There was also that bit after the last game in CHR when Siggy let slip about doing it for Ryan in his last game? Let me try find that. They may have already known but not been 'official'

Edit: Found it. Siggy said on air "Nelly reckons it might be his last one"

I can just imagine the angst if the Phoenix ever pulled a move like this though. Consider the amount of shit Ricki's been given just for missing parts of the pre-season while away with the AW's. Turns out what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I'm loving this story, it has so many interesting angles.

There's no doubt Ryan is going to be under huge pressure. This piece seems to be typical of many coming out of Toronto...

Ryan Nelsen hiring must be a ruse

What's fascinating is that this may be the first time in Ryan's career he's had any real hostility directed towards him. Right now he potentially faces a big backlash in the UK, especially from QPR fans, scepticism verging on ridicule in Toronto, and unease in New Zealand about what it means for the All Whites.

That last one could turn nastier for him if he doesn't handle it right. What he appears to forget is that it isn't just about him and NZF, it's also about the wider NZ footballing community and the NZ public. If he appears to not care about the impact of his international retirement in that context then he could really damage his reputation here.

I really hope this move works out for him but it's a massive challenge.

My favourite was:

"At this point, we will say to Nelsen what we say to every new coach through the perpetually spinning turnstiles at this club: 'All the very best of luck; and probably best to rent for a while'."

Same.  I used that in the front page news item but someone beat me to it with the article (and the sack race picture was better than my revolving door)

That was a different situation though, Lia wasn't eligible, and Dura is.
Yeah but nobody knew that at the time. Even though in this case Dura is its not going to be announced until its done. Its kind of like bragging about a new job youve landed before youve signed the contract. Knowing our luck FIFA will change their eligibility rules next month...

This is just bizarre. Should've been eased in with an Assistant coaching role with an experienced head coach. Instead, he's the head coach and they've got an assistant who has only coached college teams. Strange. Puts Nelsen in a horrible position and could ruin his coaching career before it's even started.

A note though: Toronto have been consistently crap and they still get 18k average crowds! Not bad.

Oh man, James Dean must be on holiday or something. I am literally peeing myself with excitement waiting to hear how he rationalises this one.

"The more I think about it the more bizarre this gets.  He has literally no experience or qualification for this job" - JD after NZF appointed Fred de Jong as High Performance Manager.

Come on JD, gimme some of that sugar baby. Oooh yeah.

He just needs to be half a success in Toronto and he will be a legend.Toronto really does suck at sport.

Sure is going to be fun watching this unfold.

Totally understand the angst from the Toronto fans. Sounds like they have just had a merry go round of managers and now they have one appointed with no experience, who might not be available until after the season starts.

He will have a big test getting the fans faith but he has the support of the GM, so hopefully it works out for him.

Not true. Anyone who reads the regs properly wouldn't have know Lia wasn't eligible.

My thoughts exactly. In fact I've always been a little bit unsure of Nelsen's relationship to NZF and football in NZ in general. There's no denying that when he's played he's played his heart out but too often he made up bogus injuries to avoid the trips. And yes I know all that stuff everyone says about playing in the EPL being more important and his club not being happy and blah blah blah but in the media he's constantly presented as the shining saviour of the All Whites and it's just not true. He plays when he wants to, not every game. And sure matches against the Solomon Islands and Vanuata aren't glamourous but if you really want to play in a World Cup you should damn well help your team qualify. New Zealand football partly lacks credibility because of the way overseas players like Nelsen pick and choose the games they want to play. It's fine to skip friendlies, I don't care about that but if you want to play football for you country you should play every competitive game you can. I wonder what sort of message that attitude sends to young guys in the squad - what if Reid, Smith, Wood, Rojas, Barbarouses, Payne, Howieson are all playing in Europe in a few years and they all decide to fake injuries to avoid playing OFC qualifiers because this great NZ football legend made it seem okay to do that - what then?
Now the way he's handling this whole situation just makes him look like like a d*ck - to us and to QPR fans.

I have no problem with how Nelsen has handled himself in the past.

Obviously I would like him to have played more, but at the same time, I respect the fact that he has "possibly" put himself, his family and career first (no actual direct evidence of this to my knowledge). Why risk injury (which can heavily impact income with playing bonuses etc and potential future contracts) by playing in meaningless games that are not properly organised only to return to your club tired and jet lagged to hell.

Professional athletes all around the world pick and choose what tournaments to play in (football is not quite as open), whether it be track and field, golf, tennis etc etc.

When the games have mattered he's shown up and played his heart out.

Good luck to him.

but he didn't play in the OFCNC for instance - hardly 'meaningless' games considering our performance there meant missing out on the confeds cup. Like I said, I understand not playing freindlies

McGlinchey played for Scotland U20 and U21 teams, and Tommy Smith played for England U17 World Cup. If they were good enough and got called up for the A teams, they'd never have been anywhere near the All Whites.

Thats what i meant. The media went with it too because of that. Durante has even said there might be issues around being on the bench for the Socceroos

I would be intrigued as to why. I recall with Marco, he didn't have to pick sides until he got on the pitch for NZ in a 'meaningful' game and then he was tied for sure. Had he stayed on the bench, he would still be elligible for Chile?

Yes. The eligibility rules don't say anything about being on the bench, you are only locked in if you play a part in the game on the field.

Im just looking forward to it. Dura will be as close to a replacement for Nelsen as we could hope for. Id have to say hes probably one of the greatest Aussie defenders in recent history to have never played for his country, i dont think thats an exaggeration. Always thought he was a lot better than McKain and North when they played here.
