else do you want to know?

Just if you hear how his games are going and how he's progressing.

Been told he's only just received his international clearance, enabling him to play.  He's played one game at central midfield.  I assume that's for their U19 youth team, as that's where he's listed on their site:

From Stuff website

No update really, but does reveal he's keen to play for the All Whites. One known error in this article - he didn't play his club football for Coastal Spirit, FC20 I believe.

maybe its a mix up due to FC20 only being created after the earthquake, so he may have played more club footy for Coastal.

I was just thinking due to his age and all. I've had some school mates switch to coastal for tournaments etc then go back to their normal or school clubs. again, its only an assumption on why the article got it wrong, I don't really know anything other than that.

Birhanu's story  featured on "Seven Sharp" last week as an a example of a refugee footballer making good.

Part of a story on an ethnic football tournament in Wellington and immigrant football talent.

Anyone know what this kid is up to. Heard his Sporting Braga youth team had won whatever league or cup they play in; but then heard he was back training in nz recently. Was he on a 1 year deal? Did Braga not offer him a renewal?

Supposedly has a trial with doncaster rovers within the next few weeks as he was too old for the youth academy and they didn't offer him a first team contract.

As mentioned in the Junior All Whites thread, he played a few matches for them in early September in Qatar. Seems he has been playing in the Under-21 team for FC Slovan Liberec in Czech Republic since late September. He's listed in the team on their website a few times - first one here:

Liberec vs Bohemians 1905

Seems to be mentioned in this report if anyone can translate it:

Birhanu Taye has some quite extensive footage of himself playing for Sporting Braga's u-20's in Portugal last season and for NZ u-20's in the Panda Cup last year vs. China, Brazil and Croatia on his You Tube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCitAx171p5f4KxNgw...

Plays right wing back and gets a lot of good crosses in.

I have to agree with the footage - attacking right back - and holding mid for the U20's - seems to put some great passes in that the players around him don't seem to make the most of. I can only assume he let in a few goals for Birhanu to be let go?
