Was captain for the day as well seriously no excuse for him not having played under Hudson I get he needed to miss the Oman clash though but still Sweden is a quality league I would rate it above the A league he is 28 and at his peak right now I get we have midfield depth but he can play DM CM and and AM its just crazy to be leaving him out for ASB players.

I want a journo to ask Hudson this directly.  And not accept an answer like he hasn't been selected for "football reasons".

Um, is he eligible? Not born in NZ and hasn't spent 5 years after the age of 18 here.

Anyone know where his parents are from?

He played in world cup qualifiers before that rule was in place, surely it only applies to non current internationals?

I thought it was only if anyone noticed and appealed? After all, Wynne played at the U20 WC and no one challenged his eligibility but it turns out he wasn't actually eligible.

His dad is British. Don't know about his mum, but it doesn't matter: As I posted earlier in this thread: He played for U20s in 2007 WC when he was eligible before the "5 years after turning 18" regulation was introduced so yes he's still eligible.

Sweet, cheers.

Hudson is just clinging to the idea that he has a distinctive style and kids who've played a couple of games for him are going to fit better than seasoned professionals? Even that doesn't make sense because he brought VDB in to play CM at one stage.

They offered him a new contract but he wasn't happy with it. Says he has some offers from other clubs and is leaving it to his agent: http://www.expressen.se/gt/sport/han-skot-klubben-kvar-i-allsvenskan--lamnar/

Falkenburg are the smallest club in the Swedish top flight with a very small budget I'd imagine.

Their ground only holds 5500

He can make more money elsewhere in the league.

Just signed with GAIS (Gothenburg) in the Swedish Superettan (2nd division)

The level is a little disappointing.

Maybe Hudson is right, if he isn't worth a gig in the Swedish top flight then he probably isn't worth preserving with

What a disappointing move......maybe GAIS are a loadsamoney club that have thrown a shark ton of krona at him, cause surely he could have landed a gig at a top level club there?

They finished 5th (top tier) in 2011, it's a good team with lot of history and a bad present

He turned down a contract to stay at Falkenburg didn't he? And they're still Div 1

Dan should have an interesting time at GAIS who are the St Pauli of Swedish football - like FC St. Pauli in Hamburg, GAIS tend to go up and down between the top two divisions and have a support base amongst the left-wing and alternative (punk/ anarchist) population.

GAIS:

"The club thus gained the reputation of being a yo-yo club, constantly going up and down through the league system. After their promotion in 2005 the club played seven straight seasons in Allsvenskan which was a feat not achieved since the degradation in 1955. After relegation in 2012 they finished seventh in Superettan in 2013 and has remained there since..."

A chart showing the progress of GAIS through the swedish football league system. The different shades of gray represent league divisions.

Modern day GAIS supporters.

"Their supporters have traditionally been perceived as coming from the working class-districts of Gothenburg and having left wing sympathies.".

GAIS have been using the Swedish Cup tournament to trial players and don't seem to be worrying about the results.

They've lost them all and conceded lots of goals.

In Sweden the Cup is played initially as a pre-season tournament with teams in groups somewhat like the UEFA Champions League.

The knock-out rounds come later in the season.

So far, Daniel Keat's GAIS career consists of 60 minutes in only one Cup game against Helsingborg from the top flight:

Has had a horrible run of injuries just like Henderson.  Is there something in that Scandinavian water?

I think you're thinking of Havelock North?

Keat's season has come to an end and it'll be one to forget as he was frequently injured and/or didn't feature in the matchday squad. He made 2 league appearances in July and August when he played 127 minutes. The last match of the season was on 24 October when again he wasn't named at all.

Good effort Jaume with all those player wraps.

I imagine there would be problems sorting out insurance etc - but be great to see these Scandinavian based players like Keat, James, Old, Nikko Boxall & Henderson - play a few games in the SSP over long Scandy winter.

I note the Swedish 2nd division for example doesn't start again until February 2017.   If a guy like Keat is short on match fitness, wouldn't a playing stint in the NZ summer help his rehab?

Also gives NZ football fans and Mr Hudson a chance to see his ability up close.

up to SS teams to approach the players perhaps?

Well if some of guys playing in Scandinavia feel like they are being unfairly ignored by Hudson (as James has alluded to in some tweets??) then they should be on the front foot trying to broker, some sort of short playing stint in SSP.

Again I imagine sorting out insurance against injury, to keep their various Scandy clubs happy would be the major stumbling block.

Still Musa's USL club St Louis let him play for Team Wellington last summer (not sure about this SSP season), once St Louis's season was over.

There has to be some major reason why many of them aren't coming back and playing dual seasons like Musa did....Playing 11 months of the year and missing preseasons isnt a bad way to do it!

Why risk your lively hood to play in an amatuer league as a pro?

Permalink Permalink

Or your livelihood even.

Not saying it's easy to organize - given yes their employers (professional clubs) would most likely require some potentially costly insurance cover in place (if they were agreeable to the idea at all).

Still as a player you get to escape a pre-season that I imagine is mostly indoors gym based in a harsh Scandy winter, actually play rather than train, catch up with family & friends, spend some time throwing a frisbee rather than a snowball, potentially catch the eye of coach Hudson - and who knows for those now off contract (hasn't James contract with his Finnish club finished?) - maybe even prick interest of coach Merrick (long shot I understand).

Just raising the idea - though acknowledge is probably in the toooo hard basket.

What next for him? He has played in the USA (where Kiwis appear to be the flavor of the month of late) and in Scandinavia where he possibly has connections.

Or is a return down-under on the cards? I've always like him, from his day at TW many years ago.
