I have no real idea of relative quality of China One (second tier) compared to A-League. You seem well-informed. What is your opinion?

Just watched my first ever China One match via pptv.com (it's all in Chinese so won't bother posting pc links, but WEF has a good step by step set up for smart phones).

Chengdu vs Chongqing - both teams struggling near the drop zone.

Verdict: Sub A-League

If I see anymore Chongqing games (or Shijiazhuang) I'll post on here or Killen thread.

Old provides an assist for striker Johnny  (transliteration Jin-ni) Lambert to open the scoring for Junhao against Guizhou Zhicheng, but the game ends in a 1-1 draw.

2-2 last night vs Guangdong. Got on the scoresheet but for the wrong reasons. OG but nothing I could have done about it.

Congrats @brighty9 on the call up! Just shows never to give up! Put in the good word for me while you're there. ????

I'm not sure whether there would be a place for Old in the World Cup Squad. sounds like he'd like to be considered.

I suppose we could maybe consider him for RB. I think there was a time where he and Herbert were close and Herbert thought he was going to be one of the best players NZ produced.

There was but that was nearly 10 years ago and look who we've found/produced in the meantime.

I think it is a race between old and bright to see how many clubs they can play for and how many countries they can play in during their football OE.

A good gig for him in Sweden's second tier - the same league Dan Keat's Falkenberg won last year.
Ljungskile have three Americans and two English players, so he'll have team mates he can converse with.

How old is he now? (Very I know, but...) Any chance of him kick starting his career again? Seemed fairly decent for the Olympic team last team I remember watching him and then nothing from him for ages and only lower league football in Britain and China.

Ahh edit: 28 it says in the article.

Too late for a come back?

Not too late but he would be wanting to put in some good performances in front of the right people PDQ to resurrect what chance he may have.

Wow what an end to that game! Boys battled right to the end. Great to get the goal but 3 points is the most important thing! #LSK

Taken from Twitter @stevendold

Looks like Old is having a good run in the Superettan at the moment - looks to be scoring too! Worth a shout d'ya reckon?

Had a look at the Superettan table and his team seem to be doing well, and he looks to be playing regularly...

I don't know about his chances of making the AW's anywhere in the near future, but after not being in the first team for the first portion of the Superettan season, he's put up some good numbers.

Played 19 times, scored 4 goals, and helped his side to the top of the league with 3 games to go** (Hammarby and GIF Sundsvall both have a game in hand, and are only 2 points behind).

Ljungskile are also unbeaten in 22 competitive matches. An excellent season so far, and roughly coinciding with Old's elevation to regular first team member. If Ljungskile can hold off their nearest challengers over the coming month or so, Old could be plying his trade in the Allsvenskan next season. Hopefully Dan Keat and Falkenberg can stay up too!

If he keeps going the way he is, he will be playing in the Swedish top division next year... where would that place him comparatively to what we have in AW currently?

Perhaps he's finally matured as a player and got a bit more agg in him?

Technically skilled but was prone to brain fades and a bit soft.

He's a strange one. I thought he held his own well for the All Whites versus a v good Socceroos at Craven Cottage all those years ago. Then he just kind of went backwards somehow.

Struck me as a confidence footballer. If his tail was up, he played well. A couple of poor performances and he shrunk.

When at the Phoenix you had to feel sorry for him. He always looked under the pump and i think you're right about his confidence, he really took a knock while here. Good on him for finding work elsewhere though and making a living in the game.

Well, if Dan Keat can't get a call up over the likes of the unattached Tim Payne, Old may possibly end up in the same boat?

Sweden is a very good place for footballers. Technically pretty good and strong. Not amongst the elite competition such as the Premier League, Bundesliga, or La Liga in Europe, but a very very handy league. I hope Keat and even Old get a look in for the next AW's squads. Especially now that Hudson is calling out for defenders to throw their hat's in the ring.

he was not technically skilled! He was a decent athlete, strong, quite quick, good in the air. But fairly clumsy on the ball, needing to develop his reading of the game and not a distributor.

Permalink Permalink

Poetic license in full swing here. Technically skilled? Not a chance. Able to put in a few reducers and clear his lines? At times yes. Should he make future AW's squads? Not if we are serious about making Russia.

Three for me, and two for them.

I agree, if he is getting regular game time for Ljungskile, and Hudson is after defenders he may be worth a punt.

Would have thought the games against China and Thailand would've been a good litmus test.

Also, for the record I never said Old was technically skilled, was merely referring to the country in which he plays, and the footballing culture they have.

I'm only new to this forum but it's quite amusing reading some of these comments.

Steven Old is currently a regular starter in a European league where it's looking likely that his team will be promoted (couple of games left but currently sitting top of the league) from the Superettan to the top division where teams can qualify for the champions league  - Malmo recently had a decent win against Olympiacos. I agree that at times he was exposed in the A-league, but that was years ago now. He's in a professional footballing environment day in day out. As a staunch All Whites supporter it's slightly embarrassing when selectors opt for 'amateur' players plying their trade in the, what's it called, the NZFC?

Check out this link to some of Stevens most recent highlights. An assist and goal - don't think his technical ability is an issue.

Won't be surprised to see Hudson give him a shot once they're over the next round of international friendlies - or should we continue to select players from our amateur league OR players that currently ply their trade for the well renowned club 'unattached'?

Not bagging Steven but he's had some pretty pants clubs since getting boned by the Nix.  If he ends up being a starter in Sweden's top flight, yes look at him as a squad player.  Still some way behind the likes of Reid, Smith and co as things stand.

Played the full 90 in a 2-1 win this morning against bottom of the league Husqvarna to put Ljungskile top of the league for now at least.

I too have not seen Old play for ages but I would not necessarily right him off. Players mature at different rates.....defenders often don't reach their prime until into their late 20's early 30's. Old had been playing pro/semipro football for many years now. Chances are that he has matured as a footballer. It would not bother me if Hudson had a look at him at some stage. He could be a useful squad player for the AW's

Permalink Permalink

yeah, to be fair to him he played for us at a time when we were a complete rabble . He was playing alongside the likes of ODor and Cleberson - even Pique would struggle. Still, he always looked a bit gangly and uncoordinated to me ; but then so does Per Mertesacker!

Full 90 in a 3-2 win over Assyriska. Picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute. Ljungskile are in 5th but have no chance of reaching the promotion playoffs with only 1 game remaining.

How did they go from winning the league to 'can't make the playoffs' in only 7 days - during which time they won a game?

Edit: Oh wait - 7 days and a year... haha.
