Sorry I read AJ's piece wrong. I thought he was comparing Durante to McKain and North as the best not to have played for Australia. As you were.
Grumpy old bastard alert
Why are people funny about Andrew Durante playing for NZ but fine with Tommy Smith and Michael McGlinchey doing the same?
And people say I am angsty...
I'm disappointed in how Nelsen has gone about this. He's still under contract at QPR.
Given how important "professionalism" is to him, he should see out his contract there before he does anything else.
He's part of QPR's starting XI, and has been their captain for quite a few games.

From Stuff:
Nelsen fails to go gracefully

So is QPR's 0-0 draw with Spurs last night the worst possible outcome for Toronto fans wanting to know when they will get Nelsen? It does nothing to move QPR towards a more certain outcome for the season - whether that be relegation or survival. But it probably does serve to underline just how important Ryan is to them defensively. Can't see Redknapp letting him go anytime soon.
If he is still playing in March the big question is will he fly half-way round the world for the WC qualifiers? If the only reason he is still playing is to help QPR's relegation battle then it would seem highly unlikely - you can just imagine Redknapp (and QPR fans) reaction if he did. And yet it will be an official FIFA window. NZF could force him to come but maybe it's smarter for them to play the long game:
Off field World Cup role possible for Nelsen
Another fascinating scenario - QPR's relegation battle goes down to the wire and Nelsen is forced to stay until late in the season. In the meantime Toronto start their season badly. Could Ryan be sacked by Toronto without ever actually arriving in Toronto??
Yet another fascinating scenario - if Ryan was sacked by Toronto at any point before November (not an impossibility given their track record with managers) could he possibly still play in the WC inter-continental play-offs??
Anyway, probably just an academic discussion because Wynton Rufer thinks he's going to be a success at Toronto and you cannot get a better endorsement than that!

Nelson fails to go gracefully.
What a load of bollocks. Obviously with no rugger being played all these sports journalists are wading in to comment on football matters when they have little grasp of what they are talking about. Nelsen has not said he has retired. He is contracted to QPR until June. Harry says he wants to keep him so until he changes his mind Nelsen stays with QPR. If he stays Nelsen then can say well I am playing the March WC qualifiers for NZ...and you can't stop me.
So at the moment nothing has changed. There is no retirement, no need to ring NZF because the status quo exists. Nelsen does not need to contact NZF until things change. It is really a non story because the only thing that is happening is that Nelsen will go and coach Toronto when he finishes at QPR. Everything else is just speculation. Once QPR decides when he can go then Nelsen can inform the relevant parties.

austin10 - I agree with that piece about 'Nelsen fails to go gracefully'. He may have his reasons but Nelsen has made Herbert and NZF look like dicks over the last week and he has acted with a lack of professionalism (NZF have also done well to play a reasonably straight bat). It's a massive year for the AW's and it's not just NZF who want to know what he's doing but the whole NZ footballing public. Take a look back over the comments in this thread - I'm not the only one who thinks that.

Dan Girard, football writer for the Toronto Star, talks with Tony Veitch about the local reaction to Ryan Nelsen's appointment as head coach at Toronto FC.

Does anyone know if Nelsen has any coaching qualifications? Just wondering if there are any restrictions in the MLS on coaching badges, as they have in a lot of leagues including the A League (currently A licence and Pro by 2015/16)

He has no qualifications but it doesn't matter because he once read a book on football tactics and he has been thinking about coaching a lot.
Besides, he's Ryan-fucking-Nelsen, so all you haterz can just back the fuck up.
And definitely don't listen to the whinging of any of those pussy Canucks who think appointing Ryan Nelsen sends a poor message that you don't need qualifications to be a head coach.

Wow Ryan, even Forbes magazine (Information for the World's Business Leaders) wants to put the boot in:
Kevin Payne's Maverick Appointment of Nelsen Unnecessary and Inexplicable
Ouch. I bet Ryan reads Forbes as well. Double ouch.

Toronto to win the league and all his doubters heads to simply implode due to the awesome magnatiude of what he achieved whilst still playing and saving QPR from relegation and helping NZ qualify for the World Cup again, whilst managing them also...although thats just on the quiet.
You read it here first!
He seems to be doing ok so far as Toronto boss without being there:
http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/football/serie-a/news/article/-/15851333/qprs-nelsen-makes-julio-cesar-first-signing-as-toronto-fc-boss/
Toronto FC have completed their first signing under new head coach Ryan Nelsen.
34-year old Brazilian defense-minded midfielder Julio Cesar has signed with the Reds from Sporting Kansas City to begin an offseason of many changes at the BMO Field.
Its important that Toronto FC becomes a more difficult team to play against this year. Julio Cesar will be an important part of the backbone of our team in the middle of the field, Toronto FC President and General Manager Kevin Payne said in a statement.
Hes a tough, experienced, committed player who was a big part of Sporting Kansas Citys success over the past two years, and were very pleased he will be a part of TFC this season.
Julio Cesar, who arrived in MLS in 2011, has extensive experience in Europe following stints with Real Madrid, AC Milan, Benfica, Bolton, Olympiakos and Valladolid.
I thought he had signed QPR team-mate and keeper Julio Cesar! which would have been massive for the club..
Same here when I saw the headline!
Wonder if he will have a word to Harry about getting Hoillet on loan.
Don't see Hoillet going to MLS any time soon...could be proven wrong though - that'd be a massive signing.
Redknapp confirming that Nelly will be leaving end of Feb beginning of march....think i better head down to loftus rd to see him play before he leaves...
Nelly to play last game next week against city. Due in Toronto 1st Feb now................
Toronto fans will be happier with that!

The superdraft just happened - I don't really know what it is but apparently Toronto didn't do too badly
a.haak

That was last week. Supplementary draft wasint he last couple of days and they picked up the RobSled.
Nik Keown-Robson.
Ryan Nelsen has retired from international football. RadioLIVE can reveal the All Whites skipper rang Coach Ricki Herbert at 1pm today.
Always on the cards.
Great player, great leader.....all the best with your coaching career Ryan
