Itll be interesting to see if McGlinchey is in the frame for a start for the Mariners in the league opener via Melbourne. Now I am particularly grumpy that game wont be shown live by SKY. Marius Lacatus2010-03-16 13:59:14

Mariners fans are in love with him. Has been MOM once at least

Here is some info on his career to date, (pinched from their site), interesting reading

"" Michael McGlinchey- the facts.

Michael signed for Celtic in Jan 2003 after leaving school. He is the youngest player ever to play in Celtic fc first team when Martin O'Neil put him on against Wycombe fc for a friendly,  he was 15 years and 274 days old.

He went straight into the reserve team at 16 and won the reserve league 6 years in a row. Also played in Celtics under 19s side where they won 2 Scottish cups and 1 league title.

He made his first team debut in Dec 2005 for Strachan, going on when the score was 1.1 and winning 2.1 against Livingston fc. He also went on loan to Dunfermilne fc when they were 2nd bottom of the league. He played in 4 wins 4 draws and 2 defeats

He has played for Scotland 35 times from u17s to u21. He played in the final of the u19s European Championship losing 2.1 to Spain,  and played at the u20s World Cup in Vancouver.
One of his most memorable games was playing for Scotland u19s against France when they knocked out France in the European Championship.  France had Real Madrids Benzima playing and Arsenals  Sammy Nazari  playing. Not too bad a cv.""

Quite agree, a very good CV

Years ago I was hoping he'd end up a star for Scotland, but he never quite developed to that quality - though he was talked up as the next best thing. He turned down going to Manchester United cuz he wanted to stay with Celtic. He had one or two bad games for one of the Scotland youth teams and Strachan was very unimpressed. He apparently knew then he had pretty much blown his chance with Celtic. He didn't seem to impress at Dunfermline, as he wasn't able to get a contract anywhere in Scotland after Celtic dumped him. That's possibly to do with the style of the game in Scotland as much as a direct reflection in his ability.

Oh well, the rough last few years has been New Zealand's gain.

McGlinchey got on in the 55th minute for Motherwell in a 0-0 with Hamilton. He nearly scored at the death.

"As the final whistle neared, Motherwell's Michael McGlinchey produced a left-footed shot from just outside the box that inched wide. "

Checked out some Motherwell forum. Sounds like it was a terrible, boring match. Not too many positive comments about McGlinchey, though some of them seem (typically) a bit anti him cuz they'd rather a local lad getting a run instead of someone in on loan. You can read some comments here:

Had a chuckle that he was apparently pretending to stretch while talking to a mate ("Slickest move he had today").

One guy elsewhere said he looked pretty neat but should be on the wing. Obviously he's hardly played in the SPL and it's quite different from the A-League, and only a run on the bench so hard to read much into it (especially from daft fans!).

No votes for Man of the Match in the poll I saw. Interestingly, their vote had a 'null vote' option. I think about 10% had went for that (IE: they were all rubbish!). Motherwell must get that quite a lot to make that a feature of their polls!

That's a big win for Motherwell. Will probably make it tricky for him to make the team next weekend.

he wasnt in the squad for the 2-1 loss to Celtic yesterday either - dont know if he's injured or not required. Has played very little since signing with Motherwell.

Three losses in a row maybe they should change their midfield and give McGlinchey a start for a change and rev up to the usual playing line-up.

His 'comeback' include 90 mins of sitting on the bench.  They won 2-0 away from home though.

MOTHERWELL 6 HIBERNIAN 6 .

Motherwell came from 6.2 down to draw with a last minute goal, michael mcglinchey came on at 6.2 with 30 minutes to go and made a big impacted on the game the point means that motherwell are 1 win away from 4th place and european football next season ,motherwell missed a penalty at 6.5 what a game.

ludicrous game. they scored 4 unanswered while mcglinchey on the park so he cant have done too bad!

although, looking briefly at fan forum (not always to be trusted of course) they are generally bagging mcglinchey ("how did he miss that?", "has he ever done something good?" etc etc).

Yeah, crazy stuff. I can't think of another professional game with 12 goals in it - can think of a 7-4 and 8-3 in recent times.

Hard noised bunch the motherwell fans most of them walked out on the team at 6.2 but slinked back in to sign their hearts out at the end, its been the best preperation for the world cup he could have asked for going back to scotland and watch out for a start against rangers on sunday.

mcglinchey started the game vs rangers but was substituted at the 46th minutes by jamie murphy who scored a goal 5 minutes later!
