"Mate, this dude scores some goals. That’s Oldy’s fourth of the season, the NZ defender putting the icing on the cake of a 2-0 win away at Grimsby Town, meaning a clean sheet to boot. Just an all-around great day at the office then. Morecambe also beat Yeovil Town 4-3 in their last game of 2017, coming from 2-0 down and then from 3-2 down with six minutes left in a bloody thriller. Those six points in nine days give them a handy buffer above the relegation zone.

Old’s goal came in the 41st minute to make it 2-0 at the half which was the way it finished. Typical Steven Old goal: header from a set piece. On this occasion Kevin Ellison’s glancing header had looped up and dropped off the crossbar, allowing a fairly easy nod in on the rebound past a bemused keeper for Steve. Ellison already had his goal, he scored the first."

Very unfortunate name

Stopped by Grimsby a year ago as I was visiting relatives. Definitely not the nicest place, but Cleethorpes (the coastal area of Grimsby) isn't too bad. I've seen worse towns in England.

Apart from the unfortunate name its not that bad, meany places in NZ are at about the same level.  Luton, Bradford, Port Talbot, loads of London, and Merthyr Tydfil are about the biggest sharkters I've encountered during my 10+ years of living here.  Luton easily being No. 1

And England's Poet Laureate John Betjeman thought the same (also quoted by David Brent in "The Office"):

"Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn’t fit for humans now,
There isn’t grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!

Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
Those air -conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
Tinned minds, tinned breath...."

David Brent: "You don't solve town planning problems by dropping bombs all over the place."

Old has featured in 28 (27 starts) of Morecombe's 29 league matches this season.

His four goals makes him the side's third equal highest goalscorer after Ellison (7 goals), Lang (5 goals), equal with striker McGurk (4 goals).

Morecombe lie 19th on the 24 team League Two table, four points above the relegation zone.

They play Mansfield Town tomorrow morning NZT.

A 1-1 draw for Morecambe against Carlisle, is probably enough to confirm their survival in League Two.

They have been pretty solid of late for a team low on the table (20th) with 5 draws and a loss.

Barnet (43 games & 37 points & - 25 GD) currently occupy the last relegation spot, and would need 3 wins in their last 3 games to overtake Morecambe (42 games & 44 points & -13 GD), plus need Morecambe to get only 1 point from their last 4 games. Highly unlikely.

A slogfest 46 game season in League Two.

Old played full 90 mins against Carlisle. He remains the team's 3rd highest goal scorer for the season.

Well Old and his team mates now have it all to play to starve off relegation!

Morecambe lose 1-0 at Crewe Alexandra (Old full 90 mins).

Desperate Barnet win 2-0 at home over Newport County.

Barnet (2 games left) close to within 4 points of Morecambe (3 games to play).

Next week Morecambe host Barnet in an all high stakes match!

Morecambe still favourites to stay up with game in hand - but lose next week and pressure will then be on last 2 matches for sure.

Morecambe draw 0-0 at home verus Cambridge United (Old full 90 mins)

Morecambe (2 games to play), are now 5 points clear of Barnet (2 games left).

The clash between the two teams this weekend, remains an all high stakes game!

In their last games Morecambe have to travel to Coventry who are chasing a playoff spot, whilst Barnet have much easier task of hosting already relegated Chesterfield.

So yes still remains the real threat Morecambe can be relegated - which will be all too real, if they lose to Barnet this weekend.

Morecambe seemingly in big trouble losing 0-1 at home to Barnet. Old full 90 mins.

1 game left each in the season. Morecambe ahead by only 2 pts now. Barnet after 2 consecutive wins are on a roll, host already relegated Chesterfield.

Morecambe have to travel to Coventry, who are chasing a promotion playoff spot.

Few weeks ago Morecambe looked very safe, now relegation looks very very possible.

HT.

0-0 between Coventry & Morecambe.

Barnet 1 Chesterfield 0.

So at the moment Morecambe would only stay up on GD. They need to win or draw - if Barnet also win.

So some last day season drama. Beauty of a competition with pro/rel.

Barnet (GD -19) do their best to stay up, by beating already relegated Chesterfield 3-0.

However Morecambe (GD -15) manage a 0-0 draw at Coventry, to finish equal on points with Barnet. But Barnet are relegated on GD!

Coventry had it all to play as well, with their promotion playoff spot not guaranteed. Hopefully not a contrived result, as all they needed also was a draw to seal their spot in the playoffs!

Crowd nearly 16,000 at Coventry. Old played 90 mins - biggest crowd he would have been in front for some time.

For AWs with Reid, M Boxall & Smith all likely to be unavailable (plus Dura retired) - Old might be a chance of going to India if they want an older pro, to be with the kids at the back. I guess Themi fills that job now.
