I think he does give a rats about NZ football but perhaps not the mafia that run it

"I haven’t had a chance to talk to the coach or the chairman of New Zealand Football, and I'll be talking to them very soon," said Nelsen.

This. It's not like the All Whites are playing tomorrow. If NZF really needs several months worth of advance warning then all that shows is how two dimensional and short sighted their plans are.

Being longstanding captain I would have thought a 10 minute call from him to NZF was nothing more than common courtesy to be honest

There's a difference between leadership qualities and footballing skill. None of us (I assume) know these players personally, so the decision on who is more suitable for captain should be left up to those that do. Reid is the better footballer, but those in charge at NZF obviously think Smith is a better leader.

Yep.

perhaps. Winnie wasn't available when Smith was made captain.

I think Reid really doesn't like losing- plus he was the captain at his Danish club side right?

Could have been bloody busy! Has he flown to Canada or the press conference was in London? I imagine he's been going back and forth with a lot of things, and I'm sure he wasn't intending to slight them, just that in terms of training for a game with Tottenham, organising a new job and press with both lots of managers etc etc and a bit of sleep he's probably had a lot on his plate.

what a load of BS fellas. You captain your country and are in an important year - you would give them a heads up/discussion that you were (planning to) retire. If you don't then cleary it's beacuse you dont care about playing for your country.

I wouldn't say he doesn't care, that's a little harsh. But a 5 minute phone call is just common courtesy

Agree completely with you Feverish.

Maybe he didn't call because nothing was concrete until the announcement was made. The guy has far more important things to worry about and I would be surprised if NZF didn't know he was thinking about retiring/career change.

Permalink Permalink

Inclined to agree with Feverish about this.

Less than professional by Nelsen, who normally prides himself on being just that.

This move raises massive questions over his international future in a very important year for the All Whites.

Angst.  Honking even.  But you've got to look after #1 I spose.

Permalink Permalink

If he didn't he certainly shouldve told NZF IMO. But players were hinting at his retirement in CHCH anyway so...

I think the depth at centre back is absolutely fine. Reid, Smith, Sigmund, Boxall. Dura I dunno. I'm in two minds about that.

Andy Boyens FTW?

Regardless of how it he communicated it, I'll be gutted if he is out for Nov games. Even if NZF just said look skip March (we really should be ok without him there) and any friendlies please just show up for 2 weekends in Oct/Nov even if he's not playing club stuff. The WC is just so important and he is that important to the team for mine.

How can he stay match fit if he's not playing?

Sooner or later we were going to have to get use to him not being around, its just come earlier than a lot of us (all of us) had hoped.

The only saving grace is, atleast he plays in a position we are reasonably well stocked in, if her were a midfielder, we'd be even more screwed!!

With Durante coming in, I'm comfortable with our options in defence, but I will miss Nelsen.

Hopefully he takes a couple NZ bos with him to Toronto.

We assume Durante will be coming in. Nothing is a given until he says 'I'm elligible and want to be picked'

And then he gets picked in a competitive game. Until then, I won't believe it,I'll be waiting for Australia to pick him just so we can't have him.

Why are people funny about Andrew Durante playing for NZ but fine with Tommy Smith and Michael McGlinchey doing the same?

Permalink Permalink

I think it's because Smith and MacGlinchey never accepted a call up to their other national teams, Durante did.

To be fair, Smith and Mac just were not good enough.

I don't think we can't be too precious about this. One of the major reasons (apart from Ryan) why the all whites performed so well at the world cup were Reid, Smith and to a lesser extent Fallon (who however got them there). No one has a bad thing to say about them now apart from the mugs who bash Fallon( from what I can see due to his religious beliefs). All played for other countries at age group level and it is fair to say those countries were probably their first choice (if they had got picked or had qualified for the world cup). Durante has done his time in Wellington and I believe is applying for citizenship - He appears an honourable man and if he believes his heart is here, that is more then good enough for me.

I never said I was funny about it. What I said was effectively that Durante himself has not said 'I want to play for NZ'. If he does then welcome with open arms. Until then, count chickens hack yada yada yada...

Heard a quote from Ben Sigmund on the news saying he believes Durante is interested. But agree about waiting to hear it from Durante.

We dont know that Nelsen is officially out of this years games yet either.

ryan wasn't going to last much longer anyway.  he rarely trains and is constantly on the verge of breaking down permanently.

Sadly, this. More likely is that he just doesn't care that he has dropped NZF in it but I think a good chunk of the latter as well.

The more I read about this the more it reflects really poorly on Nelsen. According to his mouthpiece (I mean journalist) he was able to speak to him last night but he hasn't been able to get hold of Herbert or Van Hattum. I wonder if he asked how hard he had tried? Pretty confident than Herbert or people within NZF would have been pretty keen to get a call from him yesterday.

Maybe he sent a fax to headquarters but no one was there again as they are still on their two month holidays? Remember we don't have a good track record with communication over Christmas

You would probably find him not coming out with it has more to do with what happened when Lia did

That was a different situation though, Lia wasn't eligible, and Dura is.

Wouldn't announcing that you want to retire from playing and accepting a coaching position indirectly advise NZF that you won't be available to play international football. Surely NZF wouldn't be stupid enough to A. wonder whether he still wants to play or B. even select him considering he is no longer playing at club level.

I agree that he should have told them out of courtesy but the whole appointment to Toronto appears to have been a whirlwind process and was probably number 1 on his mind.

I think the issue is that NZF have no idea when he is going to be retiring, as they have no clue what the negotiations between TFC and QPR are like. If Nelsen plays out the season at QPR, he will most likely be available for the March qualifiers, but if he is moving to TFC for the start of their season he won't be available in March.

Should have been a matter of Courtesy really..... Yes a busy time but how long would this have taken...

"Hi Ricki, Ryan here

I have had an opportunity come up to Manage in the MLS, and unfortunately will result in bringing forward retirement effective immediately.

At the Airport right now about to get on a plane but will be in touch soon.

Cheers"

About a minute including dialling I reckon.
