Good rap from commentators albeit ageist but Harry wanted experience.

The New Zealand defender's first start since August and managed 90 minutes with apparent ease. Read the game well with some key interventions.

Seemed like he played pretty well. Disappointing though that Tottenham earned a nil nil draw after thrashing Newcastle last week.

Disappointing result, but can't ask for more than a clean sheet from Ryan. Good stuff

Michael Dawson had words of praise for Ryan Nelsen after his fellow central defender's full debut at Stevenage on Sunday.

Ryan, who joined us on transfer deadline day in January, didn't put a foot wrong as we fought out an FA Cup fifth round stalemate at the Lamex Stadium.

He lined-up in a new three-man central defence alongside Michael and Younes Kaboul as Harry Redknapp employed wing-backs in a 5-3-2 system.

Ryan won every aerial duel and was there when needed when Stevenage threatened in the second half, alert to follow in and clear the rebound after Carlo Cudicini spilled Joel Byrom's shot.

"I thought Ryan was fantastic," said Michael, who captained the side at Stevenage.

"We changed the formation a little, played myself, Younes and Ryan, he played in the middle and he was outstanding.

"He won everything in the air, was strong and played really well. He showed all his experience in what was a real test for us against a big, physical team."

Look out for Michael's full thoughts in Dawson's Diary on Spurs Xtra tomorrow - plus Ryan reflects on his debut here on tottenhamhotspur.com.

We'll also have the post-match views of Michael, Ryan, Louis Saha and Danny Rose on Spurs TV Online.

Wow, singlehandedly coaching the All Whites is a good feat from someone who can't play.

Bryce Johns shocking revelation - centre back can't pass like Beckham/run like Messi.

Ryan is on the sub's bench today against Man Utd!!! Always thought Harry rested him last weekend so he'd  have him available for this one.

Tottenham starting line-up: Friedel; Walker Kaboul King Assou-Ekotto; Lennon Livermore Sandro Modric; Adebayor Saha
Subs: Cudicini, Dos Santos, Defoe, Dawson, Kranjcar, Rose, Nelsen

Manchester United starting line-up: De Gea; Jones, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Nani Carrick Scholes Young; Rooney Welbeck
Subs: Amos, Anderson, Giggs, Park. Hernandez. Fabio, Rafael

Oh dear, Nelsen commits the foul that leads to a Stevenage penalty. 80 min to redeem himself now...

Was mentioned on the Guardian commentary feed

What I meant was, why did they neglect to mention the goal assist since it's a pro-Nelsen article?

I think it was actually a fail on the part of the Guardian minute-by-minute commentator. The match report said Bale played the ball, which makes more sense

Nelsen started today, the match was abandoned at 1 all just before half time when Fabrice Muamba from Bolton collapsed, and is seriously ill

Since Nelsen joined Spurs, Arsenal have reigned in a 13 point gap and jumped into third.

Well done Nellie

Three for me, and two for them.

To be fair though, Spurs to my knowledge have not lost a game he has played in.

Something for Harry to think about.

Nothing to do with Ryan- he hasn't been allowed to start any league games (Only a couple of Cup games).
I watched this game and Spur's central defence were very average with Stoke's 70th min. goal coming when Spur's defence failed to deal with a Jermaine Pennant free-kick that Robert Huth flicked on for Jerome to poke home from point-blank range.

I thought Spur's defence would have benefited from Ryan being in there from the beginning using his great ability to read play and organize the whole defence.

So any "stats-spotters" able to tell us where this sits in NZ Football, a first of any kind? First opening goal in an FA Cup by an All White capt?
