Don't normally worry about crowd avg. But have to say the HAL is doing quite well, compared to other leagues around the world. Who would have thought that having a 7000 odd crowd avg would have been disappointing to NZ football fans.

Ratings plummeting since ADP hysteria has worn off & big bash league kicked in. Will be interesting to see how NRL & AFL pre season matches will effect ratings... no tennis this week .

Trying to make some sense out of the rating…. Where football stands … the BB & ONI… and maybe the other football codes.
There was an article the other day indicating that in the 18 to 34 age bracket Football matched cricket and against all odds if you compare media, history, etc. Not wishing to beat around the bush cricket gets in newspapers both paper and online maybe 12 to 1 in articles and space. On commercial my guest the ration is time wise maybe 15 to 1 and FTV TV anyone’s guess but close to 5, 000 to one time wise maybe more. Then there is the ABC and its radio summer of cricket …
Two aspects of the 18 to 34 age group…. They have the lowest payTV ownership and are prone to going out more than people over 34… especially people over 50… The going out is often more in summer……
Where I am going with this is the younger demographic support football …. But the over 50 there is limited people watching and limited room for growth…..
Our ratings have fallen since the BB started, our crowds have increased. BB & OBI have had both falling but still well ahead of football…
The recent WI V Aust ODI on 9
The 16 to 39 demographic was:
Australia V West Indies Game 4 Session 2, Newtwork 9 243, 000 [ie 116 to 39 audience]
Only 24% of the total audience was under 39 years of age. This is the key age demographic for Football.
Football does not have strong enough figures in the 50+ year age group yet to keep ratings going at a steady pace all year. Whereas the 50 + audience seem to watch and their numbers do not seem to vary a great deal, whereas the 18 to 39 age bracket experiences percentage changes given the day and time of year.
What does this all mean … WOW that is a difficult question but …. Two things stand out for me …. First the traditional codes cricket, AFL, NRL & RU have significance over 50 + viewers and they appear to watch and just don’t turn off….. Football is poorly represented in the over 50 + demographic….. Second Football does have significance numbers in the under 39..
A difficult thing is many studies vary in their age brackets i.e 18 to 34 & 18 to 39 … and over 50’s and over 54. My guess is it is the under 30 where we are becoming very strong.

Just a snap shot of Friday night’s Fox sports Ratings. Remember Friday night only. IMO this is the kinda night you can judge how far Football has come…
RL for a pre season match … just wow… AFL very strong… the big losers were cricket and RU…
The super competition has the best rugby players in the world playing. The A-League is the nowhere near the top league in Asia never mine the world.. The NRL & AFL are the world’s best competition but as I said very strong rating for pre-season matches.
The biggest loser was cricket as the lowest rating it had was when it had competition from the football codes … its peak audience was the last session when it had no competition… The A-League match was by two out of form teams outside the top six…. Not sure what the AFL had on as some teams seem to be mentioned twice …

Great article on the Roar today...
http://www.theroar.com.au/2013/04/03/record-a-league-crowds-and-tv-numbers-but-job-not-done-yet/
The A-League has set a new all-time season attendance record, as well as scoring its highest average attendance since 2007-2008, off the back of the entrance of the Western Sydney Wanderers and the marvelous marquee troika.
According to figures released by Football Federation Australia today, in the 2012-2013 season attendances shot up 18%, to a season total of 1.666 million, while the average regular season crowd number of 12,388 has only been beaten in the 2006-2007 (12,911) and 2007-2008 (14,610) seasons.
TV audiences have also increased – to close to 80,000 viewers per game, also an all-time record, while the cumulative TV audience passed 10 million for the first time.
These are good signs for the fledgling competition, particularly after the up and down experience it has endured over its nine-year history.
The increases have to be put down to the arrival of the Wanderers and the shot in the arm provided by Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey and Shinji Ono.
Apart from energising a long marginalized football region, the Wanderers have been Australian sport’s cinderella story over the past 8-12 months.
Before the eventual flowing football and premiership win, the fanatical support has been staggering.
The Wanderers even received a crowd of nearly 4000 to a pre-season trial against lowly Nepean FC back in July 2012.
It has grown and grown from there, with a packed and pumping Parramatta Stadium every week a sight to behold.
The wider impact of Del Piero, Heskey and Ono cannot be underestimated.
Apart from their performances on the field, which have been stellar and attracted bigger crowds and many of those who had never been to A-League game before, the trio generated talkability, merchandise sales, increased media attention and even global interest. These three stars have helped put the A-League on the world map, as well as the local one, and it couldn’t haven’t happened at a more critical time.
According to these figures- Del Piero has helped boost Sydney FC’s average crowd attendance by nearly 7000, up to 18,633, the highest average the Sky Blues have ever had.
Heskey, who has re-signed for the 2013/24 A-League season, added another 1200 people for the Jets, pushing them to 13,389, also the highest the club has ever had.
But the injection provided by the marquees was not just felt by the clubs fielding them, but by their opponents and at stadiums across the country.
Adelaide United’s average crowd this season compared with 2011-2012 went up 1000, the Mariners were up 400 and Melbourne Victory 4000. Brisbane Roar and Perth Glory also had slight increases, but average attendances were just down in Wellington and for the Heart.
These last two clubs are proof that while the A-League is on a high, there is still much work to be done.
Financial stability for all the clubs remains a huge issue. Most lose millions every year. The Mariners teeter on survival every 12 months. The Wanderers are owned by FFA, which is a conflict of interest.
FFA needs to continue to partner with the A-League clubs to ensure the competition can become profitable so the clubs can start to break even, and eventually, be profitable.
The rise in crowds and interest must be built up, not neglected like after the first three years of the A-League, so that the competition continues to grow and prosper.
The FFA is doing a good job with its digital channels and with engagement through platforms such as Twitter. This must continue.
The deal to have a live Friday night game every round on SBS, as well as delayed finals and Socceroo matches, is another massive important step forward.
While ratings on Fox Sports have grown this season, they are still dwarfed by the NRL and AFL. For example, last weekend’s pay TV ratings show that football still has a long way to go. According to these numbers – the only football game to score in the top ten sporting broadcasts of the week was the Socceroos vs Oman match, which received 187,000 viewers.
This was beaten by five NRL games and three AFL matches, with no A-League game being watched by more than 170,000 people. The top rating sport broadcast of the week was the Sharks vs the Dragons with 343,000 viewers.
Live free-to-air coverage is completely vital for the A-League’s growth.
Pay TV reaches a limited audience and without a sound free-to-air component, there is a glass ceiling. You only need to look at rugby union to see that.
Still, season 2012-2013 has been one of success and celebration, and those at FFA headquarters can afford a smile today.
Recent figures by IBISWorld – confirm that football in this country is on the up.
The A-League is currently ahead of rugby union in terms of the amount of revenue in generates (including ticket sales, sponsorships, TV rights and merchandise), $95.2 million compared with $70.1 million, but the world game is still behind Cricket Australia and Tennis Australia.
Critically though, comparing figures from 1995-96 to 2011-12, football is growing. It is now third highest in terms of unique spectators, behind Aussie Rules and Rugby League, but ahead of cricket, rugby union and tennis.
The signs are promising. Let the good times roll.

A-League grand final tops pay TV ratings
THE most successful season in A-League history was capped off with a record TV audience for Sunday's grand final.
Some 297,000 people tuned in to watch Western Sydney and Central Coast, while 42,102 people attended the match at Allianz Stadium.
Wanderers coach Tony Popovic believes the sport has now earned the respect of other codes in Australia.
"We've certainly arrived and I'm sure they're looking over their shoulders to see what we're doing and why we've improved so much," Popovic said yesterday.
"But we've all got a part to play, all codes can fit in. There is room for everyone and it's nice we're creating our own space and interest.
"I think on the field the game has improved. I think it's a better spectacle, the quality of football is better. And I think off the field the way the clubs are run is improving, the fan base is improving."
The 2012-13 season broke all sorts of records:
IT was the highest-rating A-League season with an average audience of 81,000. The previous best was 70,000 in 2007-08;
AVERAGE audiences were up 23 per cent from last season;
GAMES were watched by more than 2.8 million viewers;
IT had the highest-rating regular-season game ever - the 164,000 who watched the round-two clash between Sydney FC and Newcastle);
IT had the three highest-rating rounds in A-League history - 109,000 (rd 1), 105,000 (rd 2) and 103,000 (rd 5).
Football Federation Australia boss David Gallop said the sport had plenty of growth left.
"The TV audience was up 39 per cent from last year, so that's encouraging," he said.
"We are entering new media arrangements next year, where we will be covered by free-to-air and pay-television. That's an enormous growth opportunity, not only because nearly 100 per cent of households have free-to-air television, but it will also be a subscription drive for pay-television."
Fox Sports chief executive Patrick Delany said the 296,000 audience was the icing on a breakthrough season.
"We are delighted," Delany said. "It was up against the AFL and NRL and it was a very good number, as was the entire season.
"The final was fabulous and the ratings number was one thing. But for the ground to be near capacity with the two sets of fans creating that atmosphere was another."
Sydney continues to bask in the glow of the Wanderers' remarkable season and today Parramatta City Council hosts a street parade in their honour.
The club's Red and Black Bloc fan group will feature, joining the 12.30pm celebratory parade from the Parramatta CBD to Prince Alfred Park.Popovic believes the RBB has raised the bar when it comes to supporting its club and attending games.
"A new club has come in and our fans have played a huge part in elevating interest," Popovic said.
"Hopefully we'll just get bigger and better and I think all clubs will hopefully be stronger and their fan base will try and rival ours."

Just shows that A-League can go head to head with the other codes....no need for us to try and cram the season into the egg ball off season. We should be looking for more games.....the game is on a roll and now everyone has to wait more than five months for the next season to start. Off season is way way too long IMO.
Midfielder thanks for all the stats you provided over the season.
