**Disclaimer, not saying that it's his level but he's been released at a tricky time to find another pro gig.

US and Scandinavian windows are open, plenty of Kiwis have made a career out of those leagues

Bad news for Matt.

Hopefully something turns up for him. Not surprised by this given how far he'd fallen in the pecking order. Onwards and upwards!

Jets have deleted all mentions about Matty being released and he has been spotted in photos still training, so unsure what is up with this now.

If Steven Old can forge a career at League Two level, so can Ridenton.

Unfortunately I imagine Newcastle will cut him adrift at season end, and his A League days will be over.

Don't forget when Old was a teenager he was seen as being leaps and bounds ahead of Ridenton talent wise and was being flagged as a long term AW Captain.

Not so much a 'mutual termination' then?

Jets fan that I speak with says he has heard there are a few issues with it. Piney must have heard that talk also judging by a tweet he made to someone.

One of the comments was to the effect of "they may have announced the release before he'd agreed to it".

If I was Matt, I'm riding the pine there, staying fit and looking for a new contract in the US/Scandy this come season end. Better off training with a professional group than finding a part time gig elsewhere - he wouldn't still be there if he had good options.

He was released after the transfer window closed, so this raises some questions.

Interesting, see in the press release they seem to think he will be available to play in their first up game against Adelaide.

Free agent if released. Transfer window doesn't matter?

Why? If he's not under contract, he's a free agent. Doesn't matter when he was released.

If you're released after the transfer window's shut you can't sign for another A-League club IIRC. Probably allowed to make this transfer because it's July, technically an A-League transfer window

He was contracted when the window closed & a new window hasn't opened yet. FFA can register him in 'exceptional circumstances' but I would hardly class this as exceptional circumstances.

CCM have tried to sign a couple of  off contract Aussie kids from Asian leagues and have been denied ITCs but they have had to deal with FIFA as well as the FFA.

Everything about this is exceptional circumstances.

Very surprised to see another Aussie club pick him up as an import.

The Roar have only lost 1 player due to the season being extended due to the pandemic. They signed an amateur kid from the NPL yesterday. So they are not short on players.

I'm happy for Matty to get another chance but I don't see this as exceptional circumstances.

Maybe they're taking his termination date from the day the Jets announced it, not the day it became mutual. :P

Both releases were after the window closed & the new window isn't open yet (that is why CCM can't get the ITCs). You can only open for 12 weeks so if they opened it now, it means it would close well before the new season starts.

There is a worldwide pandemic that caused the league to stop for four months, doubts remain whether it will even be possible to complete the current season, and all the usual timeframes, including transfer windows and player contracts, have been thrown completely out of whack. If this isn't exceptional circumstances, then that very concept becomes meaningless and we may as well dispense with it.

Ouch... but at least he did ok there and maybe won a few people back.

Will be interesting if the NIX look at him. With a reduced salary cap, he will come cheap and has plenty of experience. Would only grab him if we lost Steinmann. Lewis can replace McCowatt.

Interesting to see him re-signed. He seemed to have lifted his game in the ones he appeared in at the end of last season.

He may have plenty of experience but he is still crap.

He is only just coming into prime age for a midfielder, I think he will do well for us.

He'd have to do better then Hooper that's for sure if playing as a forward.

I hope so, he left under quite a toxic regime and cloud so hopefully everything is much better for both parties this time around. Hope he's learnt how to score though ;)

Bit excited about this as I've always like Ridenton.

thinking about how we line up, I could see him playing the role matti played last season next to Devlin. From memory, his passing range and accuracy wasn't bad and if cammy is doing the leg work on closing down players, he can look for the intercepts and keep the play moving.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

He’s been pretty woeful at the 6 position at the Nix and Jets bar one or two performances. Much better at 8 like how he was played at Brisbane.

I think he still has the potential that made Ernie sign him as an import when he left. Looking forward to it.
