For good reason.

Neither do the Blackburn fans.

thought it was crazy and stupid from all parties when i first saw it, but el grap's post explains the reasons perfectly, win/win/win really

This still is mentioned in the confirmed transfers on the BBC site.
I hope he gets some game time, will be interesting to see what he does at the end of the six months if he doesn't secure a spot at spurs.
Perhaps he could join Winston at the Hammers for their return to the big time.

really?! this probably wouldn't be too surprising considering the odd stuff going on at rovers

He did use an injury fake to keep him out of the All Whites for a time after the previous coaching fall out so if it works once ...

Is this 100 per cent confirmed now?

If he can get on the park this is fantastic news for nelson and nz football. A kiwi playing in Europe and at the highest level in the premiership. Hopefully he can prove his worth and get the extra year. If not and provided he is injury free I am sure he will get a premiership gig next year. Sure beats playing in the championship where I am sure Blackburn is heading next year.

I'm making an educated guess here but surely Nelson is the oldest outfield player signed by spurs since the premiership began?

Quite an achievement if he is

Gallas is also 34 and older by a few months.

Dunno about since the premiership began, I outgrew my anorak about 40 years ago.

Still no official word on the Rovers website . . . mention is made of their new signings, but nothing of Ryan "being released". And his profile is still on the first team page.

Transfer rules hard to sort. Free agents can generally be signed any time BUT if released from contract when window closed have to wait until opens to sign elsewhere. Hence prob reason nelsen was released (reportedly) just before window closed. I am figuring bc he was released during the window he can sign any time and therefore clubs under no pressure now to announce immediately. But remains somewhat murkyMarius Lacatus2012-02-01 22:38:00

comments by Blackburn fans on the below article are interesting - they think they have been lied to about the injury, and Kean has not been playing him due to some clause in his contract that would mean they could get rid of him cheaply if he hadn't played??

kind of corroborates with a Spurs fan next to me at work who reckons 'arry knows something and that he will have a miraculous recovery.  - doesn't explain the reported trip home to see allblacks doctors though.

Prettymuch this. I also highly doubt that even if New Zealand did have the best doctors, that they would be working for the rugby union.

Yeah I saw a report (TV3 I think) which went along the lines of "this sort of injury is way more common in rugby so therefore the best thing to do was to come back to NZ and consult with experts here". Why they couldn't consult an English doctor who has treated rugby injuries wasn't asked...Blair2012-02-02 03:10:04

I've been thinking about this and I was wondering if Redknapp sees Nelsen as a potential coach given his experience and leadership abilities. The 6 month contract might not only be a trial as a player but also to see how he fits into the squad and how he goes mentoring young players through. Of course, Redknapp himself might not be there next season but I thought it might have been a factor in the signing at least.

Also, does anyone else get really annoyed when they see his name spelt Ryan NelsOn? I've read it in a few comments under articles etc and even one headline. It really grinds my gears

That blog's gold. I particularly liked it when he said that Nelsen's performance against Italy at the WC was: "arguably the best single player performance of the whole tournament"

I just hope we get to see him pull on a Nix shirt one day!

interesting piece here from TV3 saying that he was about to head to DC for a player/assistant coach role.

DC's current coach is Ben Olsen who happened to play for DC when Ryan was there.  makes sense really.
Surely he could be our assistant coach and player..
