Jake Gleeson signs for new MLS team the Portland Timbers who will be introduced into the league next season. He will play for the U23 team this year, I am very happy about this, we need more goal keepers playing overseas.

Jacob arrived in Portland a couple of days ago. Apparently broke his little finger after the first shot in his first training session. Should be alright.

Portland being in the MLS is good for us as Gavin Wilkinson is the coach/manager? there so hopefully might open some doors for players to pick up contracts.

What happened with his training/ trial for 6 weeks or months which everone it was at Manchester United?

He went over and trialled, did extremely well, trained with 1st team and everything, then unfortunately came down with a severe stomach bug the last week or so of the trial. Was recommended to a number of top level clubs in England but unfortunately his lack of an English/European Union passport greatly hindered his ability to be signed.

That's alright though.  Has more chance of playing at Portland and can then hopefully do a Nelsen/Elliot.

They've got plenty of kiwi history.  Gavin Wilkinson the coach is a former All White and played there before taking over the side.  Also Cameron Knowles, Benjamin Totori, Bryan Little have all spent time there.

There's some more older history as well, but I can't remember it right now.

If some people's calculations are correct about NZ now being inside to top 50, now would be a great time to try his luck in Europe, although staying will hopefully see him play at MLS level.

Near future AW?

He's only been with the Timbers for a month or so, doubt they're going to let himn walk out straight away.

He's the best young keeper I've seen in NZ currently (and by young I mean younger than Mossy) - sorry Radioman, lastnomad, DKP22)

Former All White Aaron Lines from Christchurch also finished his career there a couple of years ago. He went there from the Polish First Division. Aaron now coaching a top women's side over there. His mum used to work at my local Post Office here in Christchurch and filled me in on Aaron's exploits around the globe...
NZ band the Mint Chicks also based in Portland, Oregon these days. God, I think another Kiwi band have just moved there too.
Is a VERY hip place culturally- a mecca of alternative music etc., and lots of forests, lakes and mountains like NZ. Oregon is one of the smallest US states.

The following day, forward Brian Ramsey scored the games only goal while goalkeeper Jake Gleeson recorded his eight shutout of the season as the U-23 team beat the Pumas 1 to 0.

Excellent that Jake has worked out so well.

My bro is based in the US in the Pacific North West and is matey with Gavin Wilkinson. When in NZ late last year (Nov 14 - that was lucky!) he was on a spying mission to check out young Mr Gleeson and reported back positively, so really good to hear.

Augurs well. All the best.

I know, I know, its serious!

Excellent job for jake gleeson who won USL Premier Development League with Portland Timbers U23 and hopefully he will earn a spot with Portland in the MLS next season as a 2nd or 3rd goalkeeper.

Rumour mills are doing its rounds ...Full MLS contract could be in the mix.....

EK: With Cronin being signed, it seems like hes our starting goalkeeper for MLS. Is that true?

KK: I would put him at the top of our list for now, but I think the number one keeper job is entirely up for grabs. The team is intrigued with Adin Brown, and if he can regain his form and stay healthy, he might be in the mix. The status of U-23 goalkeeper Jake Gleeson is something else to consider, because hes probably the most talented keeper on the team right now but hes only 20 years old. There is also potential talent that will be available in the MLS expansion draft where they might find a reserve keeper from an existing MLS club. Regardless, its one of our more secure positions with the talent available.

Can someone change the name of this thread to Jake Gleeson. When I made it I was somehow confused with him and Spoonley.

you can change it without the mods help, just edit your first post you created for it and edit the title.
