Central Coast extended their lead atop the A-League standings to eight points with a game in hand and again Michael McGlinchey was a driving force in midfield for the Mariners.

Patrick Zwaanswijk almost doubled the Mariners lead just before half-time when he connected with a Michael McGlinchey corner, but his header was scrambled off the line by the home defence.

Some of our other players were still at A-league pace and got caught out. Tim Brown and Tony Lochhead are too slow at international level and are severely lacking in one-on-one marking situations. Michael McGlinchey should have stayed on in the midfield, instead of Brown, if we are building for the future. We are still in desperate need of a strong midfield playmaker, to emulate what players like Steve Sumner and Michael McGarry brought to the All Whites.

The A-League premiers, Central Coast were humbled 0-2 by defending champions Brisbane Roar in the first leg of their major semifinal. Michael McGlinchey was again at the heart of the Central Coast midfield but was unable to influence the tie which now heads to Gosford for the return leg.

Prior to the second leg both sides have Asian Champions League assignments during the week Brisbane in Korea and Central Coast at Bluetongue Stadium.

McGlinchey missed the penalty to send Perth to the A league grand final.

In addition of Nelsen in DF and Smeltz at forward, Mcglinchey at MF woud be my choice as the third overaged player at the olympis. I know that Emblen spoke about Reid(1988), but he is still young and we already have tommy smith(1990) as a very good option...

He would be my choices as well, ahead of Smeltz in fact. We have other options up front, midfield seems a lot weaker.

I'm not convinced about that, simply because he is an attacking midfield type player and with Rojas and Kosta we already have two creative players in the squad, and Rojas can play centrally anyway. What we really lack is a defensive midfielder who can break up attacks and/or distribute from deep, like Vicelich or Elliott - McGlinchey is just not that sort of player. Smith actually did it a bit against Jamaica and looked alright IMHO so maybe taking Reid is a way of freeing Smith up for that role BarryZuckerkorn2012-04-26 17:55:10

McGlinchy is a better defender than Eilliot and probably Vicelich now. He is faster, busier and fitter. But the real issue is being able to bring the ball out from the back and distribute it. He is simply much better than those two are now.

Agreed on Elliott but I'm still not sure that he'd be better than Vicelich. Playing defensive mid in a team like NZ will probably have is as much about positioning, tackling, and winning headers as distributing and I don't know if McG's got the right build or skillset for that. I'd rather see a defender pushed forward for that reason than an attacking mid pushed back. No doubt McG would be great at the distributing aspect of the role but he just doesn't seem like the right fit to me.

Actually I think if you leave Smeltz out like you suggested and play a 4-2-1-3 then you can take Reid and McG, and play McG and Smith in DM together because they would complement each other well, Rojas can play in his preferred CAM position and Wood can be flanked by Kosta and someone else, like Lukas maybe.

Interesting debate though, it really serves to highlight the worrying lack of depth in defensive mids coming through NZ ranks. Every other position seems alright but there's no obvious defensive midfielders and most modern tactical systems utilise at least one. Old fashioned 4-4-2 doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the likes 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 in terms of flexibility due to increased player fitness and the slight loosening of the offside law effectively spreading games out over the park a bit more

Indeed, a significant part of the Mariners’ success last season can be attributed to the productive partnership developed down the teams’ right side. Bojic’s link play with New Zealand international Michael McGlinchey is again expected to terrorise opposition defences next season.

Last term the all action duo combined for an impressive 14 assists. The players also ranked equal fourth in the competition for completed crosses, and seventh (Bojic) and eighth (McGlinchey) league-wide for completed passes.

“Me and Mikey were pretty good this year, we got a lot of assists down that right side,” he said. “It is a fruitful partnership that we can hopefully look to build on next season.”

“For the time being I just want to take my game to the highest level possible, and win everything with the Mariners that we can.”

Michael McGlinchey - only Scottish footballer at the Olympics it seems - none likely in Pearce's squad - so gaining attention in Scottish media:

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/football/world-football/2012/07/01/ex-celti...

Ex-Celtic Star Michael McGlinchey Could Be Only Scottish Footballer at Olympics after New Zealand Call-up

Michael McGlinchey has the chance of a lifetime to play football at the Olympics – and says it’s a crying shame more Scots won’t be joining him.

The Glasgow-born New Zealand international has been called up as one of the All Whites’ over-age players for the Games in London this summer.

He was stunned when he found that, along with QPR defender Ryan Nelsen and Kiwi striker Shane Smeltz, he’d be spearheading their bid for a medal.

Since McGlinchey left Celtic three years ago he has settled at Australian club Central Coast Mariners and become a regular for his adopted country.

The former Scotland Under-19 starlet is ecstatic at the prospect of featuring in the Olympics – and can’t believe Team GB boss Stuart Pearce has snubbed all the tartan talent.

Celtic told coach Pearce that James Forrest wouldn’t be available for selection while the SFA have constantly repeated their stance against Scots being picked for the GB side.

The likes of Jordan Rhodes, Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher had agreed to play but they were left out of the 18-man squad.

And McGlinchey said: “It’s a shame that more young Scottish players won’t get a genuine once-in-a-lifetime chance to play at the Olympics.

“I can understand Celtic wanting to pull the likes of Forrest out due to the Champions League qualifiers but it should be the players’ decisions.

“I’m so grateful to my club for giving me a month off to play at the Olympics. It’s a tournament any player would want to be involved in and it’s sad that more Scots won’t be part of the GB team.

“I might be the only ‘Scot’ playing football at the Olympics, which is strange. But I’ve had a rollercoaster three years since moving to Australia – getting to the World Cup with New Zealand and now this.

Thought the wee one did alright in the Olympics. Is about to embark across the Pacific to New Caledonia with one of his sides, Central Coast, to help New Caledonia prepare to play his other side, the All Whites, next month in the World Cup qualifiers. From NZ Football:

"Michael McGlinchey and the Central Coast Mariners will venture to New Caledonia next week for a two-match tour of the Pacific Island.

New Caledonia are currently preparing for their 2014 FIFA World Cup Round 3 Qualifying Match against New Zealand on September 7, and have invited the Mariners to Noumea to assist them in their lead up. Graham Arnold’s men will face Les Cagous on August 16 and 18 in Noumea."

That number may be dropped to four next season, with national technical director Han Berger keen to reduce the number of foreigners.

Arnold currently has three, Kiwi Michael McGlinchey, Dutchman Patrick Zwaanswijk and new English signing Nick Montgomery, on his books and has made it his mission not to sign any more foreigners.

Wee Mac is in the last year of his CCM contract. I would love to see him here, but should he have another crack at Europe?

Another option I guess would be to stay 1 more season in Aussie and get a passport, so he can have a look for a gig in the J-League or K-League.

I'd like to see him have another crack at Europe, but what level could he play at (he's not prem level).

Play for a decent mid table Championship team maybe??

I think he's thriving as a part of this well drilled mariners side. Really knows his role fro the side and works hard.

Could kick it at championship level, but wonder if he'd consider a return to SPL? Might fit better?

Think most people would have him in their top 3. He would be my player of the year & import of the year. Much more consistent than Marco.

Watch out for the new series which debuted on Sky Sport last night called "The Code" which is a documentary following Central Coast's season across six half-hour episodes. Lots of behind-the-scenes stuff at training, in the dressing room, players socializing, interviews etc. "The Code" is an Aussie sports show which has been going a few years and focuses on a successful team in a different sports code each year. This year was football and the A-League's turn.

Wee Mac didn't feature much in the first episode which had interviews with manager Arnold and Rogic and a look at the Coast's impressive new training facility. But no doubt he'll pop up in future episodes as the season progresses...

Probably last night's episode will be repeated during the week on various Sky Sports channels.

Good program. When he speaks he is still hard to understand.

That's not really all that surprising, he's pretty much a Scotsman.

I think 'pretty much'is an understatement. Think he has only spent a few months of his life in NZ. That's why I always chuckle when I hear people call him a Kiwi.

Part and Parcel with football now adays with people playing for countries they have very tedious links to. Do host nations for WC get automatic qualification?? They use to didn't they?? Assuming they do... Qatar will be an interesting case when they host. They have other the last few years invested huge sums in setting up academies with players from all over the world (namely poor Africa Countries) in Qatar. Grab the best 13 / 14 year olds there, bring them out, train them see if they are any good and give them residency so they are elgible in the future for internationals. If you can buy the right to host a cup, why can't you effectively buy yourself a national team as well?

But if the national FA invests significant money into developing these young players within their own system, surely they can lay a claim that they're 'their' players, regardless of where they were born?
