Good stuff, we certainly have our fair share of defenders available.

I wonder if this will make the news tonight? or get any press coverage here. Certainly a big deal. Hope both of them can become first team regulars in a couple of years.

I doubt it.  Being drafted doesn't even mean they have come to a contract agreement - from my understanding- just that the side that drafted them have the right to negotiate.

he's gonna be in camp with about about 20 other guys (they have about 13-14 signings so far) so he's gonna have to take his chances. let us not assume like hard news says that this means he's going to get on the park.

hope so though

The Canadian Press wrote:
Tom Soehn, Vancouver's director of soccer operations, has seen enough tape on Boxall, and watched him live, to feel confident in his skills.

"He's a physical presence," Soehn said. "He plays big.

"I don't think he had the greatest combine, but when you watch him in his college games, he did very well. The difficult part is, when guys go to the combine, they will have been off two or three months. They are probably not the same as they were at the end of the season."

So the Herald and ZB have it wrong then

"Two up and coming New Zealand footballers have earned professional contracts in the MLS.

Defender Michael Boxall will play his football with the Vancouver Whitecaps this year after being selected as the number one pick in the supplemental draft.

Midfielder Dan Keat has been drafted third and will join the LA Galaxy, home of former England captain David Beckham.

Both Boxall and Keat are former national age-group teammates."

Good luck to them whatever stage they are at

No he has yet to earn a contract with vancouver. And also Boxall could be the second kiwi with the Whitecaps after Ben Mckendry who is playing with Vancouver Whitecaps Residency.

Great stuff

Whilst I hope Boxall is a riht back, I assume he is a CB?

In terms of Keat, does anyone know where in midfielder he plays and what type of player he is (i.e: an elliot, brown or bertos?) and if he has a passing game?

"The Supplemental draft follows last weeks Super Draft and neither guarantees a contract. Boxall and Keat will have to impress their new clubs during pre-season."
Sauce - NZ Football

What's likely is someone from the NZPA or similar saw the news and misinterpreted their draft as signings. And then everyone here has just ran with it. Either way, neither player has earned a contract with either club. Hard News had it spot on earlier - Vancouver just picked up exclusive bargaining rights with Boxall.

Boxall played 63 minutes in Vancouver's 2-1 win over Columbus Crew. Had a good game according to Marc Weber, the Whitecaps reporter for The Province.

AucklandPhoenix - Not sure. Making an educated guess, I'd imagine it only covers the length of a trial, while granting the drafting team some limited exclusivity should an unsigned player sign with MLS at a later stage. Should he not earn a contract with the Caps, he should be available to other clubs. Even if he doesn't make the senior team, it's quite possible he could play for the reserves or be loaned out to a lower league side (NASL or USLPRO).

Another good report about michael in the same game:

Hulking New Zealand centre back Michael Boxall one of the Caps' three supplemental draft picks started the game and showed well. But the club's other supplemental picks, left-sided player Santiago Bedoya and midfielder-forward Joe Anderson, didn't see the field

By the same guy too  Weber seems like a good sort, pretty sure I've heard him interviewed on one of the Canadian soccer podcasts I listen to.

Bit of a concern about his international status, I'd imagine if he were domestic he'd be signed by now. That being said, the Caps have a few extra import slots thanks to expansion draft trades. Fingers crossed.

Caps' SuperDraft pick Jeb Brovsky uses Twitter to promote his nonprofit, Peace Pandemic, which aims to empower youth through peaceful action. But he also revealed to fans that hulking teammate Michael Boxall is equally as intimidating off the field. "Boxall still looks scary sleeping," Brovsky tweeted.

Boxall is still on trial with the whitecaps. What's the limit date to sign the players in your roster at the MLS?

March 5, 2011 at 7:36 PM

Vancouver Whitecaps FC Lineup

Jay Nolly (Joe Cannon 63'), Jonathan Leathers, Jay DeMerit, Greg Janicki, Alain Rochat (Gershon Koffie 90'), Wes Knight, John Thorrington (Alexandre Morfaw 84'), Terry Dunfield (Kevin Harmse 77'), Blake Wagner (Russell Teibert 63'), Atiba Harris (Camilo Sanvezzo 77'), Long Tan (Omar Salgado 84').

RESERVES: Bilal Duckett, Cornelius Stewart, Nizar Khalfan, Bedri Gashi, Michael Boxall.

Thordarson said many players had strong games Sunday including defender Michael Boxall and midfielder Alexandre Morfaw and he has many hard and tough decisions to make soon about player cuts and signings.

Janicki was his old self, cleaning up everything that came his way in the air and making key interceptions and tackles. Boxall was surprisingly good, and on the strength of this performance deserves a spot on the roster, especially with Mouloud Akloul still struggling to return from injury. Knight was excellent in his old position at right back, but Duckett struggled all game and rarely did well coming forward.

Boxall is in competition for the last spot at CB with akloul. And with Akloul injured, I think it won't be long before the whitecaps announce the signing of michael

Supplemental draft pick Michael Boxall, a 22-year-old out of the University of California-Santa Barbara, filled in for DeMerit at centre back and continued to show well. He had a tough task in facing Conor Casey, who is a tank, and Omar Cummings one of the leagues top forward partnerships.

Boxall, a hulking New Zealander, will soon be officially added to the Caps roster, but DeMerit, who is nursing a groin injury, is expected back for the opener against Toronto.
