NZManu, that comment is from the Villa game (i read it last week) game and its actually not really true if you read the fan forums (there was plenty of criticism of is villa performance but there was even more brutal criticism of tomkins and lots of people saying dont rush judgments). its journo's licence.

as for today, he could have done much better to prevent goal 2, but then gabbidon got beaten in the air twice leading to goals and upson scored an oggy.

reading the forum some of the west ham fans are generally angry and blaming everybody including Reid but others are saying he did quite well, stood up to the physical contest and brought the ball out quite well under pressure.

pretty random and unreasonable pulling quotes off forums, bc only one person's opinion, so as a point of balance here is another from KUMB ...

Positives;

Dyer actually looked quite lively and was getting into some good positions
Berrera had an impressive debut and was at the centre of all our good attacks in the first half
Piq had a good game and holds the ball up far better then Cole, just a shame he lacks a finish
Faubert and Ilunga did ok as did Reid when he come on.

he might be in for a tough season - even if he does win the fans over

I do think he has what ti takes - hopefully he'll be able to keep things in perspective and maintain a reasonable level of confidence in his own ability

I thought he did ok generally. Didnt look out of place. He was already appealing for handball for that goal, it came off the arm of the other forward, but wasnt sighted by the ref.

Agree will be a learning season for him for sure, good luck.

I went to the game yesterday, and our Winnie did ok in a schizophrenic performance from West Ham.  He nearly scored with about his first touch (volley straight at the keeper), enjoyed the physical side of the game (had a bit of verbals with both Elmander and Davis after challenges), wanted the ball a lot and generally passed it pretty well.

Defensively, I thought he let Elmander get away from him for the second goal, and he might have done a bit better for the third one.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

The Daily Mirror

Winston Reid says West Ham can kick-start their season in the Carling Cup against Oxford tonight.

The New Zealand international has started life in the Barclays Premier League on the wrong foot with losses to Aston Villa and Bolton.

Reid, 22, said: We havent had the best start to the season - two games and no points. Its most important that we beat Oxford.

We have to go out to win all these Cup games - its a chance to win a trophy."

Manager Avram Grant said the Hammers must tighten up at the back and Manuel Da Costa and summer signing Tal Ben Haim could play the back tonight. Matthew Upson is doubtful after Being whacked in the face on Saturday.

Mexican winger Pablo Barrera says West Ham have enough quality to get over their tough start - even with games against Manchester United and Chelsea coming up.

We have good players so I believe in the team. In the first half against Bolton we showed we can be better than the result suggests, he said.

The scoreline didnt reflect what happened on the pitch and Im sure in the coming weeks we will be better.

Oxford midfielder Mitchell Cole, meanwhile, wants to heap more misery on the Hammers.

Cole played at the clubs academy but he was later released after suffering a series of injury problems...

Cole said: "Leaving West Ham was the worst thing that ever happened to me and it took me a while to get over it.

"Everybody has the ambition to play at the highest level and I think I have the ability to do that. Going back there is my chance to show what I can do.

"They have not had the best of starts to the season and we thrashed Bristol Rovers in the last round so we have nothing to lose.

that could be good or bad sign. definitely not a first XI

But as a young player you'd think this kind of match would be more suited to Reid, against a weaker opposition.

yea not quite sure what it means, could be that hes being kept fresh for the weekend with the injury to upson, or perhaps he was simply overlooked.
BBC preview for the game claimed he was expected to start so not sure what the deal was.

I'm pretty sure he was just rested. Having BenHaim and Tomkins in the starting XI indicates to me they weren't taking the game too seriously. Upson got injured against Bolton  so they won't want to risk Reid and have both of them out for the upcoming matches against Man U and Chelsea.

Lucky boy based on the result, shows they aren't any better without him

Surely Reid would have been a better option than that useless Spector at RB. The only thing I can think of is that Spector has more experience in playing the top teams, but going by todays effort he won't be in the team much longer.

Manuel Da Costa was on the bench today and he is rumoured to be heading off on loan (don't understand why - thats another argument) but it should mean that Reid will come into the side ahead of James Tomkins.

Just read on the West Ham boards that Grant has said he left Winston out because of injury. Havent read it officially but if its true i dont expect its too serious.

you would have thought if he was going to leave him out otherwise then he would have involved him in the carling cup squad at the very least during the week

Hope he does well, but I don't hold out much hope that he can keep a regular place.

Got a lot of work to do to get in the starting line up now, Lars will start for sure didn't get enough chances with us after doing his shoulder but looked a handy player.
Come on Winston

He probably will just have to wait it out and when he gets his chance, take it as best he can

I think the best part about it is Reid might now be seen as a centre back.Luis Garcia2010-09-02 10:19:14

Reid is just a youngster. If he keeps working hard his time will come. He's only 21/22.....that very young for a Premier league central defender. As Grant said "one day he will be a very good player" He just need to bide his time and he could have a long career in the PL.

Hello, I am in total agreeance with you on Winston Reid. I found the ceo of NZFA Michael Glading's statement that Reid "should repay the All Whites..." quite inappropriate and rude. Reid has stated on numerous occasions that he wishes to "play for the All Whites as much as possible", but I also think Winston should speak with our most respected talisman, Ryan Nelsen-He's the one to guide him and also consult with Avram Grant and Ricki Herbert, they are the only 3 that matter.

Glading has just got a BIG MOUTH....Instead he should have said..."It would be nice for all overseas kiwi players' to return home to play in the 'friendlies', after all it is NOT HIM who pays their salaries-Their clubs' do.

Personally I think these 'friendlies' are ill-timed-The PL and A-League have begun-Bloody inconvenience to be honest

He's a professional, paid a lot of money to play. It is a worry he is NOT playing, even if the team is not playing that well at present.

West Ham are woeful at the moment... so hopefully when Grant looks to make changes he looks in Reids direction.

Reid played 90 minutes for the reserves last night beating Everton 1-0 away.
Cleared one off the line, got booked for a tackle

Played at centreback with Tomkins, forming a "formidable partnership" according to the report on the Official Website.
