77 mins (2-0) in a 2-0 win for The Posh

Paul Ifill thinks he’ll get a move to a higher level next season, esp if he goes well at the WC

Apparently The Posh are known as a club that promotes young talent to on sell

Anyway just great he’s playing after losing most of last season not

Apparently Garbs was fans MoTM on Boxing Day, and again this morning playing as a 10.

Posh up to 11th, only 6 pts off the playoff spots.
5 wins and a draw in their last 6 games.

Over night match highlights. Posh in the blue, Garbs no 28, with some nice touches.
Pre assist for the first goal, an oggie.

Posh up to 10th, only 4 pts off the playoff spots.
They were rock bottom last when Garbs arrived there early season.

Hopefully he's in The Championship next season with the Posh, or another club.

Highlights. Peterborough in the blue (Garbs 2no 8). Cuts in and places it neatly with his left peg.

The Posh look like one of the best sides in the league at the moment. Don't think they'll get promoted but if Garbs continues his form I could see Peterborough selling him in the summer if a good bid comes through.

A lot of paper talk that Lisbie is being courted by championship clubs, so they may be more reliant on playing through Garbett's right wing.
Annual finals disappointment enthusiast.

..........that’s six wins from their last eight matches. They were last when Fergie got sacked... they’ve since climbed all the way up to tenth and are much closer to playoffs than to relegation. Amazing turnaround and Garbett has been busy in amongst it all, finally getting some reward for his toil with this goal.

Garbs was mostly playing as a central midfielder under Ferguson but Williams has a different system and he’s (Garbs) predominantly been an attacker since then, usually out on the right wing. Fortunately, the coach has given him a licence to drift around and get involved where he can. Needless to say, the Posh fanbase still adores him, voting him as the club’s Man of the Match as has been the case in three of the last five matches. He’s the second most fouled played in League One this term (averaging 2.6 free kicks won per 90 mins).

Matt Garbett: "I’m not really a winger so the gaffer gives me a lot of freedom. I am allowed to float around and it’s been working well. Bolton struggled at times to know who they needed to pick up. Peter Kioso sacrifices a lot when I play on that side with him as he knows I will go inside a lot, which leaves the channel for him to cover. But I can spin on the outside as well and often the opposition don’t know what we are going to do next. We’ve become very adaptable and we are evolving nicely.

The only way to bounce back from a tough loss was to get a good home win, and I was pleased I managed to get my first goal since the new gaffer came in. We spoke at half-time about making sure we scored the second goal of the game and we managed to do it early. I’ve had a lot of chances in recent weeks. I’ve been getting in good positions and getting shots away so now I’ve got a goal hopefully a few more will follow. The response from the previous game shows we are in a great place. To win so convincingly shows the fans we are still focussed on winning as many games as possible.”

Garbett off at 75 mins (0-0) in a triple change.

Unfortunately Stevenage get a 79th min winner, for 1-0.

The Posh drop to 10th, and are now 7 pts off the playoff spots.

Has anyone been following Garbett closely?

It certainly doesn’t seem that he’s clearly too good for the level?

However, he’s been starting and getting good minutes.

Seems to be a fan favourite, but that might be as much because of the him being a heart on your sleeve guy who gives his all. Peterborough have turned their season around since his arrival.

3 goals and 1 assist in 23 League One games. 5 yellows.

The Posh (10th, 38 pts) are still a playoff chance. And promotion might be Garbs best hope of getting to a higher level in the short term. They have one game in hand on Huddersfield (6th, 45 pts). But as is usual there are a cluster of teams, chasing the playoff spots.

Stevenage (42 pts) with their win over Peterborough go 7th, and have 2 games in hand on Huddersfield.

The Posh host Huddersfield this weekend. Still 17-19 rounds to go for L1 clubs.

Good ole Niche Cache provide the answers.

Summary sounds like he's been a bit mixed of late.
It is his first season in the UK, so still learning a fair bit you'd imagine. It's a long season, so some inconsistency to be expected.

.....he followed that up with his worst performance of the season when Peterborough played away against Wycombe Wanderers – bad enough that they subbed him off ten minutes into the second half, with a 1-0 lead looking very delicate at the time. The sub worked because they were able to settle into a more structured, defensive set-up and then pounce on the counter to reinforce some control on the way to a 2-0 victory. Lifts them up to ninth (remember when they were all the way down at the bottom not so long ago?).

Luke Williams, PUFC coach: “We looked like we had lost the rhythm at that point but it’s pretty scary taking off Jimmy-Jay Morgan and Matty Garbett because they are fantastic footballers but they spent so much energy in the first half and in general with the minutes they have played. I felt we were probably going to concede more territory but that we would have an opportunity to break.”

A rare off-day from Garbett. Worked hard but the things he tried didn’t seem to stick and the coach decided to try something else. Fair enough. Having said that, he wasn’t a whole lot better when they faced Stevenage away a few days later.

Operating in his
usual right wing spot (with full licence to roam), Garbs was all over the place trying to get involved but kept trying to do too much which led to a lot of turnovers and a lot of fouls as he hustled to make up for his mistakes. Couldn’t get into the areas he likes. Eventually he was substituted as part of a triple change with 15 minutes remaining... Posh leaking a goal shortly afterwards to lose 1-0 and miss out on the chance to close the gap to the playoff positions

Yeh, everyone has bad games I guess. Especially creative players. Perhaps a winter/spring reset coming up soon…

One bright side is The Posh (10th) won 6-1.
Though they are still 8 pts off the playoff spots.

Garbett (23) was seen wearing a protective boot before Peterborough’s latest fixture, a 6-1 win against Wigan Athletic in English Football League One, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.

The New Zealand international was left out of the matchday squad, missing his first club game since November.

The Telegraph‘s Ben Jones reported that Garbett “is set for an as yet unconfirmed period out of the side.”

“Posh boss Luke Williams stressed at full-time that Garbett was wearing the boot as a precaution, but did confirm that he was suffering with pain,” Jones reported

Williams said: “It is protective. We are trying to take a precaution because he is in pain. He is suffering, otherwise he would play.

“There is no doubt the boy is desperate to play, but he can’t if he is in that much pain.

“We are trying to get to the bottom of it and there is something more serious that could be a problem so we have to take the load off him before that happens.

“We have to protect him so that he can make a quick recovery rather than having an extended time out.”

When pushed on a timescale and asked if Garbett was likely to miss the next couple of games, Williams replied ‘potentially that.’

Sounds like Garbs just needs some time off his foot.

https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/sport/football/peterborough-united/peterborough-united-wont-be-taking-any-risks-with-garbett-and-another-set-back-for-adebisi-5508889

Peterborough United won't be taking any risks with Garbett and another set back for Adebisi.

Peterborough United will continue to adopt a safety first policy towards injured midfielder Matt Garbett.

Garbett was a surprise absentee from Saturday’s 6-1 demolition of
Wigan Athletic on Saturday. He was then spotted watching the game wearing a protective boot as a result of a foot injury.

Posh boss Luke Williams insists rushing him back into action risks long-term damage and the 23 year-old has a World Cup to take part in later in the year.

Williams said:
“Matt’s problem needs protection and constant monitoring. It’s a minor injury that could become a major one if we don’t look after it. We also want to send him to the World Cup in the best possible shape, although believe me he would play now if he could.

update on the injury that Matt Garbett has been coping with recently. He was spotted in a moon boot at a recent Peterborough game but his coach has stressed that it was a pre-emptive absence to prevent a small issue from becoming a big issue. The club website reckons he’ll miss another two games which puts him on an informal schedule to return at the start of March.

Hopefully to return for the Kiwi L1 derby verus Port Vale in a few weeks.
https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2026/02/20/all-whites-marko-stamenic-and-matthew-garbett-to-miss-upcoming-club-games/

Midfielder Garbett (23) is having treatment for a foot injury that’s forced him to miss four games for English Football League One side Peterborough United.

The club has provided an update on his progress, saying he’ll miss games against Exeter City and Northampton Town, but they hope Garbett will be available to play Port Vale on March 8 (NZT).

Williams told the Peterborough Telegraph: “Matt’s problem needs protection and constant monitoring. It’s a minor injury that could become a major one if we don’t look after it.

“We also want to send him to the World Cup in the best possible shape, although believe me, he would play now if he could.”
