Starting as HB Køge (7th) host Vendsyssel (8th). First game of the Relegation Round (bottom six).

HB Køge are 7 points above bottom 2 teams, so should be safe from relegation. Hopefully they can confirm that safety well before final game 28th May, so agreeing to release Stamenic 1-2 club games early to go into camp with the AWs.

Interesting that Costa Rican Bryan Oviedo is at Stamenic's parent club FC Copenhagen. However Oviedo hasn't played 1 Superliga game this season, though did play for the Ticos in the March window. So maybe not long back from injury??

3-0 win for HB Køge (7th) over Vendsyssel. Stamenic comes off at 90 mins, and his replacement gets the 3rd goal 2 mins later.

Oviedo just isn't good enough for the club tbh

Stamenic starting as HB Køge (7th) travel to Jammerbugt (12th & last)

Edit - subbed off at 80 mins (score 2-0) in a 3-0 win. Jammerbugt down to 10 men from 45 mins (score 1-0)

Not much for HB Koge now to play for with 5 games left. Look very safe from relegation (11 pts above drop zone). Hopefully they release Stamenic a bit early to go into camp with AWs. Though parent club FC Copenhagen could I guess even call him up for a late season game if they wrap up Superliga title early.

Stamenic with the go ahead goal from the penalty spot as HB Køge go 2-1 over Esbjerg heading into H/T.

HB Køge (7th) with the 2-1 win over Esbjerg (11th).
Stamenic subbed off at 77 mins (2-1).

HB Køge now 14 pts clear of the drop zone (Esbjerg), with 4 games left, so now officially sage from relegation.

Hopefully they agree to release Stamenic a bit early (their last game is 28th May) for when AWs start to assemble 23rd May.

3 wins for teams with Kiwis in Denmark this weekend. Can Bell's Brondby make it 4, and break their losing trot tomorrow. Tough ask hosting to FC Copenhagen.

Edit - full game in a 2-0 win.

Pity HB Køge (7th, and well safe from relegation) didn't make the Promotion Round along with Helsingor. They only missed out on 6th at end of regular season on GD. They are basically cruising through this Relegation Round, so shame Stamenic didn't get to test himself against the better teams chasing promotion in cut throat tense games, latter half of the season.

Who knows for the next WC cycle, AWs may end up needing quality CBs, more than quality midfielders. World tipping on it's axis.

Who even needs an offseason, aye? Most All Whites who were part of that last squad are on holiday at the moment but Marko Stamenic can’t afford to skip out on important early preseason opportunities with the Danish champions as he tries to make his case for first team squad duties. So as FCK played friendly number one of their 2022-23 preparations, against Silkeborg, there was Marko amongst the starters. Named at centre-back, curiously enough.
Not a lot of single digit numbers there. Game one, very much a team of backups for the most part. Stamenic played the first half before a raft of changes followed at the break. Lots of touches. Looked very comfortable on the ball moving it around and trying to instigate things. Stepped up in the dribble a couple times. Didn’t have a heap of defending to do but there were some nice moments. Good half from the fella. Then he went and put his feet up.

Marko Stamenic had a prominent role in early preseason a year ago before spending the term out on loan with HB Køge, first for half a season then he went back on a second loan following the winter break. He was top quality for HBK playing in the second tier of Danish footy and starting basically every game he was available for. Usually as a defensive midfielder. The trick now is whether he’s ready for first team footy or if another loan will have to suffice since as good as he was for HBK there’s a big difference between a lower half second tier team and the defending league champions. But that’s what preseason is for.

Stamenic comes off the bench to play the second half for FC København in a 7-0 (SEVEN!?!) victory over Feyenoord.

Not an excessive amount of Marko Stamenic in the highlights there but important to note that, as FCK picked a team much closer to their full strength team than the backups and reserves who started the first preseason fixture, Stamenic still came off the bench at half-time in this friendly against Dutch club Feyenoord.

Copenhagen won the game 7-0 with most of the damage done in the first half. It was 5-0 at HT. Should point out that Feyenoord themselves did not go with a full strength line-up which obviously skewed the result and the performance. But those aren’t the things that matter.

What matters is that Marko Stamenic continues to feature prominently in preseason perparations as the 20 year old tries to crack that first team. Got to play in his favoured central midfield position here too having been a central defender in the previous exhibition. Stammers was one of seven subs used by FCK at the break. Club captain and fellow midfielder Zeca is not expected to play any part in next weekend’s friendly against Club Brugge (Belgium) either so hopefully that means even more of a window for Marko to strut his stuff. The Superliga season begins in two weeks, a tad earlier than usual due to the travesty of a November World Cup.

From Flying Kiwis.

The November World Cup means that all high level club leagues have to take a break around that time which in turn means that the Danish Superliga has to start a little earlier than usual. Like, next week to be specific. That’s caused less preseason action than would normally take place - FCK only got three exhibition matches done. 2-0 vs Silkeborg with a second string side. 7-0 vs Feyenoord with a mostly top team but against a second string side. Now 4-2 against Belgian champs Club Brugge in a 120 minute fixture that allowed everyone a decent run.

Marko Stamenic was on the bench to begin with, no surprises there. But he was amongst the first wave of subs brought on after an hour as the gaffer made a quintuple substitution. Copenhagen were 2-0 down at that stage yet they’d go on to rally back beautifully to win 4-2 on the back of some impressive depth.

Stammers had a good chance to pull one back with an open header from a corner that he put over the top after 67 mins. Two mins later Pep Biel scored a direct free kick and five after that they won a penalty which was converted by the same man. The third goal didn’t come until the 109th minute, well into the bonus zone, but when it did it was sparked by a slick through ball by Stamenic from midfield. William Bøving was the man who eventually polished it off. Then Roony Bardghji banged in another on 113’. Here’s that pass from Marko...

FCK coach Jess Thorup: “We started making the first substitutions in the middle of the second half, and the rest of the match showed that we have - and need - a really deep squad. So for both the players who started and who came on today, it doesn't determine the selection for next Sunday. There are a lot of choices for the coaches, and it is a good place to be right now. We're ready for the Superliga and the Champions League playoff.”

Stamenic got himself into some pretty advanced areas during this match, particularly while he was out there with more of the starters. As more subs entered the contest he moved deeper into a more usual role for him but it does show they see him as possessing a bit of versatility. He was a CB in the first friendly, played defensive mid in the second, then operated often as an attacking mid and then later a box to box eight in this last one.

Fingers crossed he’s done enough to earn a senior squad spot because the proper stuff begins very soon. First with a couple of Superliga games and then before you know it there are Champions League qualifiers swinging around – FCK enter in the final playoff round where the winners will advance to the UCL group stage and the losers will drop into the Europa League group stage. The draw for that round doesn’t take place until 1 August as there are still two and a half earlier rounds to conclude first.

The July start to the season could sneakily come in handy for Stamenic as the transfer window in Denmark doesn’t close until the end of August. Meaning that they could have up to six weeks before they decide to send him out on a developmental loan, keeping him around the first team picture for longer. Or he could simply be a fully fledged first teamer now, who knows? We’ll get an answer to that question soon enough.

Heard two interesting things from sources in Denmark:

- Marko Stamenic is an expected part of the first team this season; given squad number 35, though another loan is possible with the imminent arrival of a starting CM

- HB Koge, Stamenic's old loan club, are apparently in the market for young Kiwi talent

Poach Just and McCowatt and push hard for promotion or go for some less proven players? Would be a great move for Pijnaker imo

Superliga kicks off this weekend. Be interesting to see if Stamenic makes the match day squad for FCK.

Both them and Bell's Brondby play tomorrow.

1st Division (2nd tier) starts next weekend. No gossip yet on either Just or McCowatt on the move from Helsingor.

Lot of people on Danish twitter saying he might even be starting. One journalist said he'd be surprised if he didn't play (hard to tell if he means as a starter or as first CM off the bench). Awesome news if that holds any truth, deserves a chance to show his growth over the past couple years

Subbed on at HT (0-0) which is a promising sign. Though FCK are now down 0-1 in 2nd half

Finished a 0-1 loss. So not a great result at home for last season's champs against newly promoted Horsens.

Stamenic on for the 2nd half and getting a yellow card.

But future of NZ football continues to look bright. A midfield of 2 guys at 2 of the better Danish Superliga clubs, a guy now signed on a senior Serie A deal (Garbett), and another who would have been signed by Werder Bremen had he passed his medical.

Hopefully Stamenic can nail down a spot in the match day 22.

Real pity it wasn't Helsingor that FCK were hosting, rather than Horsens who did get promoted. Would have been quite an occasion, potentially Just, McCowatt & Stamenic all running around the field. All ex Ole. But alas.

Gets a spot on the bench again, this time around they're away against Aalborg BK. Just coming up to the end of the first half, currently 0-0.

Came on in the 82 min with FCK up, 2-1, and they go on to win 3-1.
Good signs that he's going to be in their squad this season.

Draw is 2nd August to see who FCK will play in UCL playoff round. Two legged playoffs.

Win that and Stamenic & Co will be into the UCL group stage proper which would be great.

Thomas's PSV got very close a few times. But think it's been awhile since a Kiwi was involved in the UCL group stages??

Thomas’ PSV were in the group stage proper in his first season (18/19); finishing bottom in a group alongside Barcelona, Tottenham and Inter. Unfortunately, like most of his time at the Philips Stadion-outfit, he missed it entirely through injury. Sarpreet Singh also got as far as sitting on the bench against Tottenham for Bayern’s 3-1 home win in December 2019, but he never got on.

The last would be Chris Killen back in 07/08, as he made 1 start and 4 substitute appearances as Celtic finished second in their group, behind Milan and ahead of Benfica and Shakhtar. Killen came off the bench in the 2-0 away loss and 2-1 home win against Shakhtar, the 2-1 win against Milan, the 1-0 home win over Benfica. His only start came in the 1-0 away defeat to Benfica. He didn’t play away to Milan or in either Round of 16 defeats to Barcelona.

Before that you’re looking at Hay in 00/01 with his substitute appearance in a 4-0 away loss to Barcelona, and 1-1 away draw at Milan. Wynton Rufer scored three goals in the group stage proper in 93/94, against Porto, Anderlecht and Milan (a theme with NZers I guess), but it was only enough for third in the group so they missed out on the semifinals. I think that might be all, but I could’ve forgotten someone.

Wonder if his couple of brief bench appearances, coupled with not even making the squad in the past couple of games (but still playing for the reserves) means he might be sent back out on loan in the near future?

Wonder if he'd be able to get a loan to another Superliga club or even one of the recently promoted clubs? I see Horsens currently have a first team squad of 20, which does seem a little bit light. 👀

Stamenic on an extended bench for a 2-1 win, and subbed on in 89th min. So UCL football just 90 mins away for him if FCK can get a result in Turkey next week

Socceroo Matt Ryan made his FCK debut in goal. Looks like he’s on loan from Real Sociedad??
