With all the support from Auckland for football. Air New Zealand Night Rider service should double our stadium crowd. $29.00 each way and $20 night at Downtown BackPackers.  Oh big pocket money for night in Courtenay Place.

If somebody told me 6 years ago (ie, pre-Phoenix) that a Wellington-Auckland NPC semi final and a regular season A-League match were on at the Stadium on the same weekend and the football match attracted 40-50% more spectators, I would've wondered what drugs they are on.

Ok, it may be saying more about the demise of the NPC, but getting close to 10k in times when all codes are struggling to get bums on seats is still pretty good going.

I know, I know, its serious!

Read somewhere today but cannot find the link that the TV rating after three rounds last season was 64K even with the big MV harry ratings.... over all they averaged over the year including finals at 65K...
If we add the NZ ratings [ I don't know these] to our the Australia ratings the figures are quite impressive ...

From Throng for 21 September tv ratings for Sky Sports (Phoenix vs Brisbane):

Most watched on SKY Sport 1

  1. Intl Netball: 73,460 (4:10pm – 5:30pm)
  2. Intl Netball Post Game: 71,790 (5:30pm – 5:50pm)
  3. Intl Netball Pre Game: 35,870 (5:55pm – 6:05pm)
  4. Intl Netball Pre Game: 33,260 (3:30pm – 4:10pm)

Most watched on SKY Sport 2

  1. Hyundai A-League: 32,040 (4:30pm – 6:30pm)
  2. Intl Rugby Bledisloe Cup Replay: 23,640 (12:00pm – 1:55pm)
  3. PGA European Tour: 21,690 (6:30pm – 10:25pm)

As mentioned previously, our first game vs Sydney got 31,770. Maybe a bit of a surprise that our third game of the season would be the same viewership as our opening game (and vs Del Piero), but probably people are watching the telly more on Sunday afternoons than Saturday evenings.

Our Round 2 match isn't mentioned on their report for that day (14 October) - looks like we would have been on Sky Sports 3 ? which they don't seem to publish figures on.

32,000 at the same time 73,000 were watching the netball.

Our numbers are generally better per head of population than the Aus ones by a fair margin, apart from the Sydney vs Newcastle anomaly.

I still don't get netball. I mean, it's young women jumping around in short skirts, so I should like it, but I just can't stomach more than 5 seconds of it.

Perhaps something to do with the (I think) far larger take up of pay tv here than over there - no anti-syphoning laws in NZ.

None of the other games are on the Throng website unfortunately.

Maybe I'll email them and ask if they have those figures / how we can get hold of them.

I emailed throng the other day as to why they don't show ratings for all sky sports channels... here is the reply I got.

Hi George, Thanks for your email. Unfortunately, not all of the channels are included in the data we receive. Typically, if a show rates inside the top 100 of the day, it will be published Cheers Regan Cunliffe Throng Media

ditto, I haven't watched any netball for years, in fact it only registers as having been played when I see the results on stuff - note I don't bother reading the article. Rugby is fast moving into the netball category.

I saw an interview with some netball coach on the news the other night and she said "we need to do the basics right" and I thought "what isn't a basic in netball?"

As I see it netball is boring because the players movements are limited to certain parts of the court based on their position, they can't move with the ball, they can't shoot from distance, they can't basically do anything to break up the monotony of catch-pass-shoot-intercept. Basketball is the same basic concept but far more watchable, because players from any position can move anywhere on the court, they can move with the ball, and they can shoot from anywhere. There's so much more unpredictability and tactics make a difference to outcomes in a rather obvious way. Basically it's just way more engaging to watch because of that.

IIRC netball was an interpretation of early basketball rules developed to make it more acceptable for turn of the century women. They had to make it non-contact and try to limit running because it was "unladylike" - the whole damn sport is based on Victorian notions of gender roles!

I think a lot of people are afraid of criticising netball cos they think they will seem anti women's sports, but the sport itself sucks because its based on sexist notions of what women should do. I'd far rather watch women's basketball than netball. But because netball is effectively a women's only sport it gets more attention than women's competitions of sports which are played by men and women. That might be societies inherent sexism at play in itself but it shouldn't mean that people think they have to like the crap that is netball

I heard somewhere (probably radio sport) that some netball players were getting paid $100k a year to play in the ANZ Championship.  I was shocked.  Basketball is a million times better than netball, more skill better to watch etc.

Netball is pretty much a commonwealth sport that will only be massivily important to 4 countries.

It's a shame our media don't give our football, hockey girls more coverage.

Netball and basketball are both horrendous, though I do agree, basketball is probably marginally better.  Netball is all quick passing etc, and then they get to under the basket and nobody is really allowed to move until the ball is thrown?!  It's sort of like if that was football, as soon as a player gets the ball in the box everyone has to stand back and wait till they've had their shot!

FoxSports ratings are ONLY for AUS 5 mainland State capital cities.

In NZ, HAL matches are broadcast on SKY Sport (NZ).

Also viewers from Gosford, Newcastle & the areas around these regions will not be included in the FoxSports ratings numbers so we’d expect the published ratings for matches involving: CCM, NUJ & NIX to always be lower than the actual viewing numbers.

Round 1:

Melbourne vs Heart - 129, 000
Wellington vs Sydney - 109, 000
Western Sydney vs Central Coast - 124, 000
Newcastle vs Adelaide - 77, 000
Perth vs Brisbane - 102, 000

Round 2:

Adelaide vs Western Sydney - 90, 000
Sydney vs Newcastle - 156, 000
Brisbane vs Melbourne - 101, 000
Heart vs Wellington - 73, 000
Central Coast vs Perth - 78, 000

Round 3

Melbourne vs Adelaide - 102, 000
Newcastle vs Central Coast - 78, 000
Western Sydney vs Sydney - 102, 000
Wellington vs Brisbane - 58, 000
Perth vs Heart - 67, 000

Round 4 :

Newcastle vs Melbourne - 125, 000
Adelaide vs Wellington -  71, 000
Brisbane vs Western Sydney - 100, 000
Heart vs Central Coast -  57, 000
Sydney vs Perth -  100, 000

Round 5

Western Sydney vs Heart -
Central Coast vs Sydney -
Perth vs Newcastle -
Brisbane vs Adelaide -
Melbourne vs Wellington -

The average TV ratings after four rounds is 95, 000 per match.

The average last season across all matches and the finals is 65, 000, which was up 40% on the previous year.

Meaning Hal 6 average ratings … 46, 500 plus a 40% increase is 18, 500 thus 65, 000.

Increase this year to date 95, 000 – 65, 000 is 30, 000 or a 46% increase from Hal 7.

But taken together the Hal 6 figure was 46, 500 today’s average is 95, 000 or a 104% increase within 18 months… that is impressive growth by any measure….

Was posted on the MV forum last night not sure if it applied to NZ as well on Throng...

[quote]
What is disappointing is that The Age's Green Guide has a rating section for free to air and Pay TV, but for some reason as of this week they have ommited any of the A-League ratings and just stated (*excludes sporting events). Why would they do that ? Just because the A-League ratings having been coming in at # 1 and littered in their top 10 shows - they decide to publish "excluding sport"". Talk about misleading, and inaccurate.
