late bid also made by Sheffield Wednesday apparently as well, could be a bit of a bidding war......

Wolves fans seem very excited about getting Wood. They are one of the biggest clubs in the Championship and are paying $6 for promotion. Seems like a good move for Wood.

hate the attitude on www.stuff.co.nz , big photo of chris wood with 'dumped' written across the top ...... with wolves, wigan and Sheffield Wednesday all appearing to be lining up strong offers that is a pretty stupid way to look at things + it hasn't gone though yet, just one sky commentator jumping the gun...LCFC need to sign a replacement before he definitely moves on.

Pity he's not getting a decent crack in the EPL to show what he can/can't do, but he never seemed to click at Leicester.

The good news is he'd be a regular starter at Wolves and the coach knows what he's buying having had Chris play for him at Millwall where he was very prolific.

All that's needed now is for Wolves to go up, and Leicester to go down at the end of the season.

Now he can go there, score a bunch of goals in his first handful of appearances, get shifted down the pecking order and then move to a different championship club.

The thing with Chris is that the only time he has been prolific in his career is under Jackett at Millwall. Everwhere else, his record has not really screamed 'I deserve a shot in the EPL'.

Looking at his UK stats, he is 164 games, 45 goals. If that were an HAL season, thats 7.5 goals (and there would be a few subs appearances in that as well). In the past, we have been unhappy with our strikers that have only put in 7-8 goals in a season - look at Stein whom averaged 8... Tim Brown was about 5.5....

I think he is at the level he as at as much as I bloody wish he got a shot.

Yeah, did they not just get promoted back to the Championship?

Is an interesting article about the financial position of the championship clubs. Bolton has the highest turnover and wage bill but they are also making huge losses. Wolves have the second highest turnover and 4th highest wage bill. Some of the income is associated with parachute payments which have presumably stopped now? But not a bad team to join in terms of promotion prospects.

They had an average attendance of 20,000 last season in League One and have a stadium capacity of over 30,000. If they can average 25,000 they would probably have the 4th or 5th highest average of a Championship club. That doesn't mean Wolves will do well but it does mean they have the potential to do well.

The way I see it is that Wood's level is currently the Championship but could very well be the Premier League in two or three seasons. Therefore it is a good idea to go to a club which is unlikely to be in the Premier League next year e.g. Cardiff and Wigan. At the same you don't want to go to a small club like Brentford or Blackpool. Wolves were in the Premier League only a few seasons ago and have been in theifrst division for a good part of their history.

This is true but if Wood was playing in the A-League he would be starting every game. Javier Hernandez used to have the most goals per minutes played in the Premier League ever but he has only scored 37 times in 101 league games.

I think if Wood started every game he would score at a decent rate. The fact he wasn't starting much for a club seeking promotion is probably more indicative than his actual goal stats.

Yeah that's a valid point Ryan which is why I put in that a fair few of those appearances would be as a sub. I am not sure where to find minutes played but would be interesting to average those total minutes out over 90/game and see his goal rate then (much like Hernandez)

this is definitely significant point. At both west brom and leicester he came off the bench a lot, and As a real youngster at west from.

A shame i think he could well in EPL. Some tall poppies on here would say no tho

I feel for the guy. May be in the future his agent should try for a contract in Germany...who knows

Why would anyone on here have tall poppy syndrome? I think we all want Chris Wood to do well. What are we doing on this forum, in this section, if we really wish ill upon New Zealand football players.

Thinking Wood isn't ready isn't tall poppy syndrome; it is just some people's opinions drawn from the evidence in front of us. As always, we could well be wrong.

You'll find his total minutes per season here (as well as other stats such as starts and sub apps):

http://int.soccerway.com/players/chris-woods/76918...

You can do the maths though!

To be fair, Chris had a high goals-to-game ratio in the 2012-13  season scoring 20 goals in 41 games including the mighty Millwall half season (11 goals in the first 19 games of the season before signing for Leicester halfway through) , he went on to score nine goals in 22 apps (21 starts) for Leicester in the remainder of 2012-13

He scored nine for Birmingham in 2011-12 from 22 apps (13 starts)

Chris has only played five seasons where he's had a decent number of games: 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14

44 goals in 102 starts ain't too bad.

And at age 22 it's early days yet...could have another 12 seasons ahead of him.

Also bear in mind he is not exactly an Ian Rush. He is a big lump of a lad, who warrants a bit of attention from defenders and has had some useful striking partnerships where others have fed of him. I think he does have potential at some point to play for a mid/bottom team in the premiership. Not this year it appears but another year of knocking them in the championship will not hurt him. It's very interesting seeing that post a little while ago about the championship wage bill. Based solely upon those figures this league is probably the 6th strongest in western Europe.

Yeah when you compress it down to a per 90 min basis, the figures are different

League 103 games 44 goals 2.35 games a goal

League and cups 114 games 55 goals 2.07 games a goal

League Cup and country 137 games 68 goals 2.01 games a goal

That's actually better than I thought and better than his stats suggest (but I guess if that was done for every player then the same would be true in a few cases). I guess the key is if a club play him as a 90min striker across a season, will he deliver? There is only one way to find out. That equates to about 20 odd goals a game and puts him up their in the goal scoring stakes on the table looking at last year.

I think you mean games per goal don't you, not the other way around?

Those stats are very decent. Wont find to many 22 year olds with those stats in the Championship. Chris has way more potential than any of the other strikers but I guess its what they need now massive loss of $ to go back to the championship. Also throw in 28 assists for club and country which is very good as well.

On the bright side... under 24 means that some clubs in Hamilton will get a nice little check in the mail.

Maybe Waikato FC will be able to finish mid table this season.

I do wonder how Wanderers have done out of Chris.  He must have brought a few $$$/£££ to the club.

looks like skysports are being fed 'agent bait' to raise his price, the wolves forum has suddenly turned sour and many think they won't get him in the coming bidding war. Derby are favourites for promotion with the pundits right now......a better choice if there is any truth to all of this.

Thats one of the things that has always fascinated me. The club may want to sell the player but the player has to agree to terms with the next club or why leave?

Grumpy old bastard alert

easy to see players as the club's property to sell but you are totally right, Chris has two years on his contract at lcfc and if he doesn't want to go and he sits in the reserves for two years twiddling his thumbs that is totally up to him - he won't be drinking Tesco's cider outside the job centre building if he stays.

He has been so vocal about his EPL dream I would actually put money on him staying now, whether Pearson likes it or not.

Leicester could always drop the transfer fee and let Wood end up with a better deal. We don't really know if they failed to come to terms because Wood is clinging to the EPL or because he was offered a worse deal. He was reportedly offered quite a bit by Leicester at the time so its unlikely Wolves can offer as much.

Could be. A higher transfer fee but lower wages doesn't do much for a player now does it.

well this makes stuff.co.nz and their 'dumped' headline look pretty stupid, because he ain't going to wolves

20 odd goals a game and he'd be worth a staggering amount.
