The point I think allows Portland to go 8th on GD from Vancouver (who lost today).
So Timbers to host Whitecaps midweek in 8th v 9th wildcard game.
MLS website still says Vancouver in 8th and Portland 9th, but the Whitecaps announced before today that their stadium would be unavailable to host the Play-In match so either way Portland get to host it
Not sure if these are visible in NZ, but the challenge is the first bit of the highlights.
Decent praise from the gaffer.

A little bit of pressure off in that Whitecaps couldn't have hosted the play-in game even if they had finished ahead, which meant hosting rights would have been ceded to the opposition. They had a pre-scheduled event at BC Place which meant it wasn't available for the Whitecaps - one of the downsides of sharing a stadium with many other events.

This likely influenced Neville’s thinking in giving Surman a start or not
If Portland beat Vancouver in the 8th v 9th wildcard game, they will play Western Conference winners LAFC over 3 rounds in the next playoff phase. LAFC's owner last week bought into Auckland FC.

What an @MLS debut for Finn Surman 👏#RCTID pic.twitter.com/iIrgfObY23
The 3 North Pacific Coast MLS teams actually play for their own little trophy (Cascadia Cup) over the season. Vancouver, Seattle & Portland. After yesterday's draw Timbers become this season's Cascadia Cup winners on countback.

You'd think it is back to the pine for Surman.

Living in the U.S for the first time, what norms has Timbers CB Finn Surman had to get used to?

Absolute shellacking at home. Scottish internationals Armstrong (1) & Gauld (3) with 4 goals between them for Vancouver.
Season over for Portland, but yeah Surman must be in the running to be a starting CB in 2025, based on this result.
But Canadian international Kamal Miller came on, ahead of Surman.
I guess we will get some news Feb-March next year in pre season, where Finn S likely is in the CB rankings at the Timbers.
At least he will get some AWs matches in Novemeber.

Guaranteed compensation for Kiwis who are currently under contract with MLS clubs.
Michael Boxall - $728,097
Bill Tuiloma - $484,938
Finn Surman - $202,183
Figures in USD. https://t.co/NqFOEU1icS
Will feel less so yes, when you are earning actual green backs, and presumably they set him up with accommodation and a car.
Tuiloma still on good coin (about $NZD800K) for getting splinters.

Thanks for doing my work for me RR. I'm getting lazy. 😅
If I've worked out the taxes right as well he's still taking home circa $130-140k in the hand. That's more than enough to get by over there quite comfortably. Beautiful part of the country too.
Perhaps Boxy can be his professor in the next AWs camp. He's been playing with Latinos for years now in the MLS.

The way Neville was speaking at season end he'll likely be at worst 3rd choice CB, and maybe even starting next MLS season. Bit of cleanout at Portland perhaps.

Makes sense if they paid a fee to land him.
Noticed that a couple of the Aussie lads in Girdwood-Reich and Bovalina were both listed as unprotected by their respective club sides. Not that it came to much in the end in that Expansion draft.

Beware of correlation vs. causation and all of that, but, y’know. 5-0. I’m not sure he’s in line to start from first kick this year, but it’s hard to imagine bringing back the exact same group that shipped 56 regular-season goals last year, and then lost that nickel at home in the playoffs. Changes will eventually be made.”
