Will really come down to who wants to play and who's good enough. Unless she finds a pro contract overseas in the meantime (reasonably likely imo), you'd have to assume Hahn is in both those categories.

she's only one year in to university in the US so won't get a pro contract for another couple of years - although I think she will once she's finished there

but given what she said about the difference between NZ and Germany in playing styles I'd expect her to be looking at Europe

Fair points - I'm not convinced that NCAA Soccer will be worth returning to in the near future though, maybe even not before a Nix W-League team is up and running given how COVID is tracking over there.

One thing that's amazed me getting around the grounds over the last month is that so many players do seem to be planning on heading back come August.

true, my son is home from a basketball scholarship and he is heading back. Most colleges are carrying on as normal with the expectation they will play.

I presume the idea behind the Nix having a NWL team, is effectively a female replica of Weenix.

There are plans to bring girls into the Nix Academy?
If not a NWL side for younger squad players or players returning from injury, does the W League have a Reserve/youth league?

Suspect not.

Bearing in mind Nix W League team will be based in Oz, and also W League is pretty short as well.

well no, as it would be NZF driven in prep for 2023 WC - so they would be NZ eligible players

You think NZF would force the Nix to sign 100% NZ players? Seems a little far fetched, the Nix would have to exist as their own women's team beyond 2023.

That's right. Unless NZF agrees to bankroll the considerable cost of an W League side, no way Nix should feel compelled to make it 100% Kiwis.

If anything it sounds until recently (in Andy Martin's reign) NZF were more of an obstacle getting a W League team up and going.

Side will mostly be based in Australia, and I think Dome/Morrison have said it will contain some Aussies for sure (probably with W League experience). Also they have talked about including some players from the Islands as well.

NZF have been fully behind a W-League side as long as one's ever been talked about.

David Dome was on the pod a few months back, and unless I seriously misheard him, he said no NZF had not until more recent times, been that helpful with getting a W League team up and running.

Perhaps related more so to Nix initially aiming to have a women's team in the NWL, as a first step.

Some of NZF's issues sounded like it was around perceived possible undermining of the FFDP, plus various regional federations/existing NWL teams worried that a Nix NWL team would just lead to an exodus of all their best talent to Wellington.

Anyway he did say progress was now being made, to solve these obstacles.

I repeat: NZF have been fully behind a W-League side as long as one's ever been talked about.

Since FFDP was set up post-Rio it's always been hoped a W-League team would come into the frame to cover the other half of the year (the first half being the NZ winter).

Hare-brained ideas about first putting a Nix team in the NWL (Why? Where would the players come from?) are a different matter. That NZF and the federations had no interest in that happening is completely understandable. But this has no relation to a Phoenix W-League side, other than it involves the Phoenix and women's football, and no relation to NZF's support of it.

Anyway, I get the sense a lot of change is coming in the FFDP/NWL space in the near future.

A Nix team in the NWL makes a ton of sense - where else are the academy players not making the first team going to play? Seems to me like getting a team in there before the W-League would be a solid proof of concept and a good step to take in the season or two before joining W-League instead of trying to build a pro team from scratch. Pity that NZF and the federations are so opposed to progress, but hardly surprising.

Hey team love the chat but can we focus back on the player rather than the Shenix or the SheWeeNix here

I will make one final comment, to shift this to the W-League thread.

With the Nayler signing to Bayern, thought I'd check out Maya Hahn.

She played 8 (3 starts) Frauen Bundesliga games last season. Her team Turbine Potsdam were pretty awful and got relegated. They had a -55GD over the 22 game season, so losing on average with a 2.5 goal difference!

She's still with them in the German Women 2nd tier.

I believe she was injured for a large part of last season. Here’s hoping she can get fit and nail down a starting spot in the 2nd tier.

Now Turbine Potsdam are back in the Bundesliga, it made me wonder about Hahn. I know she switched, but with nothing really coming off it, is there a chance she could play for the Ferns?

FIFA has shown flexibility when the player and countries are keen to push it.

Don't think she every represented Germany at any level.
Covid cancelling some of the underage national tournaments was a factor.

Never played for a German national team at any level, so I think she can switch back??

Actually has a NZ U20 team mate at Turbine Potsdam. As mentioned by Niche Cache.
https://theniche-cache.com/football/2024/8/21/previewing-aotearoa-at-the-2024-u20-womens-world-cup

Suya Haering hasn’t debuted for Turbine Potsdam yet but she did spend half a year with them on the way towards promotion and is therefore now prepping for season in the Bundesliga. She’s a teammate of former NZ age-grader Maya Hahn in Potsdam. Haering is a left-back specialist with shades of a young Ali Riley about her (and not just because they were both also eligible for America – Haering actually has four nations of eligibility, with Germany and Taiwan also in there).

Hahn was a regular with Potsdam last season in Frau Bundesliga 2.
The Frau Bundesliga starts 31st August

Is good news. She was one of the more promising players in her age group in NZ.

But not really happening for her in Germany. Her club Potsdam rock bottom in the Frau Bundesliga, with only 1 goal in 12 league games!!  Have a -33 GD. Hahn played every match.

Seems a pattern, that Potsdam get promoted from the 2nd tier then immediately get hammered back in the top tier. Relegated season 22/23 with a -55 GD from 22 games. Hahn was there then as well.

NZU20 player Suya Haering (2 league games) is also at Potsdam.

But yeah 23 yr old Hahn a nice addition to the Ferns small pool of quality creative attacking players.

Maya Hahn - born and raised in NZ, German youth international, to play for New Zealand
Tommy Smith - raised in NZ, England youth international, plays for New Zealand
Winston Reid - born and raised in NZ (mostly), Denmark youth international, played for New Zealand
Leo Bertos - born and raised in NZ, openly declared he would rather play for whichever of Greece or Romania selected him first, played for New Zealand
Chris James - born and raised in NZ (mostly), England youth international, played for New Zealand
Grace Neville - England youth international, plays for New Zealand

Michael McGlinchey - born in NZ, raised in Scotland, Scottish youth international, played for New Zealand
Joey Champness - born in NZ, raised in Australia, Australian youth, played for NZ
Keegan Jelacic - born Australia (NZ mother), NZ U17s, swapped to Australia (U23s)

A difference with Hahn is she represented NZ at youth level, then swapped to Germany (youth), and now back to NZ (senior). She also had a few parting shots at football in NZ when she made the switch to Deutschland.

But hey she was like 19-20 when she left NZ for Germany? Who hasn't said a few things at that age, they may later regret? She also went through the Democratic Republic of Ole, and their former Supreme Leader often filled his young students heads with anti NZ football thoughts.

Happy to have Hahn back available for the Football Ferns. Though from afar judging the club she has been at for 3 seasons now (highly likely relegated to the German 2nd tier), she ain't no immediate saviour for the blunt Ferns attack.

Yes referring to playing youth footy for NZ before telling Nz to GGF - which is unlike anyone else as far as I am aware

Rory Fallon, born in NZ  played England U16, U17, U18 & U19, played for New Zealand
Shane Smeltz, German born, Australian Raised, played for NZ

Although back to Feverish's original point, it is a bit embarrassing, especially when she opted for Germany, she came out and slated the style of NZ's play and the set up here.

Does it matter. She was a young kid, when she switched to Germany, and grew up in a NZ household speaking German. Can't blame her if she wanted to have a crack at playing for a big football nation. The pathways for young NZ female footballers weren't so good back then. US College route or amateur FFDP. No ALW pathway

Sure she said some things she shouldn't have, but that comes with being around the influence of the Mad Hatter Declan.

I'd take Tyler Boyd & Gianni Stensness back into the AWs setup no problems, if the FIFA rules allowed and they were keen.

Presumably Hahn can only flip flop back to NZ, because she never got capped for a German national youth team?? Only involved with age group camps??

I understand Jelacic for example can't switch back again to NZ, as he's been capped by Australia U23s (Olyroos).

We will just blame Declan

It's no coincidence that Tyler Boyd also went through (early) Ole.

Plus most ex alumini look(ed) overseas for their first pro deal, rather than closer to home. McCowatt and his one season at the Nix, an exception, from the days Declan was in charge at Ole.

Edge definitely fed the narrative that you were better out of the NZF system, and the Phoenix weren't worth bothering with. Admittedly we are talking alot about the days Herbert was the coach.

Was she wrong in slating NZF? Judging by all of the not so positive happenings around the woman's team in the last few years probably not.

Was she wrong in slating NZF? Judging by all of the not so positive happenings around the woman's team in the last few years probably not.

Not sure it was really direct criticism of NZF, but more about the (skill) level of the women's game in NZ at the time.

I think some at the time perceived she was a bit arrogant. But hey again she was pretty young, and coming out of the Ole camp.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/football/football-young-kiwi-football-star-maya-hahn-on-choosing-germany-over-new-zealand/5EXSA4LNCLAYC7BWRQHAXAZFZ4/#google_vignette

"I can see now how playing at Ole prepares players for Europe," said Hahn.

"When I went into the German camp I was able to fit into the style they were playing and what the other players were thinking. They were in spaces I was familiar with and thinking in a similar way to me.

"It's been harder to find that connection in other environments I've been in. It was more instant when I went over there which was a nice feeling."

She has a lot of kissing up to do but is she really any better then other Ferns? Based on club form, I think not.

I recall a fair few on this website occasionally having opinions on NZ football and particularly the Ferns, their various coaches, the oversight on the team, the lines of accountability etc etc…

Just they had no option of becoming fans of Germany by birth or descent I guess!
