I was a bit disappointed that there was not a brief mention on Monday's Sports Tonight.

But in reality Steve-O and others rugby, rugby, rugby etc will still prevail.  It's still the sport that we can claim some reasonably consistent winning results so of course people will be drawn to that (that said I'm not at all interested in it now).

A few more 10k+ crowds at ROF, Nix clinching play-offs, AWs going to SA WC next year...then you'll see TV3 sit up and take note and maybe even that stalte monolith as well.

What I am used to on a Monday news sports bulletin is a brief round up of the weekend's games - showing the goals, maybe a quick interview with the manager / goalscorer, and then putting the league table on screen to show the current state of play. All of this could probably be done in about 2 minutes.

But we're not the UK. NZ sports news targets sports popular to NZers. Which means rugby, rugby, rugby, netball, cricket, rowing, golf and motorsport. If the news only focused on what people from another country typically watched, only people from that other country would watch it. What the UK has in terms of sports news has absolutely nothing to do with what NZ does. robbwatson2009-08-25 12:13:56

What I am saying is that I do NOT expect football to take the place of rugby, or perhaps even cricket in terms of news coverage here, but all of these other turgid sports that get covered really get on my nerves, particularly when there is coverage of stuff from other countries, but the A-League gets missed out!

Rugby is your national sport here, fair enough, it just seems that the news reports here try to cover far too many minority sports that I have never seen mentioned in my life at home in 20+ years of watching sports bulletins!

I accept football is more of a minority here but I refuse to accept it's more of a minority than a number of the sports I have mentioned that seem to get regular coverage.

Football rules the sports coverage 9 times out of 10 in the UK, just like rugby does here, but rugby still gets some coverage.

The point I am making is that football, and especially A-League football, gets next to NO coverage here when it is quite clear that football is gaining popularity in this country. It merits more coverage, simple as that.

Are hockey and basketball really more popular than football?

From memory most of the sports segment wasn't actually rugby - it was things like Federra playing in a nothing tennis tournament, yachting in the Med (Zzzzzz) ........ It's a bit weak to say because the Nix game was on in the Sunday late evening news it shouldn't be on the next night in the main news. Steve-O is right - the Monday night sports segment should be a round-up of the weekends A-league results, with Nix highlights, an update of League table and a bit of analysis i.e. same approach as applied to NRL albeit with coverage intensity increasing to NRL levels as A-League popularity increases.

I do agree with you - I just meant that I don't see the relevancy of other markets to the NZ market.

As for the point in bold, I agree 100%. Considering current events surrounding the All Whites, and the rise of the Phoenix, and the high participation numbers of football, it deserves way more coverage.

I was looking for any coverage from the weekend and there was none. No a-league whatsoever, just the odd EPL byte.

Disappointing. "best start to the season ever" for example, is clearly a newsworthy headline, even if they show it with a 10 sec clip of the goals and nothing else.

I agree with the sentiment here, that while I accept rugby, cricket and netball deserve the most coverage, some coverage of football is warranted - people are interested in it, even if they won't watch whole games.

There's not a lot to be done, spleen-venting aside, though.

My point in mentioning other markets was just really to illustrate how minority sports are dealt with elsewhere, in bigger markets. That being that they barely rate a mention on the news, but if you want to watch them or hear about them, there will likely be something on Sky Sports at some point, rather than taking up airtime on the mainstream news programmes.

Tiger Woods and Roger Federa are once in a lifetime athletes and will naturally attract media attention. And so they should. I don't care what race they are, they are phenominal and I want to hear about them.

I think many people on this site are deluded in terms of what sports (and sports people) are unpopular....

I "lol" when I hear people wondering why they show live NRL but not live A-League (Incidently I think they should be playing A-league....). The NRL is one of the highest followed sporting competitions in this country. Where as, as much as it pains me too say, outside Wellington, not many people gives a rats arse about the a-league - especially when it doesn't involve Wellington.

I think the media coverage of the a-league has too improve but I also think people on hear think that people around the country care about the a-league a lot more than they actually do.

You've got to remember that the TV stations don't just broadcast to Wellington.....

Yes, but the NRL has had twenty 5 years (including early prime time free-to-air coverage) to establish a brand and an identity with clubs and players.  Sky have consistently under-mined the ability for the A-league to do this.

Of course NRL deserves more coverage it has the following (and a huge amount of SKY owners dollars) invested in it, but the only reason it has got where it is is because it has been allowed to grow that following through live TV coverage... I mean, live Toyota Cup between a couple of Sydney clubs on a Saturday night, how many people do we actually think watch that if it's not the Warriors kids. ?

I agree about the Toyota Cup, but I did say NRL not Toyata Cup. Also I agree that SKY have been undermining the a-league. I'm more stating that the argument "but you show NRL games that don't involve the warriors" is irrelevant.

On the free to air news bullitens I have no problem with the amount of football that is showed either. I think the problem is the type.... we need more A-League, Less Europe (or should I say EPL). Although outside Wellington my perception is that people care more about the EPL than they do the A-league so the media is just reflecting this.

"Should we suggest that the Phoenix should play on the Saturday late night just to get their media report on the Sunday 6pm news and Sunday Newspaper?????"

If you want to see more Phoenix on free to air TV then frankly, yes. The Sunday 5pm kick-off SERIOUSLY impacts Phoenix match coverage and analysis.

"Game didn't finish until 6.50pm though?"

The sports news ended at 18:52 on Sunday. The Phoenix item went to air at 18:50:07.

"I'm pretty sure I knew the All Blacks score by Monday night though? Is that still 'news'?"

The All Blacks played on Saturday night, and 3news had a match report and analysis on Sunday night. There was no story on the result on Monday, our story was about All Blacks playing Air NZ Cup this weekend.

"What I am used to on a Monday news sports bulletin is a brief round up of the weekend's games - showing the goals, maybe a quick interview with the manager / goalscorer, and then putting the league table on screen to show the current state of play. All of this could probably be done in about 2 minutes."

I'm afraid this is unlikely to happen at any stage in the near future. We have 10 minutes to deliver sports news on any weekday, longer on the weekends. I would never be allowed 1/5 of the bulletin to deliver A-League news. That's what the A-League highlights show is for.

"Are hockey and basketball really more popular than football?"

I guarantee you football gets more coverage on our news than either of these sports.

"The point I am making is that football, and especially A-League football, gets next to NO coverage here when it is quite clear that football is gaining popularity in this country. It merits more coverage, simple as that. "

Part of the problem is the A-League is not the only show in town. Most New Zealanders would prefer to hear how their team is going in the English Premiership, than how the Phoenix are going in the A-League. On Sunday, we ran a one minute story wrapping up the EPL, followed by 40 seconds on the Phoenix. Football received more coverage than the NRL on Sunday.

"The NRL is one of the highest followed sporting competitions in this country. Where as, as much as it pains me too say, outside Wellington, not many people gives a rats arse about the a-league - especially when it doesn't involve Wellington."

Guys I am a huge supporter of NZ Football and the Phoenix and always endeavour to provide regular coverage, but it is unrealistic to expect the amount of stories and analysis you are after on free to air television.

The only certainty is that coverage reflects results. The Warriors are the best example of this, and their coverage has declined dramatically since the start of the season. If the Phoenix REGULARLY win games and find themselves in finals contention, they will earn regular coverage.

It's a fair enough reply, naturally I am bit blinkered so I still disagree to an extent though

I hope their comes a day when New Zealanders prefer to find out how the Phoenix have gone over their EPL team - I am more bothered about Phoenix than my EPL team (Everton) because I am here in New Zealand and can support them by actually going along to games or watching them at reasonable hours of the day!

Of course Hibs in the SPL come first - why no SPL highlights on TV3 eh???

Forget about all the highlights then but 30 seconds of highlights from the Phoenix game plus 30 seconds of an interview with Herbert isn't much to ask is it? I'm not even sure I have heard Ricki's voice! 1-1 away in Brisbane is a good result I reckon.

As for your point Gangsta! my rants are about NRL being on 2 channels at once. I don't think it's unreasonable to have the football on one channel and NRL on the other.

That would be ideal in a world where everyone got an even chance. But ultimately sky is looking at the bottom line and while I think its disgusting that there not showing Live sport because of highlights I have no problem with them showing 2 league matches because inevitably it will bring them more dollars.

Ultimately Sky is a business and business' are about making money.

This isn't a dig at anyone on here so please dont take it like that but I think a few people get caught up in a bit of a yellow fever bubble . People think that because Yellow Fever is a thriving football community we must be the tip of the iceberg, I would probably suggest that we are the iceberg.
Football has a phenomenal participation rate amongts youngsters and has a growing profile on television but as has been said before more people care about the EPL than the A-League so that takes the coverage football deserves. Think Bartercard Cup v NRL. (even before the Warriors were in it)
As for the comment about why do we see Federer? Are you kidding me! Im with Gangsta on this one, Woods, Fed, Bolt, Armstrong are all once in a lifetime atheletes and are of interest to the general community. Yachting has got good coverage here for years, this has always been slightly perplexing to me but the money in it in New Zealand and for New Zealand is without question.
As Gourdie said, we start winning we will get the coverage.
Though in saying all that I think we could do a bit more in gaining profile outside of Wellington, both the Breakers and the Warriors have their own hour on Radio Sport, I realise we have the Phoenix Hour which is great but is a Wellington thing. Miles Davis is doing his football hour every Tuesday but from the times I have listened to that it has been mainly about domestic football and even more of an opportunity for Miles to talk crap, why aren't the Phoenix getting more into that. Leo does a spot every Friday morning on the breakfast show but for the great player Leo is I wouldn't call him charismatic. We need a Steve Price type figure who can be the face/voice of the club and we need him in wide exposure media (im thinking Radio Sport here) Both Miles Davis and Kent Johns are big football people and would give the Phoenix an opportunity if they went looking for it I reckon.

Well I'm not arsed about Federer, Woods, or anyone else when they are not doing much in particular. Fair enough with Bolt breaking records and all, but Federer winning a match in a non major tournament? Er, so what? Tiger Woods the same - seems he gets special treatment because he has a Kiwi caddie!

As I have said earlier in this thread, Sky should really get Interactive like in the UK - thus BOTH NRL games could be on one channel and you select which one you want to watch by pressing the red button and choosing. Seems fairly clear that there is not enough room on the schedules for everything that everyone wants to see so it seems a no brainer to me?

MD did maybe 15-20 mins on the Phoenix today, including having Chris Greenacre on the show.

According to Sparc in 2007/08 there were 227,000 adults actively participating in football. I understand (can't put my hands on stats) that there are also more juniors playing football than rugby.

Looks like a pretty big iceberg to me.

I agree coverage will improve with results - both the Nix and All Whites. However I also think there is a bit of media inertia to up the coverage, on a consistent basis, of sports other than rugby.

Keep fighting the good fight Gourdie.

This isn't a dig at anyone on here so please dont take it like that but I think a few people get caught up in a bit of a yellow fever bubble . People think that because Yellow Fever is a thriving football community we must be the tip of the iceberg, I would probably suggest that we are the iceberg.

Spot on.

This forum is a fantastic way for football fans to express their opinions with like minded individuals, but let me assure you we are still very much in the minorty.

As I said, only results will change this.

And there must be others on top of that, like me, who don't actually participate, but still watch football.

I remember a television interview a few years back on something like Close Up or Campbell Live. It had Wynton Rufer and the Sports Minister or suchlike, plus someone else I can't remember.

The presenter put a question that asked why, given football was NZ's biggest participation sport (didn't specify ages, so presumably included juniors), was it only 12th on the list of government funded sports.

I was very disappointed that they let the minister not answer the question.

I'm not arguing with the fact a lot of people PLAY football in this country, but that doesn't mean they support it and watch it.

Based on your theory, Phoenix and All Whites games would regularly sell out, and A-League matches would be some of the highest rating programmes on Sky. The fact is, they don't.

I would suggest there's a lot of people in New Zealand who couldn't tell you the names of more than 2 or 3 teams playing in the A-League. That's unlikely to change until the Phoenix start winning REGULARLY, and they receive more mainstream media coverage.

The battle continues ...

Listing numbers of players means nothing in terms of coverage. You have to understand that people on the pitch doesn't mean people watching on TV. Sky, TV 3 and TVNZ aswell as all the other media organisations have done research on what there target market wants to here about and sadly people care about Rugby, League and Cricket a lot more than football.

Ultimately people care more about sports that there good at. And thats not just in NZ - Thats around the world.

Do you think Canada gets lots of Rugby coverage? No. Because there not great at it. Where as they get swamped with Ice Hockey because they are the best in the world.

I don't think the issue is whether or not player numbers translate in to football supporters and viewers - I'd suggest they do.

The issue is that the "domestic" product (A-league and below) is generally seen as inferior to the imported product (e.g. Premiership) so support is focused on the likes of Spurs, Arsenal, Man U, Chelsea etc and viewership on the Premiership, European Cup, etc.

With the continual improvement in standard, a few big names, and the Nix delivering consistent results more of that support will move to the domestic product.

Because actually being able to enjoy Summer without wanting to hit yourself with blunt instruments would be entirely inappropriate!

A-League matches aren't even on Sky to achieve ANY ratings though. 4 days later doesn't count either...How can people know the names of teams when they are never on TV unless they are playing Phoenix?

I think it's unfair to say Phoenix games would regularly sell out based on numbers of players in the WHOLE of New Zealand - it's pretty rare for Rugby matches to sell out here, and that includes the All Blacks. Cricket doesn't sell out? Netball?? Does anyone go watch Netball?

Also, it's unlikely that many people would travel TOO far to come and see the Phoenix, and that's fair enough.

There were 10,000 there the other week, and considering there were only 15,000 at the Wellington v Auckland game Ranfurly Shield match, I'd say the minority is not as minor as people seem to think.

edit - and another thing, what is this obsession with only supporting teams who are constantly winning? By and large, that is not how football works, unless you are a glory hunter.

If NZFootball, The All Whites, the NZFC, and the Wellington Phoenix
could work together, with several major sponsors,
engage in a significant way with the NZ adult player base of 227,000 and the connected junior player base via family, friends, clubs schools etc.
there is potential for a huge shift in viewer numbers, plus potentiallly more demand for local coverage and more sponsors getting on board.
 Some Keys for success-
 *NZ qualifies for World Cup*
* Wellington Phoenix qualifies top 6 and pushes for finals*
*NZF Review of NZFC results in a format that is exciting, attractive for franchises, fans and viewers and potential sponsors alike.*

The opportunity to have an input is here now. The NZF Review Roadshow is in Wellington, at Petone's Memorial Park clubrooms on Tuesday 8th September.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Welcome to New Zealand Stev-O.

Yes, I had noticed a Kiwi penchant for this sort of thing.

My (Kiwi) girlfriend reinforces it regularly.

"Yeah my dad used to have a season ticket for the Blues when they were good, but now they're rubbish so he doesn't go".

I also have regular questions about why I keep supporting Hibs (to be fair, I have asked myself that!) if they are "always losing"!

Have to continually explain that's just the way it is!! Support a team, win or lose!
