I am a fan of Ryan's.. When he choose to play he was a rock, when he didn't make himself avalable it was disappointing. Jersey shouldn't be retired.
pretty sure they can't - in tournaments like WC etc numbers 1-23 (or whatever number they're allowed) must be used.
This.

nelly interview after first training session
Former All Whites defender Ryan Nelsen was cautiously optimistic after his first taste of football as a coach, with his Toronto FC team beaten 1-0 by Columbus Crew in the pre-season Disney World Pro Soccer Classic on Sunday (NZT).
The sole goal of the match came in the 30th minute, when Columbus Crew's Brazilian import Glauber headed home Argentinian playmaker Federico Higuain's corner.
Nelsen said afterwards he was pleased with Toronto's first hit-out under his stewardship.
"I think we only conceded two shots for the whole game," he said.
"We had a couple of very good chances, and I thought the guys got a good run-out."
Nelsen, who starred as a central defender in 49 appearances for the All Whites since 1999, wasn't too concerned at conceding from a set piece.
"We haven't spent too much time on set pieces, so I'm not too bothered about that - it's more in the open play.
"I thought the guys applied themselves very well, they kept their shape very well, and two or three of the best chances of the game fell to us.
"It's a game we'll look back on and take a lot of positives from."
Toronto have four games scheduled over two weeks at the Major League Soccer pre-season Disney Classic in Orlando, Florida. Their first MLS match of the season is against Canadian rivals Vancouver on March 2.
Nelsen, 35, ended his accomplished playing career last week with a match for English Premier League club Queens Park Rangers.
He is the eighth manager of Toronto FC since they were introduced to the MLS in 2007.
They have finished no better than 11th in six campaigns and Nelsen's predecessor Paul Mariner, a former England striker, was replaced after just six months.http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/football/news/article/-/16103114/low-key-start-for-nelsens-toronto-fc/

Clearly not interested in Kiwi Youth then.
He's a manager now. Time to lock said thread
Yeah, probably should be locked soon, but let's leave it for a few more days as he settles into his new role.
Wouldn't another thread just pop up about him managing this team? Maybe you could rename it to something more relevant/useful instead?

Nelsen ready to make coaching debut
Ryan Nelsen would not mind another five or six weeks of pre-season himself, but he has declared his Toronto FC players ready for their Major League Soccer season opener in Vancouver tomorrow (NZ time).
The former All Whites captain makes his coaching debut in the Canadian derby, about a month after joining Toronto. This followed his retirement as a player from both English Premier League and international football with New Zealand.
The past few weeks had been challenging, he said, as he got to grips with the demands of professional coaching, such as learning the club's infrastructure, recruitment, scouting and assessing the players he already had on his books, not to mention preparing the squad for the season.
"For me, I wish pre-season could go on for another five or six weeks, but the guys are ready, they're organised and they're really looking forward to it," Nelsen, 35, said. "It's an easy job on the sideline."
He was having fun, and said his early days of coaching were a different kind of stress to playing.
"It's one of the best jobs in the world. As a player, I didn't have fun when I was playing. It's a job, there's stress, pressure, people watching and expecting.
"There were people who could never get close to doing your job critiquing you every day. That's life. As a coach, it's a different type of stress."
His main challenge has been coming to terms with salary caps.
"That's probably the one thing I was most inexperienced in, looking at Toronto's salary cap and how it's been handled," he said. "I have found it interesting and challenging in a good way, trying to navigate through that. Once you get an idea of what you can do, then you can start thinking of solutions that are going to benefit the club in the short and long-term." Fairfax NZ

this stream fairly good also.
I know it is just the first game of the season, but can't help but think CCM & WSW would destroy both these sides.
I would agree at this early stage, But i have to admit i am surprised at how toronto seem
to be gelling, given the amount of changes in recent days/weeks.
0-0 at HT, very few chances so far. A lot of kick and hope from both sides.
Toronto defenders were very standoffish for the goal! very unlike nelly.
Ends 1-0. Reo-Coker came on at HT for Vancouver and changed the game. Toronto never looked likely. Very route one, cross Nelsen off the list for the next Nix coach.
Nelsen job to get a lot tougher as Nigerian Super-Star Obafemi Martins seems destined to sign for Seattle.
E's Flat Ah's Flat Too
Someone should tell Ryan that for a $12000 Western Union money transfer, I can give him 2 Nigerian superstar footballers. The $12k is for.... administration purposes, you know, grease the palms...... I might even throw in half of 78 million as well.
