wonder what the percentage of people for the nix game bought tickets but got scared away by the sudden shit weather?

Small kiddies is understandable, but if I'd shelled out close to $30 (inc ticketek rort) for a ticket I'd go along*.  Regardless I am very disappointed with this turnout on our first game of the season.

Bunch of Wgtn b******d pussies.

We've got people like C-Diddy making real sacrifices to get to the game (including keeping his pants on in G4L's car) from Wherthewhuckami up north, Kiwi Hatter dragging himself off his deathbed to drink beer and stand fully clothed in the FZ (another sacrifice take note).  60 Nelsonians enduring a jaunt over the Cook Strait to see their lad NOT score and I read in 442 that one brave soul came over from Wainuiomata.

Wellingtonians - you disgust me, you could almost be Aucklanders with your apathy.  Sometimes I wish I was from Canterbury (FFS!)

it was Smithy.  I'd prefer not to be lumped in with him.

WSW crowd was only a few hundred below Melbourne Heart's first ever game.

Wellingtonians are notoriously bad for walking up at the last minute and buying a ticket, we wait to see what the weatehr is like before we turn up. The last minute storm probably killed a good 3-4k people bothering. I got to the station at 6:40pm on saturday and the queue for tickets was massive.

Yep, can't disagree with you, but:

  • We have had a very stable off-season, with some great pre-season form.
  • We have recruited well
  • We have the most affordable ticket prices (gate or season) in a long time
  • We have had a reasonable PR build up (and a good one via the Dom Post)
  • Our first game had ADP as a draw card (yes - limited reach to most but it does generate publicity and curiosity)
There's very little to complain about leading up to the game.
What's going against this?
  • The weather (and that we're a bunch of pussies)
  • Wgtn is in more of a recession than many other places
  • We only turn up for finals footy?
If any of these are significant factors then we might as well pack football in for Wgtn - shift it to ChCh.  They seem to be a bit more like Melbournians and support their sports (of all codes).

Bums on seats or lucrative sponsorship/tv deals = saleable/sustainable.

Last year was 10k to break even which we didn't.  Our opening game pulls in a large-ish crowd which then tapers off and picks up again when we get close to finals footy.

Not only the best crowd the best weekend for TV rating... in Australia alone an average of 108, 000 per match...

Good article on the roar ... quotes much of the above release...

http://www.theroar.com.au/2012/10/08/the-a-leagues-record-breaking-first-week/

A media release from the FFA earlier today brought nothing but good news for those of us that love football – informing us of the record-breaking first week of the season that has just passed.

The previous records for aggregate attendance, as well as both TV and digital viewing numbers were all shattered; and to me, it’s clear that the star power the A-League generated in the off-season through a few brilliant signings has paid immediate dividends.

I’m the last person that would ever get involved in a code war; I’m a Rabbitohs member, a devoted Hawks fan and hell, I’ve even been getting into the ITM Cup for the last couple of years (go Taranaki!).

But as someone that has adored football his entire life and watched it be kicked around by supporters of other codes who’ve yet to grasp that you can like more than one sport, this is some sweet vindication.

When Sydney signed Alessandro Del Piero, there was nothing but joy from football lovers…and yet oddly enough, there was an equal amount of cynicism from others I spoke to that don’t particular care for the round ball game.

A Rugby League forum I post on (which has a football sub-forum which is home to many knowledgeable fans that appreciate more than one sport) saw the anti-football zealots out in force, claiming that “nobody’s ever heard of this guy” and that he was washed-up, over the hill etc.

Sydney may not have won on the weekend, but that’s not the point. Aside from the fact that we never win in Wellington, Del Piero was the best player in a losing team by an absolute mile. But even if he wasn’t, the importance of his signing goes well beyond his considerable ability on the pitch.

To quote the aforementioned press release; “This season the Hyundai A-League will be seen in territories across the globe with live matches taken throughout Asia including Hong Kong, Singapore, Myanmar, in Italy via Mediaset and the USA with both One World Sport and Fox Soccer Channel while weekly highlights will be broadcast in the UK through Sky Sports.”

To provide some perspective – there were Juventus fans having their morning coffee, reading about Silvio Berluscone’s latest indiscretion and settling in to watch Sydney play Wellington.

To even imagine that Italians would have been watching our poxy little A-League six months ago would have seen far-fetched. It was probably as confusing a thought as these new viewers felt on Saturday, trying to work out how Terry McFlynn is paid to play football.

There were over 107,000 views on the A-League and corresponding club websites across the weekend, up 25% from last year’s record. This number will continue to grow with the network of global television viewers.

But even in our own backyard, things are picking up. 108,000 was the average audience for a game this weekend, absolutely destroying the round one figures from last year by a cool 38%. Whether it’s Del Piero, Heskey or the presence of a new team that actually has fans, people are starting to take notice.

Oh and finally, the games themselves. 93,500 people turned up to the five fixtures, beating the old record by around 6,000 people.

With a new TV deal looming for the A-League, this is kind of positive press that we needed to continue the growth of our domestic league, and football in Australia as a whole.

The more money that can be generated in the next deal may provide the clubs with more marquee slots, a higher salary cap and perhaps down the line, room for a second professional tier.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. For now, it’s just great that the yield is finally matching the quality of the product.

I’ve been saying since season one that every year, the crowds have gotten worse, but the standard of play has gotten better. I guess this is the year the scales finally tip.

And as Ben Buckley said, we’re looking for more crowd records to be broken when Sydney host Newcastle on Sunday. Short of Del Piero and Heskey being ruled out through coincidental mishaps (as we’ve seen in the famous ‘Softball’ episode of The Simpsons, it is possible), I think the 33,458 against the Victory in 2008 could be under a real threat.

But probably not the 80,295 against Beckham’s LA Galaxy.

Well played!
However any fleeting thoughts of being a Mainlander are only irrational red (& black) mist moments which pass.  I spent many years down there and don't have any desire to be back any time soon (or later).  As for being a tard.  Well - that's almost as bad as calling someone a Dorklander.

Wellington till I die (or get a better job offer elsewhere).

They are payTV numbers and an AFL match gets from 130K to about 200K ...
FTA TV is different and both the NRL & AFL rate close to one million per game...

Hard News

Just a couple of articles on payTV rating in Australia..... hope it gives some guidance as to why these figures are so impressive given the AFL has a 1.25 million dollar media deal..

Super Rugby and the A-League over the last few seasons more often than not have the A-League winning ... both articles looks at our grand final weekend 2011 & 2012...

The second link is a typical week ..... it shows the top 100 payTV shows ... I have tried to show all the sporting shows by pushing out their viewers ...

However to average over 100K [especially if you consider relative media coverage] is quite high...

http://www.theroar.com.au/2012/04/23/a-league-strong-but-afl-continues-tv-ratings-dominance/

In a weekend of no live pay TV NRL coverage, the Friday night St Kilda vs Fremantle game was the top ratings sports event, with 271,000 national viewers.

The Saturday Adelaide vs GWS Giants game was watched by 194,000 viewers, while West Coast Eagles vs Hawthorn received 160,000 viewers.

Also on Saturday the Waratahs vs Rebels match was watched 149,000 viewers, a rare entry this season for Australian Super Rugby TV figures to crack the 100,000 viewer mark.

Ratings for Super Rugby have suffered in 2012 thanks to the lack of a strong and successful Australian side like the title-winning Queensland Reds of last year.

The AFL has continued to rate well on Fox Sports, sharing top billing throughout the season with the NRL.

Each week the NRL and AFL have dominated the highest ratings spots.

Yesterday the A-League grand final was watched by an audience of 200,600, a decent figure when compared to the 2011 and 2010 grand finals.

But it was not the top-rating sports program on pay TV on Sunday, with the Geelong vs Richmond and Melbourne vs Bulldogs matches pulling in 224,100 and 209,500 each respectively.

In 2011 the A-league grand final was watched by 204,000 viewers while the 2010 edition had an audience of 176,000.

Yesterday the grand final post-game show watched by 156,700 and the pre-game show was watched by 52,400

Worth noting the Rd 2 crowd was the highest ever when MV has not played ..

This round 81,832 total. next is 70,322 back in season 2

On the Rd 1 it was the first time we've ever had 5 fixtures drawing over 10,000+ for each. It's also safe to assume it's the highest drawing A-League weekend of all time.

Here are the rounds across the years which have had each team draw higher than the 5-figure mark. There have been nine occasions in total
Note: all of them are from the 8 team era bar last weekend.

It really does point to signs that this year will be a positive one for crowds.
