Full 90 in a 3-2 win over Assyriska. Picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute. Ljungskile are in 5th but have no chance of reaching the promotion playoffs with only 1 game remaining.

How did they go from winning the league to 'can't make the playoffs' in only 7 days - during which time they won a game?

Edit: Oh wait - 7 days and a year... haha.

There was an article about Old on the stuff Website last week with an interview:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/73080927/former-all-w...

Last year he had a top season with Ljungskile, just one point from promotion. They finished third, only to lose their playoff to the third-placed first-division club.

"Expectations were high for us to go up. This year in a nutshell it's been a frustrating, mid-table average season."

A few players were poached and Old said the writing was on the wall after about 10 games despite a run of four wins. Injuries impacted and he said a small club like his with a tight, limited squad can't afford setbacks.

Old has another year to run on his Swedish contract and he is 90 percent likely to stay. He has an exit clause if he should find another club which would allow him to go on a free transfer.

Yeah he signed a 2 year deal with GAIS in November.

Stephen Old is now one of three Kiwis at GAIS in Gothenburg in Sweden's second tier.

GAIS have been playing in the Swedish Cup but have been knocked out after losing all three matches over the last two weeks.

Stephen Old played in two of the three:

Played the full 90 in the Cup game against Helsingborg from the top flight:

http://us.soccerway.com/matches/2016/02/20/sweden/...

And also the full game in one other game against Orebro from the top flight:

http://us.soccerway.com/matches/2016/02/27/sweden/...

GAIS have been using the Swedish Cup tournament to trial players and don't seem to be worrying about the results.

They've lost them all and conceded lots of goals.

In Sweden, the Cup is played initially as a pre-season tournament with teams in groups somewhat like the UEFA Champions League.

The knock-out rounds come later in the season.

The league season for GAIS starts Saturday 2 April

Dan Keat featured for 60 minutes in one Swedish Cup game; Craig Henderson hasn't debuted for GAIS yet.

Steven has been made the captain for GAIS this season: (I love that GAIS' twitter banner pic is a green NZ flag!)

Could he be an outside chance for AWs in the probable absence of Reid and Smith?

Maybe we should make that the new flag - something old, something new...

Deserves a look in for sure. The club is pretty big and look a decent shot at promotion. Sweden is decent quality having the 3 amigos in the top flight would be very handy especially old considering the lack of smithy and reid.

Pretty cool to have three New Zealanders at the same club. Better sign Chris James too!

Both Old and Keat are first team regulars this season. Old scored a goal back in May.

GAIS are 10th on the table.

Morecambe have announced the signing of New Zealand international Steven Old on a one year contract subject to international clearance.

The 31-year-old centre back, who has 17 international caps, has most recently been playing in Sweden.

Maybe now he'll be on the radar

is it too big a shout to bring him back into the AW fold (should be fine for games like the Solomons etc)?  Playing matches in a competitive league whose quality is better the MLS reserves, U23 friendly bs and most Asian leagues.  Has Hudson ever watched him play live?

I was more surprised that Dan Keat was never able to force his way back in to the All Whites than Steven Old.

Impressive header, around 0:47. Nutmegged in the lead-up to Boro's winner.

You know we belong together...

Steven Old was never the fastest mover. I'd pick Dane Ingham over him myself. Or even Moses Dire.

Just noticed Steven has mad his way onto a Fifa game for the first time in 7 years! His last appearance was in Fifa 11 when he was at Kilmarnock.

Glad he is back in England with a bit of experience behind him and a new family. Wish him well and maybe we will see him in the All Whites again at some stage.
